For example if you were 1 of 10 kids, would you like to have 10 kids?

OP posts:
mumofoneAloneandwell · 27/03/2026 21:52

One of three

But the oldest, with no dad, whilst my step dad was the dad to the other two

Had one - am a single mum. One and done. A choice directly based on the above.

Seahorse1978 · 27/03/2026 21:53

I’m one of six. I have two. No way on earth would I have more. Six kids is chaos with zero attention. Love my siblings to bits though.

Usethoseballsofjellyinyourhead · 27/03/2026 21:54

I'm one of four, I have four kids.

TappyGilmore · 27/03/2026 21:54

Nope. I’m one of three. Never have an odd number!

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 27/03/2026 21:55

I’m an only child, and I have three.

MustBeCrazyMama · 27/03/2026 21:55

I'm one of 4 and I've had 4 myself. DH is one of 2.

Advocodo · 27/03/2026 21:56

1 of 8! No way did I ever want more than 2. I have 2.

Goneback2school · 27/03/2026 21:56

I'm one of 3, DH is one of 2. I wanted 3 children, he wanted 2. We both technically got what we wanted because I have 3 but DS1 is from a previous relationship.

1000StrawberryLollies · 27/03/2026 21:57

I'm one of two and I have 2 dc. I never considered choosing to have more or less than 2 tbh. The vast majority of people I know have 2.

mindfulmoaning · 27/03/2026 21:58

One of two, wanted four but had three

starrynight009 · 27/03/2026 21:59

I'm one of three. I have one.

Denim4ever · 27/03/2026 22:00

My parents were both from families of 9 children. Only one - a sibling of my father - had a large family, six children. DH is one of 4, we have one DC, 2 of his siblings have 2 DC and one has cats 🤣 a grown up stepson and a step grandchild she dotes on.

I think personal circumstances, financial constraints, fertility, career ambitions and a whole host of things determine how many kids one wants or ends up with. I don't think my mother enjoyed being part of a large family and it can be that being one of many makes you feel it's not what you want for your kids.

Summerunlover · 27/03/2026 22:28

I am an only. And unfortunately had fertility issues took me years to conceive and then another 10 years for a sibling. As I was determined not to have an only child. I really wanted a big family and would have more if I could. I hated being and only child.

Notexactlyasplanned · 27/03/2026 22:32

I’m one of four - I have two. I think many of us find what we grew up in feels ‘normal’, but in reflection, I wanted more time and energy to give to my kids than I remembered having especially as the eldest.

ExOptimist · 27/03/2026 22:40

I'm one of three and so was my husband. I knew after 2 that I did not want any more.
Interestingly my siblings both had 2 as well. None of us wanted 3.

TheHouse · 27/03/2026 22:41

Yeah I’m one of 3 and I had 3. Two felt too normal and boring.

Otherdimensions · 27/03/2026 22:43

I’m one of two
DH is one of two

We have three
I’d love a fourth but he’s still undecided

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 27/03/2026 22:44

I'm the oldest of 6. Absolutely bloody not. It was awful.
I've got one, and that's it.
Only two of my siblings have children and they have one each as well.

Emptinest · 27/03/2026 22:47

Not a chance. I have 11 full siblings. Not that I don't love them all but even as a child I knew it wasn't a great situation.
I stuck with 2.
Several of my siblings are child free by choice. I have 2. None has a large family.

Listlostlast · 27/03/2026 22:48

I’m one of five and I always said I wanted four (nice even number!) but my health and circumstances won’t allow, so I have two, little darlings. On reflection, I think it’s all the better, really. They get more attention individually than if there were hoards of them! Only one of my siblings has children so far and they’ve got four, funnily enough! Not sure if they’re finished or not 🤔

BlimeyO · 28/03/2026 06:26

Interesting thread, thanks OP.

I’m the middle one of three sisters, and there is no way ON EARTH I wanted to subject another person to being a middle child.

I have two children.

Interestingly, my sisters each have four children and could not understand my decision at all.

So in my case, position in birth order was also a factor in deciding the number of children.

spingforward76 · 28/03/2026 06:40

I'm one of 2, have 2, would have loved 4, but finances wouldn't allow it

Peonies12 · 28/03/2026 06:41

No, Im one of three, I’d never have 3. Got 1 toddler now and 99% sure we won’t have another.

Sgtmajormummy · 28/03/2026 07:15

I’m the last of 4 so probably got the best deal. I was semi feral but with plenty of affection. Strict parents had seen it all by the time I was a teenager. Left home at 17.
We have 2 DC and are happy to have stopped there.
Standards and cost have increased.

blondeascustard · 28/03/2026 07:25

One of two. I would have been happy with two (in fact, was reconciling myself to having only one because of secondary infertility), but love having three. So far it has balanced out the bickering dynamics I was part of growing up.
