Sudden period after 4 years with Mirena coil - anyone had this?

I've had a mirena coil for 4 years and it's been brilliant - no side effects, no periods (no babies!). I've had a bit of hormonal weirdness over the past month - dark patches appearing on my forehead, sore boobs and suddenly last night my period started with bad cramps.

Has this happened to anyone else? I've had a good Google but mainly just horror stories - it's difficult to find any proper info. I don't think it's moved or come out as I presume the period would be a lot heavier (they were fairly horrific pre coil).

Appreciate any thoughts if this has happened to anyone else.

I'm on my 2 round with the Mirena and I'm due to change it in March 2021 the last 6 days I have had a period should I worry about getting pregnant

I realise this is an old thread but for anyone reading - if you get an unexpected bleed while using Mirena I would recommend doing a pregnancy test. It happened to me and it was an ectopic pregnancy. It's worth just checking.

I’m so glad I found this thread, I’ve been using the Mirena for 11 years, originally to treat Hyperplasia with Atypia. Happy to say that all cleared up & I’ve had a large number of years with just bits of spotting & no periods at all. However, in the last 2 years my periods have come back, very slightly & only brown in colour at first, but in the last 6-12 months, they’ve come back heavy, painful & bright red. I’ve had this coil since Dec 2018. Spoke to my gynae, booking me in for a hysteroscopy to see if everything is ok & he’s suggested removing the coil to see if things settle. Has anyone else had theirs removed after issues ? How did it go ?

I’ve had the Mirena since 2016 and I have had my period the whole time. But since the last time I had sex in November 2019 I haven’t had a period. I’ve taken 2 pregnancy tests...one last month and one today. They were both negative! Any advice?

help! I'm 20 and have had the Mirena for 4 years. occasional spotting here and there but no full blown periods. I have been spotting for 2 weeks now (not much, not really enough to warrant a pad or anything). I am scared after reading stuff online. I have no other symptoms.. no cramps, fatigue, or anything. could this be normal?

I had the coil fitted about 6 months ago and my periods have just stopped (potentially they are never on time since) Since I had this coil fitted when I should have been starting my period I get an awful pain all through my parts (if you know what I mean😂) and it is excruciating to the point I have to curl up .. any explications ??

So glad I found this thread. Sorry for the long post.

Hi I have had the coil fitted for about 2 & a half years now. My periods have always been light every month just a bit of redness when I wiped. Some months they would be heavier then normal more redness, still classed as light if I don't have bleeding one month. In the last year I have noticed everytime I go away I would start bleeding. I could go 2 & half - 3 weeks between trips away with the family and I would start bleeding before, during or after. At the start of October I went away with a friend for a long weekend ( Thursday till Sunday) and I started bleeding. Got home it took about 4 days to stop. Then just over a week later I went away for a weekend away with the partner and kids. And I started bleeding again. Since then I have had constant bleeding having a few days. The most a weeks break from bleeding. I have contacted my GP but I can't get an appointment (never can) so I'm waiting for a phone call from the doctor. Has anybody else had this plz

@crosspelican thanks for the reply! I will defo get the nurse to check alls still in place. It's not something I've ever been able to check myself. My husband has never complained of feeling strings either, maybe mine were cut short lol!?
Still bleeding...
If the smear results are fine and this is still carrying on, like you I will get the dr to check things are as they should be.
I just didn't expect to have this issue at this point into my coil years! As I said I don't want it removed..
Have you booked with the private gp? Let me know how you get on. Smile

@Balletfeet - how strange! That's practically my exact experience of the last couple of weeks!

So I had my smear earlier this year and it was fine. I went to the GP yesterday and she had a dig and says the Mirena is in place just as it should be, and that the blood is definitely coming through my cervix (something it hadn't even entered my head to worry about!). She said it was just "one of those things" which didn't fill me with confidence, to be honest, and that if it continued that they could put me on the combined pill as well to make the bleeding go away again.

I wasn't massively reassured, although spotting has diminished today. I think I might go to the private GP I occasionally see if it goes on. She costs a fortune, but to be honest, an 8 minute appointment isn't really enough for something like this, surely, and it's certainly worth a few quid to get to the bottom of this.

When you go for your smear make sure that they confirm that your Mirena is actually THERE. Or can you feel it yourself?

