NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

Yes it’s a gorgeous show, we feel very attached to it Dd3 workshopped it first time round, Dd1 performed in it last year, and now DS will be workshopping it this year ❤️ it’s such a special story

NCMO2G · 21/02/2024 22:17

@Melwingingit thats the same course my dd was offered 😊 great news! 🙌

Melwingingit · 21/02/2024 22:19

@NCMO2G oh great. Have you done it before- any tips? Will have to find accommodation is the only issue as we are up North.

Biscuitsneeded · 21/02/2024 22:28

I turned my back for a few hours thinking there couldn't possibly be results this early, and it all happens! Congratulations to all those cast either in a show or a workshop or an advanced skills workshop! It's all so new and different but it sounds like a lot of fabulous opportunities. @allhailthebrain has already offered some wise words on the way these things can work out when the DC feel pure elation one year and then a degree of disappointment another year if it's not quite what they wished for, but I honestly think every opportunity is a good one. The standard this year must have been amazing. Well done to them all.

@Melwingingit no this is all new to us - my dd is only 12 so first time auditioning. - it would be good to know a bit more about the Workshop week!

Melwingingit · 21/02/2024 22:33

@NCMO2G aah it’s our first time too my DD is 16 - are you close to Waterloo - will you be booking accommodation?

NCMO2G · 21/02/2024 22:40

@Melwingingit we live way down west, but have family in london, so I’m hoping we can stay with them , or I can send dd on her own for a few days in the middle as also have her sister to look after/ ferry round to her commitments! - it will be a juggle as always!

allhailthebrain · 21/02/2024 23:03

Hi, just in regards to the non residential skills course - we have actually done something like it with them. We did it before auditioning, to kind of try them out I guess! So this is a few years ago.

I can tell you it was what got my kid hooked. It was very well run and secure (mine was young, that was important to me!) and it always ran to time too. From that very first time they met my kid, every one of them knew him by name - even on not seeing each other for several years! I appreciate that kind of personal touch personally. Every concert, audition and random passing in the canteen since, he's been greeted by name.
In our case it was a 3 day thing - you could book the days separately or all at once and anyone could go so it's not the same as this, but there will be aspects I'm sure. For some sessions he had to prepare a song and bring the sheet music. Great prep for auditions and for the kid of training my kid now does all the time - builds your repertoire too! They had lots of different creatives in, and even a famous NYMT alumni (Jenna Russell - but remember this was an advertised day course) - all fabulous and great at answering questions too. The kind of training that didn't come up for us (way up in the north) and I really think was worth it.

I booked a nearby premier inn and while they were training, I was out scouting for cheap last minute theatre tickets, which is where we spent our evenings, so even more learned there.

Hope that helps a little bit! They were pretty good at non res courses, even then.

NCMO2G · 21/02/2024 23:11

Thanks @allhailthebrain that’s helpful to know that info. 😊

Youarenotseriouspeople · 21/02/2024 23:21

Well done to everyone!!!
DD has been offered the Lightning Boy workshop which she is really pleased with - we are just trying to see if we can make the dates work.....

Melwingingit · 21/02/2024 23:35

@allhailthebrain thank you so much. I will look into it

doesanybodyhaveamap · 22/02/2024 07:57

Congrats on all the offers! Just want to second what @allhailthebrain said as we had a similar experience with a non-auditioned skills course when DC was 10. Also gave them the bug. And from then on they have also been known by name and made to feel part of the family.

We've had a mixed run- cast (covid year), recall but no casting, cast again, then no recall. DC is a musician and even in the years they've not been cast as performer has had at least one show in the band. So NYMT is their happiest of happy places and it all started with a skills course.

MxPickles · 22/02/2024 10:06

Well done to all the DC cast and offered workshops!

Biscuitsneeded · 22/02/2024 11:03

@LibbyRuncie @Kittykat57 Many congratulations to your DC on getting cast for what I imagine is the first time? They will have the best time. Just to reassure you, the pastoral team at NYMT is completely amazing and they will be very well looked after.

LibbyRuncie · 22/02/2024 12:14

@Biscuitsneeded thank you! Yes first time! The pastoral team at audition and call back were fantastic and she came home from both beaming and happy! As much as I am obviously eeeek about her being away she has been away for a week at a time on a few occasions with guiding including going on a plane! I am so excited for her!

MxPickles · 22/02/2024 12:55

BYMT Parents this is not a drill - check your emails!

DD has been offered Power of Camelot - Thrilled to be offered a show but of course it had to be the Theatre furthest away from us :D

Belshels · 22/02/2024 13:07

Congratulations to your DD Pickles!! Camelot sounds like a good one👍🏼

My DD has just an offer.for Serene which is in The New Wolsey in Ipswich. She really wanted to go back to Belfast, so will see what she has to say. Looks like an interesting show though, lots of opportunities for idea contribution by the performers I suspect. Improv and ideas are one of her strengths xx

Belshels · 22/02/2024 13:08

Huge congratulations to everyone cast in NYMT as well xx

Congrats to your DD, I know you had said they were very attached to the Breadboy series, but the casting team must have something specific in mind for our DC when they allocated them the shows they have. Can't wait to see what it is they have in mind!

I am surprised DD got Camelot as she is most confident in dance so thought perhaps she would be in the running for Wonderland in Alice. Not complaining - just a bit surprised at the outcome. Camelot does seem like a really good show though and I am super excited for her :)

Biscuitsneeded · 22/02/2024 13:41

Congratulations to everyone getting good news from BYMT today! Wow, both companies have been so speedy with their news this year! Hats off to them because it can't be easy.

Comefromaway · 22/02/2024 13:47

My daughter's friend was the original Alice in Wonderland in Alice when it was performed with the dance company.

It is currently being workshopped at a university and they are experimenting with lots of different directions from what I gather.

OldBrum · 22/02/2024 14:04

Hello
I’d be grateful if anyone could explain BYMT’s second stage casting offer to me please.
My DD has been shortlisted and offered 2nd stage casting in late March

many thanks

yodaforpresident · 22/02/2024 14:09

Very excited here for DD who has been offered Welcome to Serene. Only slight issue is that she is supposed to start her new school on the 30th....

Congratulations to all the DC. I can't believe how quick it has all been this year.

lindtchocolate · 22/02/2024 14:26

hi everyone. ds has been offered a workshop for NYMT and Camelot for BYMT but the dates clash. i'd be really interested in what other people who've done this before think would be the best choice - it's the first time he's got through for either.

I've not heard of them doing this before, is it a new thing? Last time DD auditioned it was 3 years ago mind.
