BSD and Fast800 support thread #17

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2020 10:51

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Well done @Colourmylife1 and @PhoenixMama !

So I inexplicably lost loads of weight in week 5 - four pounds in total which was unexpected. I’m fully anticipating bouncing back up a little in week 6 or staying the same so have been very focused and on track the past couple of days. However, I was all planned out food-wise today and then had lunch out sprung upon me. It was at a farm cafe and everything on the menu was bread/pastry/carbs everywhere. I panicked and went for a blue cheese pearl barley risotto which feels like the antithesis of BSD friendly! At least I didn’t have any cake... But what do you do in terms of tracking and recording food when you eat out and there is no nutritional info available? I honestly have no idea how many calories or carbs I ate - have looked online for the closest recipe I could find and used that to guess but it’s very much a wild estimate!

DottyDetective · 06/02/2020 14:15

Today I’m really hungry! Drinking lots of water and trying to push through. Working until 6 so won’t get home until 645, then by the time kids are in bed it’s 730 so will be a late dinner. Just need to push through until then!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/02/2020 14:36

@CaptainBrickbeard to be honest, that's what I'd do- a generous estimate as a guide, but realistically you can't know for certain.

(Blue cheese risotto sounds bloomin' lovely though....!)

Beautiful sunny day here. About to go for my couch to 5k run (shuffle), I am enjoying it so far.

Had an early lunch which has made me hungry, egg salad with sauerkraut, they do not go well together. Dinner is 350 gr fish, roast peppers and asparagus, might roast some cauliflower too. Saturday is my weigh day.

One thing I am determined about is when I lose this weight I am not going to let it creep up again. It’s so bloomin hard to lose it and so so easy to gain.

DottyDetective · 06/02/2020 20:32

I white knuckled it until I got home where I inhaled a boiled egg followed by an enormous celeriac, kale and ham (and more egg and cheese). Closed at about 850 kcals. Was down by 2kg on scales today so fingers crossed it stays down!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/02/2020 21:51

I did well today until the final hurdle where I ate a kinder bueno! It wasn't worth it one bit. I had chicken soup for lunch and a snack of cheese at 4pm, then after work my dinner was cod loin wrapped in bacon and Mediterranean veg, with avocado. It was very nice. I even managed to avoid wine at Asda when I popped in after work....but then ended up having choc! I did do 22k steps (8.5k was a run) so it shouldn't cause too much damage but I'm annoyed with myself. My 3 working days are so full on and I seem to crash out after Wednesday and Thursday goes horribly wrong...

Tomorrow: I'm going to fast til lunch. I've not weighed myself all week so I will do that before the weekend, although I haven't been as strict this week and I think I'll have maintained.
My lunch tomorrow will be salad with either ham or egg, and dinner will be chicken tikka (my Ds is going to cook for us all, he's very excited!) no run tomorrow but maybe yoga.

After a crappy week 3rd week, when I ate practically nothing and gained half a lb, I've managed a bit of a spurt midway through week 4 and lost 3.5lbs in 3 days.
I'm hoping to reach the 14lb off by end of week 4 - only 1lb to go to make that milestone and to finally, after about 5 years, say hello to a number that starts with 11Smile

Had a banana for brekkie as was at a meeting and too antisocial to crack open the smelly boiled eggs I'd packed. Then delicious coq au vin (pinch of nom light) with cauliflower for lunch and bolognese with added handful of red lentils in it for dinner. Closing up at 712kcals today but definitely a lot of guesswork in that number.

Struggling with milk and cream cravings past few days though. Any idea why that might be??

Kimlek · 06/02/2020 22:38

captain all you can do is guesstimate the risotto but at least it was pearl barley rather than arborio rice.
riddle neither egg salad nor sauerkraut sound particularly delicious but together?!!
Well done pushing through dotty! I always feel snacky at around 4pm.
My weight was static this am. I had a good brisk hour dog walk today in the lovely sunshine that was apparently 7km according to my friend. Bit of weird eating as trying to use items in the fridge and cook. Lunch was a couple of mouthfuls of spicy lentils that I was cooking for the stuffed peppers for dinner (my lot love them) and a portion of goats cheese crustless quiche that I thought I’d make for the weekend when my lot have pizzas. I was snacky at 4pm so had some hazlenuts but craving something sweet so had a few raisins. I then wasn’t hungry at 6/7pm for the stuffed peppers...but the kids had 3 halves instead. Closing on 616cals but carbs 48 mostly due to lentils and protein a bit low. I do find it tricky to get enough protein without carbs going high.... more of the goats cheese quiche tomorrow I think!

Kimlek · 06/02/2020 22:40

hellsbells 14lbs in 4 weeks!!! That certainly is hellsbells!!! Well done you!

FluffyEarMuffs · 06/02/2020 23:08

Evening.

I had a visitor at work today so I had to eat in the canteen - ended up with a mixed salad of sorts with two halves of a boiled egg.

I ran around like a crazy thing all day. Didn't even have chance to drink the cups of mint tea made for me until each of the four cups had gone cold 😁

Ate a small snack pack of nuts. I wanted to eat properly for dinner, but didn't even have chance to make a shake.

Still awake as I had to walk the dog when I got in (late!).

