mooncup - horrid pain on trying to remove HELP!

Bought my first mooncup today, had a play around with it, and seemed easy enough to insert although it took a few goes because I got it too low down to start with.

I have just tried to remove it and Oh god, the pain nearly made me faint on the loo. It's like a searing pain and it seems to centre bizarrely on my rectum. A) WTF is going on and b) how do I get it out without passing out??!!!

I've made sure I've broken the suction so I don't think it's that.

I havent experienced this but I would suggest a lie down for a few minutes and get as relaxed as possible before trying again. Don't panic, you will get it out and I'm sure someone will be along with specific suggestions in a minute.

Thanks flamegirl, I had a lie down and a massive glass of wine and tried again. Still hurt a bit but not as bad....I've got a feeling I have a degree of prolapse and think I might have somehow got the mooncup suctioned over my cervix. Is that even possible, regular users/ people in the know??!!

ANyhoo, I am glad it's out. Don't think it will put me off indefinitely but maybe it won't be today when I try it again! Tampons have been a right faff since having baby number 2 - really heavy periods, crap pelvic floor muscles leading to, erm, tampons making their own unscheduled reappearnences etc. I was hoping the mooncup was the answer to my problems.

Have you been able to get a good grip on it? If it didn't hurt do you think you would be able to get it out? Or are you having trouble getting hold of it?

Oops! Glad you hotdog out. I was about to suggest a drink! The Mooncup people seem keen to engage with users so I'm sure they would respond if you got in touch to ask them about this. If you are able to keep going with it you will hopefully end up liking it as much as I like mine!

I think maybe you did not loosen the suction before you attempted to take it out first time.

No problem getting a good grip on it - I cut off the stem thing because it pokes out and gets in the way and frankly after 2 kids I have no fear of things getting lost or stuck in there [shame]

Bellavita I am thinking maybe you are right - and that to complicate matters it was over my cervix (a bit like a diaphragm is positioned, rather than further down as it's supposed to be)..bad combination, you don't want to be suctioning your cervix downward now, do you?????!

I did the same bloody thing myself when I first used mine. I really thought I was going to have to ask DH for his help

Have given up on it now tbh. I have tried and tried it for months, but I have started getting very heavy periods and the mooncup literally fills up within an hour

I had an awful mooncup experience not dissimilar. I now use a lunette cos they are less stiff and a bit smaller. Never had a problem since. This site is great for everything menstrual cup related, including tables on sizes and how stiff they are.

Oh I'm glad it's not just me bellavita . I know there are instructions on the packet about breaking the suction but I think maybe these should be in bold at the top... There is acomment in the linked thread about removal feeling equivalent to attempting a do-it-yourself hysterectomy which sounded about right at the time.

I thought I was going to have to ask DH for his help too.. These poor blokes, I am sure they're sometimes to be found thinking about the olden days when wives remained mysterious and coy. Or something.

alwayswild thanks for that - if I can't get on with the mooncup I might investigate that one. Kind of feel I should persevere having spent £20 on one.

Ow! I did find mine rather painful to insert and remove the first few times, and I was terrified of giving myself a DIY hysterectomy.

However, it soon stopped hurting at all - I think the mooncup just had to loosen up a bit

They are amazing so do keep going with it if you can.

Have you tried giving it a bit of a twist as you pull down? That works for me!