The GP took the line that the Mirena people are VERY INVESTED in their product working long term. She definitely didn't feel that it could "wear out" early.

Anyway, it was a slightly pointless visit in that I'm still spotting, but at least we know the mirena is safely in place and nothing is weird up there.

Hey @crosspelican I was just about to create my own thread about this very same thing! So glad I've just seen your message.

I had mine inserted 3 and a half years ago and after the initial bleeds that go on for the first few weeks after insertion, it's been a total joy to have! My periods have stopped apart from the odd bit of spotting every now and again, and I've never had any problems or worries. It's been fantastic.

This has been until the last month, when all of a sudden I seem to be having constant bleeds. Light then heavy. I've had very mild cramping, nothing to worry about there. But it's just a bit of a shock to have this 'normal' period after such a long time and it's worrying me. I have been bleeding light to medium fresh blood now for 2 weeks and I'm a bit bored of it now!
Should I be worried, is this normal sometimes? Has anyone else had this happen, if so what did you do?

I'm due a smear test next week, so I'm hoping that will come back all ok.

I have 1 and a half years left of this coil to keep enjoying, so I definitely do not want it removed unless necessary!

Keep me posted with any info you find out Smile

Just came across this thread - I've had this mirena (my 2nd) for 3.5 years and had a light period last month and lots of annoying spotting and random bleeds this month. Nothing heavy, just irritating (not least because I bought scented liners by mistake this week - yuck!).

V glad to have found this thread - have made an appointment with the GP who deals with Mirenas at my practice to have a fiddle and see if it needs switching.

I've had Mirena for almost 4 years now and I love it. Though last month I had spotting that lasted all month long. Unfortunately, my doctor can't see me for at least another two weeks to see if it's still positioned right. I'm not going to lie I'm a little nervous... I've read some posts about it but nothing that really reassures that I'm fine. Has anybody else have a similar experience?

So I've had mirena for 7 years (first changed at 5). I've started with what I thought was a UTI. But seems it isn't. Lower abdominal pain, almost period like pain in my groin area, and blood in my wee. Been to docs on 2nd course of antibiotics, but nothing is showing up in urine tests. I was wondering could this be mirena related? As anyone else had these issues? TIA

I've had mirena for over 3 years. No problems no periods. But a few weeks ago had pink bleed after sex lasted a few days then last week had brown blood which lasted 6 days. 2 days into it , It was bitty I first thought was tissue bits after wiping but it wasn't this lasted 2 days had a bit of cramping a few sharp pains. Does anyone have any advice on this please

Had my Mirena coil changed yesterday and yes it's really uncomfortable but it was over in less than a minute. I wasn't looking forward to it but so glad I got on and had it changed. This is my third one. No heavy periods is such a life changer for me. I would definitely recommend getting one. Like others have said, the spotting and period symptoms always start coming back at around four years for me even though it's supposed to last five years.

For 3 years I've dealt with a steadily growing list of issues that I'm now realizing could be due to the IUD. Cysts, hair thinning, swelling breasts, hormone fluctuations, depression, anxiety, even suicidal thoughts. I'm 25 years old, and though I'm not a mom, I'm constantly feeling like my life is drained and almost non existant. Almost like the act of existing is often too much for me now. I've been prescribed NUMEROUS antidepressants/anxiety meds and nothing works. Nothing.

On top of that I have had constant spotting for almost 8 months now which started out of nowhere. My boobs constantly hurt and are swollen. Low sex drive. Thinning hair. Etc.

My final straw was the sudden, unexplained feelings/ mood swings I started having toward my boyfriend of 6 months. Literally a man who is absolutely perfect for me, one minute I'm infatuated with him and talking about a future together, the next I'm questioning our relationship. And its effected me with school and work too. I suddenly don't want to go to school or work (I'm s grad student working my dream job). Its almost like I no longer care to exist.

Around the time this started I had an ulta sound for the IUD (my strings had disappeared) and they noticed that the IUD had actually shifted and was sitting sideways (literally WTAF). So I had it removed last week.

Please tell me this gets better. I have an amazing life with an amazing man and I feel like I'm going insane.

The Mirena tends to start running out of hormone at around the four year point, even though they say they are good for 5 years. I really like having it as my periods totally vanished which was great. My GP just changed it a little earlier than scheduled and my periods disappeared again