And now setting the alarm for 6am for my early morning boot camp 😩

Kimlek · 07/02/2020 07:00

Geez fluffy boot camp after such a manic day & a late night!
I was faffing online til midnight and then woke at 520!! Grrrr!!!
I’m 11.2 this morning!!!! So very very excited to be getting closer to a 10 start!!!
Will fast til lunch as per usual, do a brisk hour dog walk and have crustless quiche with salad for lunch. I’ll make a cottage pie with cauli mash & veg for dinner tonight. I do need to think how I cope with these 4pm sweet cravings though.

Colourmylife1 · 07/02/2020 07:08

So day 5 and down 4lbs on the week. I can hardly believe it. I never lose weight this quickly. I think maybe my weigh- in on Monday was showing a bit high. I was surprised by it, especially as it followed a work trip to a hot country where I ate little and also had 3 days of food poisoning. I’m now back at my pre-Christmas weight. I think I will start adding a 100 cals a day and see what happens. I always find maintenance very hard but this time I am determined. I’m nearly 57 and too old to lose this weight again!
Wishing everyone a good day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2020 07:14

I'm 10.9.8 this morning, so I am actually up 1.5lbs but I sort of expected it after having choc yesterday and also after having run 3 days in a row. I actually feel quite stiff and bloated, and may well have found if I'd weighed later it would have subsided a bit. I did not sleep well
Last night; struggled to get to sleep and then was woken by Ds and struggled again to get back. So not a great start to the weekend! Should be an ok day though, lots of jobs to do and meals all planned. Dh will probably drink tonight but I don't really feel like it so I might not.

OP posts:
CaptainBrickbeard · 07/02/2020 07:15

Kimlek someone on here recommended liquorice and peppermint tea for sweet cravings and it has really worked for me! I also have vanilla chai herbal tea and the yogi choco teabags as well. They are all zero calorie, help keep up the water intake and do help me with a little hit of sweetness when I really need it.

I have dropped another pound this morning which I wasn’t expecting. This week the scales have dropped a pound every morning. I know it’s not fat; must be water I guess? It’s gratifying to see lower numbers but I don’t really trust it coming down at this speed!

PhoenixMama · 07/02/2020 07:18

Hi all - well done Hells! Great numbers!

Colour I wouldn't add 100 cals on week 2, do two solid weeks on 800 and then decide. It takes 2 weeks for the body to properly adjust otherwise you'll just yoyo up and down. Have you thought about doing 5:2 or 2:5 for maintenance?

I'm stuck at 12.9 AGAIN. I am desperately trying to get to 12 but my body is not helping, no matter what I do. I'm so frustrated. I'm going to think about it over the weekend but I might need to drop my carbs really really low for a couple of weeks. I don't know what else to do. My body seems to hit this weight and then refuses to budge but I really really want to hit 12stone - for my health as well as vanity!

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/02/2020 07:23

Phoenix I read a Jillian Michaels article about stalling and she recommends surprising your body in some way - like switch to a different kind of exercise eg from swimming to HIIT or something. It was all about how your body adapts to a routine and if you can keep it on its toes then it can help with stalls and get things moving again?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2020 07:41

@CaptainBrickbeard I don't think it will be just water; and anyway, the water is weight and mass so it still needs to go. Well done!

@PhoenixMama I'm a bit the same, it's frustrating! It feels like every time I lose i then have a few days where I just return to where I was again! I'm with you for a very low carb week next week. I think I am being drawn to carbs because I'm tired/stressed/frazzled by work so I'm probably having more than I think I am as well.

FantasticButtocks · 07/02/2020 08:17

Which is worse, a sausage roll or two squares of 85% chocolate? 😁 I'm meeting someone for dog walk and coffee at a place that does divine sausage rolls... I don't like coffee without something to eat so usually have a couple of squares of dark chocolate with it. Meeting at lunch time and will be first food of the day.

Now I've lost the weight, I really am keen to not gain it back. Also don't yet know if my pre-diabetes has gone yet. (Have lost 3 stone though so I bloody hope so!)

Kimlek · 07/02/2020 08:19

Thanks captain I’ll definitely give those a try!

Colourmylife1 · 07/02/2020 08:37

@PhoenixMama The reason I was thinking about adding calories was last time I did so I carried on losing weight and actually ended up losing a bit too much and looking gaunt. But I will give it a go - definitely want to avoid the dreaded yo yo!
I was maintaining quite well on 6:1 but I was pretty strict about not eating above my TDEE in the other days. Then Christmas came along!

Kimlek · 07/02/2020 10:16

I think sausage rolls would be the worst!!

Kimlek · 07/02/2020 10:19

fantasticbuttocks not too much sugar in 85% choc and BSD friendly-ish. Sausage rolls have the issue of pastry (carbs) and sausages will have ‘filler’ carbs rather than 100% meat/protein.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2020 10:30

I agree sausage rolls would be worse, but I'd still have the sausage roll because in my world there is no such thing as 2 squares of chocolate (and would lead to biscuits, choc and other delicious terrible carbs)

FluffyEarMuffs · 07/02/2020 11:20

Morning all!

Yup @Kimlek i know, arghhh... and then I woke it a rush at 6:10 and just made it 😆 But I do feel better for going.

I have half a lb down this morning, but I am bouncing up and down too still. I am wondering what to add to my fitness routine to shake things up a bit as clearly somewhat my body adapted really stupidly fast to early morning boot camps 😩

I am making a creamy chicken breast and spinach slow cooker dinner for this evening, which will definitely bring my calories to 800 today if I have a snack lunch of cheese, apple and some almond nut butter when I pop home.

I want to resist the wine this evening; it's all too easy to have a glass once it gets to the weekend, and it's never just one glass 😁
