Hi all - I thought it was a while since we've had a new thread so how about one for the new school year? Would be lovely to pick up some new families too, all welcome at any stage of music learning from out of tune singing 2 yr olds to music college aspirants.

Happy New Year! It's been nice hearing about Christmas services and concerts. It feels like things are more ' normal ' this year, whatever that is/ was. We have lots to look forward to. Festivals, competitions, exams, residentials.
With regards to the grade 8 performance/ practical, it's hard to know, can you ask the teacher? If they intend to apply for conservatoire, they probably assess scales either at audition or on an ongoing basis anyway so they would need to keep them up. Doing a recorded grade 8 is no mean feat though, quite an endurance test to do that without too many mistakes. We have two this year, probably June and December, as opposed to two grade sevens on consecutive days like last year! It's a shame they can't ' bank' the aural for that grade rather than have to do it again! DD got same mark on consecutive days which at least shows the examiner was consistent!

Hi all- out of curiosity how many slight finger slips (if you recover from them well) do you think you can make in piano grade 1 (Trinity) and still get a distinction?

northerngoldilocks · 09/01/2023 12:12

@MomFromSE not sure anyone can really answer that as would depend on lots of things- but the mark scheme might help gauge where a performance fell in the range.

MomFromSE - I think they can get away with a lot if they don't let it interrupt the flow. Keep musicality, dynamics, rhythm and character going and you can get away with a few wrong notes. But if fixing the wrong notes interrupts the flow of the piece, you start losing marks from other areas too.

Really thought someone else would get around to this before me so please let me know if I've duplicated.
