Sudden period after 4 years with Mirena coil - anyone had this?

I've had a mirena coil for 4 years and it's been brilliant - no side effects, no periods (no babies!). I've had a bit of hormonal weirdness over the past month - dark patches appearing on my forehead, sore boobs and suddenly last night my period started with bad cramps.

Has this happened to anyone else? I've had a good Google but mainly just horror stories - it's difficult to find any proper info. I don't think it's moved or come out as I presume the period would be a lot heavier (they were fairly horrific pre coil).

Appreciate any thoughts if this has happened to anyone else.

Hi
I am the same am in my second coil this one been in for 2 years and had no periods to start over last 6 months had spotting brown discharge also after sex went to toilet and was bleeding looking at all the other comments looks like this is common but have got an appointment to see my gp as its getting me down having the spotting.
My last coil was great up until the last year and had spotting also.

I had light spotting 4 years after having my Mirena in. I had mine changed 9 months after it was supposed to because I lost the card they gave me when I had it fitted, but still didn't fall pregnant luckily. Apparently it's still effective against pregnancy for a good while after the 5 years. Mine had turned on its side so had to have it removed in hospital which was painful and annoying, but had a new one fitted straight away and no real periods. However, with this second one I still get light spotting, and more recently, pretty bad cramps for a few days before. Bad enough to take painkillers, which isn't something I do lightly. I guess it's just one of those things, it does it's real job of preventing pregnancy, stopping your period is just a good side effect I suppose!

I think I am on my 4th one now, I've had them so long!! I was referred for a hysterectomy at 32 following 2 c sections and horrible scar tissue but this coil literally was the best thing imaginable. I do find they last about 4 years with no bleeding at all, then i get random spotting leading onto more regular ovulation and periods although they are nothing like the awful flooding i used to get before. I know that when I need a proper sanitary towel and not just a liner that I need to get it changed. Incidentally, I just go in and get mine done when it needs it, they don't ever seem to question it or how long its been in. I think they last for 5 years maximum if you're lucky.

Hi all , newbie here
I'm experiencing similar stuff I've been on the coil 4 years I've had the odd spotting here and there, when ever I try and look for information it's always horror stories you come across.
My coil is amazing I've had no periods at all since I had it inserted, but now I'm starting to experience bad cramps and Ovulating , aswell as a off putting smell when due on aswell as headaches but other than that I would recommend the coil to others. My question is how do you keep track of ovulation if your not bleeding. Xmas Smile

I fell pregnant in the mirena coil. I had all the usual (for me) pregnancy symptoms (stuffy sinuses, metallic-y taste in my mouth) but it didn't twig that I might be pregnant, until I started bleeding. I did a test, and found I was. I had a couple of extra scans to make sure all was okay. Aside from a couple of sessions of bleeding in the early days, all was fine with the pregnancy. The mirena was embedded in the placenta when DS was born.

I was a big mirena fan, and in fact I had another one put in place after DS was born.

cushioncovers · 26/12/2016 12:07

My mirena coil 'ran out' after about 4 years and I started bleeding. Had a new one put in and it all stopped again.

Hi, ive had 3 maruna coils fitted, had this latest one in for 12 months. Never had a period in all the years I've had them fitted, so was worried when 3 weeks ago I had bleeding, it only lasted a day, then 2 weeks later another day of bleeding. Worried, made appointment to see my GP. She said shouldn't be having bleeding after 3rd maria and said it needed investigating. She game me internal examination, said all looked fine, said I could have a scan to see if marina in correct position. I have further bleeding another 3 days later, not sure what's going on. I'm 49, wondering if it's because I'm approaching the menopause? Anyone else has a similar experience?

Had mine removed after 6 yrs so I could have it replaced with another for hrt with patches. Came out easy but they couldn't get the replacement In. So I was put on duo hrt pill. And tablets to stop bleeding while I waited for new appointment. 6weeks later different doc said I'd be better on patches, stop tablets that are stopping bleeds and see how I feel. As at 51 I could be through the menapause. 10 days later I feel lousy. Heavy bleeding, cramps ,back ache, tearful. It's like 6 yrs ago again 😕😢 what to do?

Hi I had my coil put in back in February and eventually my periods stopped but then they started again in September til November and then stopped again? Is this normal? I didn't know I was pregnant with my first child so I get so paranoid about it

cushioncovers · 20/05/2018 15:42

This must be an old post as I seemed to have commented twice several months apart😂

Sherry1234 · 20/05/2018 18:12

Hiya did your periods change ?

Hildak · 11/06/2018 10:26

Hello, glamourbadger, what did the doc say. I have my merina for about 4 years now, and this last 5 months i started spotting. This month is'full blown period.

Cazza69 · 21/06/2018 11:14

Ive had a mirena in for over 2 years. Took a good 9 months to settle and bleeding more or less stopped only very very light. My migraines have improved too but my.mood swings got horrendous since on it. I take Menopace for this and they have improved immensely however for a week now have been bleeding albeit not ad heavy as i was pre mirena but definitely a lot more and everyday.for past 7 days. No cramps as such just an uncomfortable ache. Also my boobs were horrendously sore for past 2 weeks and bang i get this period. Its definitely unusual for me and will see my GP if im still bleeding over the weekend. Ill keep you posted. Have you sorted yours out yet and if so what has your GP advised. Good luck x

Hildak · 21/06/2018 11:24

I've been to gyne. my merina has reached its life end, as the hormones are as they say almost depleted.

Also I have a couple of ± 5-6cm cysts. seeing specialist 3 July and will make an appointment to have merina removed, and cysts taken care of

Zahraat · 30/10/2018 10:07

I got my mirena inserted last may, so have had it in almost a year and a half
my periods never stopped, just every month got less and less, until just about 5-7 days of brown spotting every time I would normally expect to have my period
this month my "period" was late by about 8 days, had my normal week of spotting, then after a couple of days of no spotting, I started spotting again for about 4 days, then after another 10 days of clear, now I'm spotting bright red and pink, whats going on I'm so confused
I really don't think I could be pregnant but I'm worried what it could mean
anyone got any ideas or something similar?

Meetooo · 02/11/2018 01:37

Hi sherry 1234. Did you have your mirena replaced? How did it go? I'm 43 and had mine in for 5 years and started Bleeding but I'm afraid of having it removed and replaced

Tori1971 · 17/12/2018 10:52

Hi, newbie here! I've had my Morena coil for nearly 4 yrs and recently had a lot of spotting, sometimes a bit more than spotting. It's mainly dark brown but also losing small clots which is a bit worrying. I had my coil fitted as my periods had become really painful with clots coming away. Dr suggested it may be my age and the coil would help which it did till recently. Should I be worried or like a lot of you, is it just coming to the end of its life??? I'm 47 btw, so could be something to do with menopause 😖😕

Tori1971 · 17/12/2018 10:53

Hi Meetooo, I'm scared of having mine removed and replaced too, it was so painful having it put in, I thought they were going to have my tonsils out !!!

Fairy03 · 07/02/2019 22:44

Hi all im new to this site,ok so im on my second marina coil and never bled with the first one,the second on i have had spotting when im run down or poorly,im due to have this one changed,im a bit worried as im having a very red period with allthe pains with it,anyone else had similiar?

MarieG10 · 16/02/2019 06:42

The Mirena tends to start running out of hormone at around the four year point, even though they say they are good for 5 years. I really like having it as my periods totally vanished which was great. My GP just changed it a little earlier than scheduled and my periods disappeared again
