But would you wear second hand swimwear that had only ever been washed in plain water? I just rinse and dry my own stuff too (as well as DCs') and am not adverse to second hand, but would want it cleaned more thoroughly between owners.

Personally no I would buy myself a new one whatever. Race suits though are designed to be water repellent aren’t they it isn’t like a second hand pair of knickers 🤢

itsgettingweird · 08/06/2024 15:19

Well we've never passed on race suits as ds wears through them.

Training wear I've washed on 30° with detergent if I've passed it on but only ever did that when ds went from jammers to those brief ones as before that he wore them through. (You have to remember ds bum shuffled around poolside so the arse gives out on his quite easily 🙈😂)

But the swimmers don't seem to care. They borrow spare training trunks from the depths of swim bags frequently 😂😂😂

itsgettingweird · 08/06/2024 15:20

Shuffles - it's sadly a present thing 🤦🏼‍♀️

SabrinaThwaite · 08/06/2024 16:11

The gloves sound interesting - were they the grippy kind to help get it on or white cotton (like you'd handle antiques with) to prevent tears?

I think they were the white cotton type to stop you poking a hole in them - we didn't buy them at that stage and all manoeuvring in and out of the things was done in the depths of the boys changing rooms!

Porseb · 08/06/2024 17:49

They sell these sorts of gloves in Japan for skins

So relieved it's much easier for boys, I'd have had several girls' suit to have repaired othwrwise, not to mention. The bleeding knuckles form putting them on.

I look at my (then) 15 yo DS’s fastskins and think ‘how the f@@@ did you ever get into those?’

They are tiny.

Are any swimmers competing in Edinburgh at end of the month?

Glittertwins · 09/06/2024 13:18

No, still trying to build up fitness for nationals instead.

DD is going to Europeans Smile

itsgettingweird · 09/06/2024 13:36

How's his GCSEs going?

Our swimmers are doing 1 preparation meet.

For some its OW regionals (which is also a nat qualifier) and some a L2 SC as also doubles up as winter nats qualifier.

Ds is going to Edinburgh.

Luckily for him it's same weekend as OW as his coach was desperate for him to try it as has paras this year.

He is solely a pool swimmer as was not keen in the slightest 😂😂

DD is going to Europeans Smile

Fabulous! Very well done to her.

Is it on the telly/Youtube?

In other news my "not swimming too much" DD is hoping to get lifeguard/swim teacher quals this summer.

I've pointed out that cleaning/receptionist jobs up at the local Uni's conference/holiday season pay far more but she isn't having it.

Porseb · 09/06/2024 14:18

No idea about livestream but it's in an outdoor pool which will be interesting for backstroke ....

Mine has the swim teaching qualification (there is big demand for that and pays quite well too).

Glittertwins · 09/06/2024 14:25

Check Eurovision for potential live stream

Hopefully will be on you tube. 🤞 Para euros were.

And yes, backstroke in the sunshine (hopefully!) should be interesting 🤔

I've heard David Lloyd pay their lifeguards well if you have one near you.

Bucks2015 · 10/06/2024 22:58

Hi everyone - my daughter (9) has just got into our local swim club and she’s loving it so far. She’s been having some trouble with her ears and currently has ‘swimmers ear’ infection. Any advice on how to prevent water getting in? Was looking at plugs/bands but not sure she’d be able to hear. She’s also got quite a strong glasses prescription so looking into prescription goggles. Sorry if this isn’t the place for these questions, I can start a new thread if needed but thanks for any guidance

Glittertwins · 11/06/2024 05:15

Hi!
Unfortunately water gets pretty much everywhere and from a coaching point of view, ear plugs are a nuisance because the swimmer can't hear what's being said. Coupled with a noisy environment of kids and other coaches it's very difficult for all.
I've also never bothered with prescription goggles although I've worn glasses since before I started swimming. The amount of leaks and not so well fitting goggles plus change in prescriptions makes them not worth it in my opinion. As long as they can count to 5 for the interval between the previous swimmer and them, that's enough and any coach will tell them when to go with the pace clock if they can't see it clearly too.

Hi and welcome.

Absolutely this is the place for all swim club questions and chat!

It's a friendly board with a range of swimmers from all around competing at all sorts of levels.

Most of what I know has been learned here and I still make it up as I go along mostly 😂

Can't answer your question better than glitter but welcome and I hope your DD enjoys her journey through swimming.

Hellocatshome · 11/06/2024 08:28

Hi @Bucks2015 unfortunately I dont have the answers but I would ask the coach regards ear plugs and prescription goggles, they have normally seen it all before and got good info on this stuff and if they dont know they generally know someone who does.

Porseb · 11/06/2024 08:45

I know some swimmers my DD has swum with used like an ear putty thing which is quite malleable.

Have a look at Swans prescription goggles.
