Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

I slept fine - but then I almost never have a problem sleeping Grin

CrabPuff · 24/02/2021 09:18

I’ve slept really well after fasts - I think probably based on the desperation wake up the other side and get stuck into some coffee with milk!

Yesterday’s NFD was lovely. Those SLC rolls make all the difference to not feeling restricted. My homemade burger was so good and juicy!

FD again today. Planning 500 calories later but hoping I don’t need them really. I will do the same as last time and plan for a long bath and take my book to bed at 8.30 if needs be. If my teeth are brushed and I’m upstairs, nothing in the fridge can get me!

StuntNun · 24/02/2021 09:34

Sleep is usually only affected when you get into five days or more of fasting. Some people find they're buzzing and they don't sleep for as long. However that does sound like a side effect of ketosis to me so if you're already fat adapted there might not be such a big effect.

The worst thing for me when I fast is feeling cold. Although I'm hoping that might actually be an advantage when the weather gets hot.

I just googled how to pronounce autophagy because it's such a clunky word I thought I must be getting it wrong - no it's just clunky.

I think that understanding the benefits (beyond weightloss) will motivate me, both to wait it out each day and to keep going when the scales don't move. From what I understand I'm going to age backwards? Wink

Has anyone looked at Dr Cole's new intuitive fasting book?

Oneborneverydecade · 24/02/2021 15:00

@CrabPuff I was about to ask what FD and NFD mean, then my brain clicked into gear

StuntNun · 24/02/2021 15:37

Oneborn the effects on skin especially wrinkles and scarring seem remarkable. When I started extended fasting I swear I could feel my cellulite healing. It's practically gone now.

That's reassuring about sleep. I do get very cold when fasting so will layer up tomorrow. I am nervous but will make sure I have something sensible to hand in case I cave!

Planning tea with almond milk first thing tomorrow. Stock drink at lunch and a bulletproof coffee.

4ish cuppa with almond milk/stock depending on how I feel.

Next morning coffee with tap of cream to get me to lunch.

How does that sound? I didn't feel particularly hungry at lunch today but had dry mouth and headache who h I assume is electrolytes? I did have lemon and salt in water first thing but think I need to keep that up more.

Oneborneverydecade · 24/02/2021 20:32

@Bestbees I wonder if you're overthinking it? I don't think I would plan bulletproof coffee or stock but just see how I felt

Bestbees · 24/02/2021 20:38

@Oneborneverydecade almost certainly! It's what I am like, but will then go with the flow when I get to it!

I got home from.work today and just felt rough. Not rumbly tummy but knew I needed fuel. Had nuts, ham, some pate and olives. Then have had a dinner of meat balls in butter tomato sauce, cauli rice, salad and the Greek yog. Feel much better. Does anyone else get like this post fast? Worried it will undo the weight loss benefits. Will aim instead for a 24 hour fast tomorrow, with the aim of getting used to it for a few weeks, then might go longer. Worried I will get too bingey as I am inclined that way.

Oneborneverydecade · 24/02/2021 20:47

It's interesting because @StuntNun says that longer fasts help her feel less hungry, but I've found the opposite. I don't know if it's psychological or not but I feel like my body is trying to catch up.
Obviously @stunt's fasts are super long and I'm only 2 weeks into longer fasts so maybe that.
Your dinner sounds delicious btw

Bestbees · 24/02/2021 20:54

Its was delicious!

I think it's definitely my body catching up! It's like I wasn't noticeable hungry at lunch and it was a bit like my body had switched off the hunger signals, then when I ate it was back on again! Pleased I stuck with low carb options though. Perhaps making sure I keep up electrolytes will lower that. Also had terrible taste in my mouth.

CrabPuff · 24/02/2021 22:17

I managed 23 hours but had a Diet Coke as the hunger was strong today so not a “clean” fast as it were. Pork chop and veg this evening came in at 502 and early night as planned.

Looking forward to a solid but late breakfast tomorrow!

On the hunger thing - I think that the science (inasmuch as there is enough research which there isn’t masses and masses) suggests that the more you fast, the lower the production of ghrelin which is the “hunger hormone”. So the less of that you have, the lower your appetite. And ghrelin is triggered by high GI foods like carbs. So fasting as well as eating protein and fat and fibre is the way to reduce ghrelin and thus appetite.

It makes sense to me. Mind you a lot of my “hunger” is emotional so it’s a good thing in lots of ways for me to fast.

AprilThe8th · 25/02/2021 08:05

I'm struggling to sleep.Ive only been doing it 4 days will it improve?

Bestbees · 25/02/2021 10:47

Well done @CrabPuff. Interesting about hunger. I wasn't really hungry yesterday in what I would consider a normal way, rather that my whole body was saying it needed fuel!

@AprilThe8th what have you been doing for 4 days? Fasting totally?

As I said before I am just going to stick with a few 24ish hour fasts, going dinner to dinner, to get used to it. I want to jump in to the extremes, but think after how I felt/ate yesterday I should allow my body to get used to it. Am a bit hungry already today, but have an electrolyte thing to try. Will have stock drink at lunch time whilst kids eat and then hopefully that will help.

AprilThe8th · 25/02/2021 10:52

@Bestbees 16:8 low carb 1200 calories

Oneborneverydecade · 25/02/2021 12:23

Are you new to low carb? @AprilThe8th if yes are you noticing any other side effects? I didn't notice 16:8 affected my sleep but I didn't start IF until some time after reducing carbs

AprilThe8th · 25/02/2021 14:34

@Oneborneverydecade yes I only started low carb on Monday

Oneborneverydecade · 25/02/2021 15:18

It's not specifically mentioned here but I believe trouble sleeping can be a symptom of keto or low carb flu. This article has some useful advice on how to avoid it

Can I join you all? I've been doing 16:8/18:6 for a year on and off. I want to try an extended fast this weekend. I'm having an OMAD lunch tomorrow then just going to see how far I get!

StuntNun · 25/02/2021 20:59

Is anyone fasting today or planning to fast over the weekend? I'm on 16:8 today and planning an extended fast from Monday dinner.

I'm going to 16:8 today and then extended fast from Sunday dinner time Grin

Bestbees · 26/02/2021 07:39

@StuntNun 16:8 for me today. Thinking of a 24hour over the weekend too. Not sure I would in normal times but in lock down it's a bit easier!

InsanityRocks · 26/02/2021 09:07

Enjoying this thread. I've been doing 22-23 hour fast on weekdays and eating three meals a day weekends for the last few weeks, and this week I have felt so strong and good. I absolutely love not having to think about what to eat, so much time saved and then the reward of eating whatever I want. I eat very healthily but always had problems with portion control. I feel like this is the perfect way of life for me.
