Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

How are you feeling today MarmaladeTeepee? Are you psyched up for your fast?

Good morning!

I'm attempting a 24 hour fast today! So, all going well, my Dinner at 7pm. I am going to take soup to work with me just in case (rather than have to hunt anything from the shops). Have a lovely day all!

StuntNun · 12/02/2021 07:58

Good luck ZiggZagg I would like to do a 24-hour fast today too but I'll see how I go as I've been extra hungry lately. I'm technically doing a bulk with my workouts so I don't want to restrict my food intake too much. However I have butter chicken curry planned for dinner and DH bought a whole kilogram of chicken breasts between the two of us so there will be plenty to eat then if I'm starving after a 24-hour fast. That would also mean I get my workout in while faster which works well for me on day 1 of a fast day 2 and day 3 are an entirely different matter.

Joining ZigZag and StuntNun in a 24 hour fast. Dinner last night was at 8.30 so will wait until 8.30 this evening before eating. I'm trying to go with the 16.8 followed by a 24 hour.

Good luck with your longer fast Marmalade 🙂.

catwithflowers · 12/02/2021 08:22

ZiggZagg, apologies 🙈😂

Oneborneverydecade · 12/02/2021 09:26

"I've worked them out to be 268 calories, if you make 5 from the quantity, or 223 if you make 6"

Does explain why I gained the day I ate three though. Won't make that mistake again

Oneborneverydecade · 12/02/2021 09:28

@MarmaladeTeepee good luck

I'll try for 23 hours I think. Ate at 6.30pm yesterday. If I get impatient with 2yo DD I'll have to eat though

PeacheyPeach · 12/02/2021 11:17

Hi all can I ask what does a 24hr fast achieve, does it speed up weight loss, I can't help thinking that I would be really hungry and eat more to compensate after the 24hrs which defeats the object!

StuntNun · 12/02/2021 11:37

Peachey for me the biggest advantage of a 24-hour fast is that it improves my insulin sensitivity so I feel less hungry in subsequent days. So it isn't simply the calorie restriction of missing a meal, it's eating less over several days as a result. In terms of weight loss or maintaining weight loss, even if you do tend to overeat at your next meal you'll be unlikely to be able eat two meals worth of calories at a single meal

Thanks everyone. Feeling ok so far, just drinking all the water. Good luck to everyone doing a 23/24 hour fast 🍀

MarmaladeTeepee · 12/02/2021 13:17

@PeacheyPeach you'll also start to see benefits of autophagy if you fast for 24 hours, basically giving your body time to heal and repair itself, as well as use up excess glycogen stores. You think you'll be starving afterwards but like StuntNun says you'll probably find you won't eat much more than normal.

Oneborneverydecade · 12/02/2021 16:38

I'm 22 hours in and feel surprisingly fine. It became apparent this morning that my irritability this week was totm not if related, which has given me confidence

oscarandelliesdad · 12/02/2021 16:38

Just checking in, afternoon everyone! Did one 24 hour fast this week no bother but broke it an hour early today at 23 hours for some leftover tuna mayo in a salad leaf. I am loving the hunger reduction and energy I have. Trying to gear up for 36 hours next week... Going to choose a day when I'm busy in school anyway and might take myself out of the room when the dc eat. Are there far bigger benefits to 36 over 24 hours, knowledgeable folk?

MarmaladeTeepee · 12/02/2021 16:45

I think it's just an autophagy thing oscar, the longer you fast the more your body can get rid of any dead cells and use up excess fat stores so boosts weight loss. But that's just my understanding, there's probably a lot more to it than that!

StuntNun · 12/02/2021 16:53

oscarandelliesdad I'm planning an extended fast starting after dinner on Monday if you, or anyone else, would like to join me.

22 hours and 38 mins- were having a takeaway tonight, really posh kebab shop that we have been wanting to try! I don't feel hungry but I feel weak iyswim?

PeacheyPeach · 12/02/2021 17:43

@stuntnun @marmaladeteepee thank you for your replies xx it sounds like a great idea especially if it can give the body a boost. Do you have any milk in drinks in the 24 hrs or is it black coffee and water for the duration x

MarmaladeTeepee · 12/02/2021 18:00

I don't really drink hot drinks so I just do water. Obviously too much milk will stop the benefit of fasting as your body will use the milk for fuel rather than your existing stores but this is what Dr Jason Fung (screenshotted as couldn't do a link to the specific info)

StuntNun · 12/02/2021 18:02

PeacheyPeach as a rule of thumb you can have up to 50 calories during your fast so a cup of tea or coffee is okay.

Well done ZiggZagg! That kebab's going to taste amazing!

PeacheyPeach · 12/02/2021 18:07

@marmaladeteepee wow thank you for posting this. It's crazy yesterday i wasn't hungry and probably could have gone until my evening meal bit I made myself eat something as I "thought I'd be hungry!" I'm seriously thinking I could do a 24hr one day a week. Especially if I could have a coffee to break up my day a bit x

MarmaladeTeepee · 12/02/2021 18:18

I'm sure you could peachey I think for so long we've been taught skipping meals is wrong and we're all going to go into starvation mode etc. When in actual fact fasting has been around for centuries and we're only now really understanding the health benefits of it.

PMcGintysGoat · 12/02/2021 19:43

I'm in for an extended fast if you'll have me stuntnun, hoping to do a 48 hr fast from Monday night to Wednesday night.

Oneborneverydecade · 12/02/2021 19:52

I'm in @StuntNun I think I'll aim for 36 hours. I may start Sunday evening though.

Broke my fast with celeriac and bacon soup, 1sl low carb bread, sprouts braised in butter and a piece of 84% chocolate

ZiggZagg · 12/02/2021 20:23

Kebab was amazing 🤩

Obviously no bread, just meat, salad and sauce!

Stuntnun I'm up for an extended fast! Will try Monday after dinner! I'm quite busy Tuesday so hoping that will make time go faster.
