BSD and Fast800 support thread #17

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2020 10:51

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Well done Macca!

Another one with period, no point in weighing. Have had a pretty good week, had some bread just before my period but that happens me every month, my body needs what it needs. Should settle down now. Haven’t eaten yet today, probably have smoked mackerel, spinach and tomato salad this evening.

PhoenixMama · 01/02/2020 14:29

I came on this morning and feel rotten. Fasted till noon but not weighing till next week.

Bear 6lbs in a week is amazing!

MMC20 · 01/02/2020 21:53

Well done everyone with the pounds off. Some amazing drops in there. I'm doing nearer 900 cals a day if I'm honest with myself. No way I'll drop any more than a couple of pounds a week tops. Might need to cut out the 4 cups of tea or coffee before I have of course with milk and sugar. Love the motivating effect of this group though!

Kimlek · 02/02/2020 00:48

MMC20 this group is fab isn’t it?!
macca 5 stones!!!! Yeah... so pleased!
And bear 6lb in one week is incredible esp when you’re fairly light. Impressive efforts obviously.
Just returned from a lovely evening out. We started with a gin cocktail and as I was driving I then drank elderflower spritz that was quite sweet so no doubt not very BSD. The chilli was amazing (no rice), came with avocado & sour cream. Starters were little pastry things like Mexican samosas which were definitely not BSD! Followed by quite a large portion of chocolate tart with raspberries! Pleased I chose to drive rather than getting a cab as it could have been a lot worse. Let’s see what damage the scales say in the morning.

DottyDetective · 02/02/2020 01:31

Can I join?

Gained lots of weight over a few stressful years- death in family, job dramas, 3 miscarriages then a baby who didn’t sleep for over a year... Just stopped breastfeeding and have 30-35kg to lose. Eek. Aiming for 8weeks BSD, 12 if I can do it. Have been doing 16:8 for past few weeks but I can eat an astonishing amount in 8 hours so not enough alone!

Maccalenny · 02/02/2020 05:40

Welcome Dottydetective. Well done for getting the 16:8 in place and good luck with the start of the food side of it!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/02/2020 05:58

Welcome @DottyDetective

I'm up stupidly early for a Sunday morning because our heating was left on and the combination of creaking radiator pipes and heat has woken me up.

Yesterday was an ok day- I did relax a bit but not stupidly so. Fasted all morning and then Had ham salad for lunch but did have a bread roll. Then Dh cooked dinner, so had lamb shank in red currant gravy, cauli cheese and asparagus (all pre made so prob not 100% BSD but still ok) but then did have 2 glasses of wine and a little scoop of ice cream. So no, not BSD really but actually ok for a 'day off'. I was also busy all day, decorating my hallway, and I did bootcamp.

Today again I want to fast til lunchtime. I'm convinced that's my biggest issue at the weekend: I eat breakfast and it sets me off on the wrong foot. Dh and I are going for a run and then we'll have a salad lunch and I have a chicken for dinner.,

If anyone has Netflix I recommend a documentary called 'the magic pill' which is about the health benefits of ketogenic diets and high fat/low carb diets. Very interesting !

Welcome DottyDetective! Sorry to hear you’ve had such a shifty time if things! If you’ve been reading the thread you’ll know it’s a lovely thread supportive thread & that a few people have lost incredible amounts of weight eating this way. Some 5 stones (similar to you) so it’s definitely achievable. Others have less to lose or are now maintaining but still not plain sailing. You’ll get lots of help & support. Big well done in taking these first steps.
I’m thrilled to have a static weight this morning after such a blow out evening!! Like bear I’m going to fast til lunch, walk the dog, have the BSD Vietnamese Pho for lunch (which DH and the kids love) and for dinner do the BSD duck pancakes. I’ll do a veg stir fry on the side for DH and the kids. I want to keep today very low as I’m sure last night’s extravagance will pay back otherwise.

Riddleofthesands · 02/02/2020 09:29

Weighed out of curiosity, gained 2 lbs, it’s probably my period, pretty sure I always gain at this point. Slept badly with period pain. Feel crap. Going to do W4R1 of couch to 5k, it’s v gusty here but I will give it a go. Might lift my spirits. Just eating one meal today, a late lunch of roast duck and lots of veg.

Kimlek · 02/02/2020 09:29

Currently watching ‘The Magic Pill’ bear fascinating stuff! Thank you!

MMC20 · 02/02/2020 09:33

Thanks Kimlek. Sounds like you survived the night out! Welcome dotty detective too. Looks like you've been through the mill but you've landed in a good place here Smile. Bear, interestingly I find breakfast can set me off on a bad eating track at the weekend too. Or sometimes a carby evening meal the night before has the same effect.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/02/2020 10:12

I thought it was really interesting @Kimlek , particularly because it shows all generations of the same family and how it's a 'magic pill' for all of them. It's made me more determined to be strict with my children's diets because while I am quite strict with my own, they do tend to eat more sugar, grains and cereal

I was surprised that the documentary was so anti legumes & beans etc. It’s probably a bit OTT but definitely makes you think. Poor professor Noakes!!!
m.youtube.com/watch?v=YbLsNawOwGo
Not sure if this link will work but this dietician discusses the documentary and, to me, very much supports MM’s BSD as opposed to purely Keto. Interesting stuff.

