NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

It was a non auditioned residential skills course. My child has never done one of those but I searched back on my twitter and found a thread about it

@Cherylf123 ah, that's good to hear of your DC also doing Unbound. My DD hadn't heard of too many doing this one, most from her show last year seem to be on Serene. It does sound like a great show!

@allhailthebrain interesting about NYMT feedback - I didn't realise they would provide this as I'm sure in the past they said they couldn't. Might not have been possible for my DC though as they didn't get to recall stage this time. Good to know for the future though as even a little feedback can be helpful and encouraging for them for next time.

@Mumster40 it really is nailbiting - and lots of juggling too I imagine. We find ourselves in exactly the same boat as last year with 1 DC in a show, and one on the shortlist, although with the roles reversed. It was right down to the wire and in the end did get placed last year. I would say it was worth the juggling and waiting because my DC had a great time and learnt a lot from the show. So now the wait begins, and once again holding off on booking holidays and other stuff.

On another note- NYMT folks, where is Into the Woods being performed? We love the show and I'd quite like to go along and see this in the summer if it's not too far away.

Biscuitsneeded · 23/02/2024 13:43

@wonderfullife123 Congrats to your DD who has a place with BYMT - I'm sure the other will be hot on her heels!

All 3 main NYMT shows are being performed at Southwark Playhouse Elephant this year (not the original one at Borough). Hope you can make it to ITW!

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded will definitely try to go. I'm sure it will be fabulous.

Hugeccongrats to all the BYMT 24! A friends daughter is doing BYMT for the first time this year. I remember when my ds did BYMT and NYMT they both had Facebook pages and then from that the kids set up WhatsApp/snapchat type groups. Her dd is a bit nervous for the first time. I wondered if there are any such groups for Easter Animal Farm?

I think workshop may have been £1500 when mine did it! We did actually turn it down last year simply because we couldn’t justify it for the length of experience, especially given he had workshopped the previous year.

Very valuable experience though, he loved it, learned a lot and made some great friends and contacts.

i think there’s also an element of a show being able to recoup some cost from selling tickets to 6 shows, which the workshop doesn’t have.

Hi everyone - first time poster on mumsnet (though I should be in the area for dads?).

Our daughter (DD?) has a place for BYMT's When We Strike this year. It will be her first BYMT experience (she's lucky having got in to a show at the first time of trying..!).

Does anyone else have a child in this show? We're completely new to this whole experience - she's a dancer primarily so we're more used to the dance world.

Any tips/guidance/support would be very welcome..! Thank you.

Looks like the deadline for NYMT musician applications has been extended to March 8th, from the original deadline of Feb 28th.

Mumster40 · 27/02/2024 17:37

Does anyone know the rehearsal dates for the various BYMT shows? I’m trying to figure out if I have a window to book a holiday as we are on the dreaded waiting list and won’t know more until the end of March…. So I’m looking to find out what the first rehearsal date is for the first production…..! I’d really appreciate any dates people with offers have been given. Thanks so much x

Hi @Mumster40 looks from Bymt website like first summer show is All Growed up with production weekend of 2nd August so I assume rehearsals start 20th July based on a 2 week project? I'm sure Bymt would confirm the dates if asked.

allhailthebrain · 27/02/2024 23:09

Hello @OMITN and welcome!

I’m sorry I don’t know the answer to your BYMT question - hopefully someone else has more info than me!

Congratulations to your daughter in the meantime!!

wonderfullife123 · 28/02/2024 08:34

Hello @OMITN welcome and congrats to your DD! When we strike looks like such a fun show. My DDs did BYMT last year and one has a place this year, but for a different show though I know a couple of the girls they know from last year are doing Strike as well. Last year was my DDs first experience with Bymt and they had a fantastic time. The pastoral care was great and they came away having learnt a lot. Last year the Bymt team set up a couple of zoom calls before hand so the cast could meet virtually and were also asked to self tape some of the material from the show and send it in as they cast the parts in the first couple of days. They also set up a FB group in advance and I'm sure a Snapchat group got going before the production. With Bymt they are there for a full two weeks but there was a chance to visit on the middle weekend though most parents did not in that instance due to the location. We sent our DDs with plenty of snacks which was good as the food was typical school type food and they tired of it understandably. The pastoral team would also take them out to do a Tesco run from time to time to stock up. I'm sure others on the thread with more Bymt experience will have more tips. Rest assured I'm sure your DD will love it.

Apologies for poor writing am having terrible trouble posting from my phone with it constantly freezing and scrolling to the bottom of the thread .

Hi and welcome, my DC did her first BYMT last year. Had the best time, 2 weeks doing what she loved. Not really any advice/tips to be honest as BYMT as just so good and take care of everything once they are there.

You mentioned about setting up a WhatsApp, last year BYMT helped to set one up before the rehearsal weeks and a Facebook page too.

If you have any specific questions let me know.

OMITN · 28/02/2024 16:49

Thanks for the welcomes and info.

Noted on the BYMT self-taking info. That’s a good heads up. Assume it will cover singing/acting/movement?

thanks also for the practical suggestions. DD isn’t much of a school dinners eater, more a packed lunch kid. So we’ll plan ahead for that.

Also Interesting that it isn’t automatic that parents are expected to be too closely on hand - we’re north west England and she’ll be in London (well, Roehampton).

Really appreciate the insights..!

wonderfullife123 · 28/02/2024 17:17

You're welcome @OMITN- with the self tape this is what they did last year on the show my DDs were on but not sure if they always do it. If I recall it was primarily vocals. Last year my girls were up in Scotland and we were miles away which felt strange but was absolutely fine.

OMITN · 28/02/2024 18:56

Awesome! Thanks. Sadly vocals not her strongest of the three…. Best get practising..!

wonderfullife123 · 28/02/2024 20:30

@OMITN

Please don't worry about prep for this as it was very informal and DD said more about vocal range. As I say they may not do it on every show. I'd just wait and see for more info from Bymt nearer the time. Sorry to have caused any confusion.

LibbyRuncie · 29/02/2024 19:20

Has anyone had the payment email from NYMT yet please?

Biscuitsneeded · 29/02/2024 19:26

@LibbyRuncie I think my DS has, but they may not have sent them for every show yet. Is it CB your DD is in? I will ask another CB parent...

OP posts:
LibbyRuncie · 29/02/2024 19:29

@Biscuitsneeded yes please CB! My Dd is worried we’ve missed it and they’ll give her place away! 😂

Biscuitsneeded · 29/02/2024 19:35

@LibbyRuncie did you reply to accept the place? I think the first payment isn't due until 8th March so you've got a week yet, and they may not have sent out all the invoices. I'll let you know when my friend who is a CB parent gets back to me!

OP posts:
LibbyRuncie · 29/02/2024 19:39

@Biscuitsneeded yew did the form and took a screen shot of the message saying it’s completed! Think it’s because we’re newbies to this! Yes please if your friend can let you/me know I would be grateful! I didn’t know whether to email them about it!
