Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

The smell of McDonald’s is enough to turn my stomach. Had a couple of beers tonight(400 cals) and seriously doubt they were worth it. Came in around 1600. Going to fast until lunch tomorrow .

Lilice · 02/04/2021 22:23

@Benjispruce2 you should try the alcohol free beers. They taste the same and only 40 calories per bottle ( becks blue)..I haven't drank alcoholic beer since 2019 and don't think I ever will again.

Lilice · 02/04/2021 22:26

I love a meze too. Mediterranean food is my fave (and sushis, I love sushis).
We never have take aways though, apart from the odd Macdonald's 😊 but now I have a salad instead of chips.

Benjispruce2 · 03/04/2021 07:57

I do like Becks Blue @Lilice but only if I’m driving etc. If there’s no alcohol I’d rather have tea!Grin

MazDazzle · 03/04/2021 09:04

It’s another glorious day here, although I’ve heard snow is on the way!

I’m fasting today after I abandoned yesterday’s FD in favour of cake!

I’m planning on having asparagus wrapped in Parma ham with poached eggs for dinner.

Anyone planning on fasting over the weekend or are you all waiting until Monday?

Hope you all enjoy your weekend regardless!

ListeningQuietly · 03/04/2021 11:08

If I'm not drinking I have water or squash.

We have a weekly takeaway / delivery
Greek, Lebanese, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese
always meals that are much too much of a faff to prepare at home.

My home made burgers are better than any from a restaurant so I'd never have one as a takeaway

Grey and much colder here today
and that WIND
yeuch

I had half an Easter egg last night and can't say I really enjoyed it that much. Before fasting, I would wolf down bags of giant buttons and all sorts of chocolate. Looking at my array of eggs and other chocolate, I;ll still be eating in my summer holidays!

Lilice · 04/04/2021 14:09

Happy easter. My husband got me a kinder egg 🤣 a giant one that is 😬

MazDazzle · 04/04/2021 15:28

So much chocolate nowadays tastes fake and plasticky. I do love kinder chocolate though! A giant egg sounds heavenly!

Yesterday was a great FD. Managed to come in under 500 cals and dragged the kids out for a walk.

I planned on easing off the brakes today, but the kids have tested me to my limit. My DH has been away for 2 weeks now and we’re a week into the holidays. So sick loading and unloading the dishwasher, doing the laundry, tidying the kitchen and nagging the children. Spent most of the day tidying up (I tidy best when in a rage!).

Finally got peace to do my workout this afternoon. Still haven’t eaten yet, so I might as well make this a b2b and give Monday’s FD a miss.

Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 18:30

Hi everyone. Just did a quick tally on mfp. I’m on just over 1500. Skipped bread and lunch and enjoyed a lovely salmon with roasties and lemon cake for dessert plus too several glasses of champagne. Happy Easter! Kitchen closed.

Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 18:30

Breakfast not bread.

KobaniDaughters · 04/04/2021 18:38

Oh god I have had a week of just ignoring everything (and drinking for the first time in 3 months though not since Tuesday), I have surgery booked a week on Tuesday and terrified of piling on the weight while I’m not able to move much so doing 3 FD this week: Mon, Weds, Fri

Lilice · 04/04/2021 20:44

I love your determination ladies 👏 I only had one FD this week which was on Monday, seems like ages away now. I kinda did the 16 8 instead the rest of the week. @MazDazzle you made me laugh when you said you tidy best in a rage 🤣 but I know what you mean. Cant be easy to deal with everything on your own. My husband works from home and the house still ends up in a big mess despite his help.
@KobaniDaughters I hope your surgery goes well

Lilice · 04/04/2021 20:45

That kinder egg is evil by the way. I said I wouldn't eat chocolate but I cant resist a kinder egg

MazDazzle · 05/04/2021 07:24

Good luck with your surgery Kobani, and your FDs.

I bought some chocolates for the kids to do a Easter hunt in the garden. I picked up a pack of mini kinder bars, then put them straight back. I can’t be trusted with them!

I’ve lost 1.5lb this past week, despite Easter, being off work and my youngest having their birthday! Also, it’s my 8th dry day in a row - maybe that’s why I’m so grumpy.

Good luck to everyone fasting today!

Benjispruce2 · 05/04/2021 07:42

Oh well done @MazDazzle that’s fabulous

SparklingXmas · 05/04/2021 08:05

First week in and lost 2kg! Super happy, I know it will reduce to 1-2lbs per week 🤞 from now on if I stick to it. Another 6.5kg to go. Happy Easter everyone 🤩🤩😊

ListeningQuietly · 05/04/2021 12:51

Happy Easter everybody.
Wasn't the weather yesterday glorious.
We had our main meal in garden in the sunshine.

Easter Egg hunt for my kids (20 and 22) was a laugh.
I hid 30 Lidl solid chocolate eggs in the morning. By the time we came to look for them, even with all 4 of us searching, we only found 29 !!

Good luck with your surgery Kobani - while you cannot exercise, concentrate on postural calories (never sitting back in chairs etc)

Well done Sparkling it will slow down but that is a great start

Hello what a lovely sunny weekend we have had, bit chilly today with some snow showers but still bright. I am off work but still decided to fast this week so it’s hard to get out of the treat because I’m on holiday mentality.
So far one crumpet eaten and it’s chilli for later.
We just popped into a local fancy food centre and bought some gorgeous looking marmalade so I am holding onto that image for tomorrow.

Benjispruce2 · 05/04/2021 15:13

Was going to fast today but a family walk ended up being 11k /17000+ steps so had to refuel. Will keep it a mini though and see how I feel tomorrow. Good luck Monday fasters.

KobaniDaughters · 05/04/2021 15:30

Morning everyone and thanks for the good wishes, am a little nervous about it but looking forward to not having hip pain anymore and hopefully reducing change of needing replacement surgery when I’m old(er)

FD today, inputted my calories last night so I know exactly what to eat. I seemed to have success recently having one big meal around 4pm so going to see if I can make it to that, if not I still have 100-150cala to spare for high protein lunchtime snack

KobaniDaughters · 05/04/2021 15:31

Meant to also say congrats on losses @MazDazzle and @SparklingXmas and so nice to wake Up to so much positivity this morning!

SparklingXmas · 05/04/2021 17:54

Thanks @KobaniDaughters and @ListeningQuietly
Stuffed myself today through - celebrating! so back on it tomorrow and fingers cross for a result next Monday xxx

Still need to eat water chocolate but resisting at the moment- delayed gratification hopefully 🤣🤣🤣

SparklingXmas · 05/04/2021 19:00

Easter! Not water 🙈

Lilice · 06/04/2021 00:05

Well done @MazDazzle and @SparklingXmas 👏

@ListeningQuietly did you find the 30th egg in the end? 🤣