Kimlek · 02/02/2020 11:25

My kids eat most of what I do. Especially my 2 teens. My 10 year old less so. She’s crazy about pasta and there’s nothing to replace penne!! Hates courgettes but I’ll work on courgetti. Breakfasts are an issue for her too as it’s cereals (sugar free but still), pancakes with berries, pain au chocolate, bagels etc. She doesn’t rate the egg muffins but I will try again. Our microwave has broken and they’re not that great cold. She does tons of sports & is incredibly slight so needs good foods!!

PhoenixMama · 02/02/2020 11:56

Morning all! Welcome Dotty! Still not weighing as period is horrible right now and I'm super emotional so would probably cry at the results!

Big meal out with my bf last night, very delicious but not very bsd but I really enjoyed it so there's that!

Feeling tired & sorry for myself today but did manage to force myself to do 40 mins of yoga first thing. Going to chill out for the rest of the day now & get some admin done! Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

FluffyEarMuffs · 02/02/2020 12:29

Morning all!

Welcome @DottyDetective

I took on board the fact I was being way too OTT ( thanks @thenewaveragebear1983 😘 and have relaxed this weekend.

I want to get back to being stricter this week though. I am so disappointed I didn't lose anything in week 4.

Week 5 has my hopes up already 🙌🏻

I have ordered new leggings from Sweaty Betty. I tried some on in a shop first and was thrilled I am a size smaller than I'd have guessed. That perked me up a little. To anyone starting - do a TON of measurements; I wish I had. It would have made me feel a lot happier in weeks 3 and 4 when the scales haven't moved but I had something to show for it anyway.

And I also bought some new makeup to boost me a bit at work.

Dog walking and ironing this afternoon! Roast chicken thighs later for dinner. I have sourdough in the freezer and might toast a slice with some eggs and bacon now for lunch. Hey, while I am in a relaxed mood 😁

I might watch the Netflix thing today with DH. He has cut carbs since January 2 too. Glad I watched the YouTube thing about though, thanks @Kimlek , as I know what to warn him is "wrong" with it!

DottyDetective · 02/02/2020 13:05

How much fasting is everyone doing? I’m planning to do one meal a day if possible to make it easier. I struggle with keto diets generally but can cope with Mediterranean and I really want a good kick start to begin with as I’ve got a lot to lose.

Maccalenny · 02/02/2020 14:11

Dotty when I started I did 16:8, but ate quite often in the 8 hours, whilst sticking to 800. It stopped me feeling much hunger at all. I still find that if I eat a big meal, I want to keep eating....suddenly fancying pudding even though I’ve never been much of a pudding-eater. It definitely suits me to spread the 800 through my 8 hour eating window.

I prefer this to keto as I like pulses and root veg ( in moderation of course) and also on keto I ate too much and didn’t lose a lot. This lets me eat a wide enough range of food that I don’t feel restricted, but stops me guzzling endless coffees with cream!

Kimlek · 02/02/2020 14:55

You’re welcome fluffy - sweaty Betty what a lovely treat!
Ah pheonix hope your chill day has you feeling happier x
DottyDetective I tend to have one coffee first thing but other than that fast till lunch (1230/2), early dinner around 6pm and sometimes some nuts in between. I’m definitely not Keto as have pulses, legumes and some root veggies. Mediterranean is family friendly and relatively easy to follow when home or out. Like macca I would find one meal a day tricky but so much of this way of eating is a learning process and discovering what works best for you. Have you got some apps to help plot? MFP logs weight and measurements as well as food (free version) but Happy Scale is great for smoothing our any blips or plateaus!!

veryveryquietly · 02/02/2020 15:07

Hi all, rotten week, some close-to-800 days and several way-too-many-cals days. Ignoring it and trying again, and if I can just minimize stress eating, I'll be thrilled. Fist bumps and good vibes to all!

DottyDetective · 02/02/2020 16:38

Thanks everyone, I have Happy Scale and MFP. I know what needs to be done, I just need to do it! Support will be good. I’m moving house next week so probably a bad time to start but if it stops me eating everything in sight it’s good!

Pajamagirl · 02/02/2020 17:59

@thenewaveragebear1983
Very interesting documentary
Noticed how many of the people said they could think better or clearer .after only a few weeks . the little girl was an amazing example of the difference it made

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/02/2020 20:37

A fairly good day for me, despite my ridiculous early start. Went for a run with Dh and then did hold out for food until lunch. Then again til dinner. Decorated my hallway as well so lots of up and down ladders and generally being busy. Dinner was roast chicken and veg. I have had a wholemeal seeded roll with my lunch, and half a small jacket potato with my dinner, but as a result it does seem to have kept me away from the sugar I was actually craving (through tiredness I think)

Menu planned for the week, plenty of vegetarian protein sources this week and some fish too, but not really much meat. I have been having more dairy this last week and while I've enjoyed it, I do now have a mild flare up of rosacea all over my one cheek so this week will go back to alpro and just cut out the cheese subs entirely as they tend to look and taste of cheese but actually be made of starch and potato weird

Happy Monday everyone
O.8lb down today and happy scale says 2lb lost this week so v happy with that! Will walk the dog this morning albeit I’m going with friends who walk very slowly. I’ve a Pilates class this afternoon. But should really think about adding in more exercise. I fear I’ll have excess belly skin when I lose the weight. I’ll fast til lunch then have eggs, kale, mushrooms, tomatoes & seeds. Dinner will be the BSD ginger salmon with broccoli and peppers.
