NYO 2022

My DS is preparing to apply for NYO.
He said the application form is quite hard to fill as so many questions to answer (Like mini essays for about 10 topics).
He just has started looking at the excerpts, also needs to upload contrasted pieces too. DS knows he is not good enough yet but as he is interested in NYO inspire too, he will give it a go!
It would be great to hear about either NYO or NYO inspire's experience.

Slippersandcake ... 'She’s at state school and the one she was rejected from were very very negative about that in the interview!!' ... do tell which conservatoire dared to take this attitude!

Hello -

my DD is considering applying for NYO this year, but I'm concerned about the commitment. I know what a great opportunity it is, and if the first residential goes well then the connection with other musicians is invaluable. It does seem like a very big step for her though. She is 14.

Could any of the NYO 2022 members give me an idea of how their DC found the course this year? Is it a delicate balance with school work / family time during the holidays etc.?

mydarkstar95 · 26/05/2022 20:28

Following with interest as my DD has just applied for the first time and is getting ready to record her audition. She's in Year 11. All advice appreciated!

Morning. My ds had his first residential this year. He’s in year 10 so thus far hasn’t had any mega important exam pressure. Although he did say in the spare time in the evening he’d designated for a bit of study he’d found himself to be so tired that he often didn’t bother. The days were very full on but he’s enjoyed it so much. And with each residential he’s got to meet more people and find new friends. He’s applying again this year, so who knows how it will go with his GCSE study if he gets in. I’m sure he’d manage to juggle it! Very invaluable experience so I definitely recommend applying. The buzz of the actual performances has been immense for him, and indeed for us to watch! Hope this helps in some way! Good luck to all your dc’s.

Anyone heard the outcome of the video submissions as yet? DS has not heard anything

mydarkstar95 · 12/07/2022 02:47

Not yet, but it should be this week I think?

Vijaycobes · 12/07/2022 10:11

Good luck to all!

Maryward · 12/07/2022 12:42

Hi didn’t get an email but there is information on assessment day when I logged onto my kid’s account! Good luck to all😀

mydarkstar95 · 12/07/2022 13:10

Just got an email with invitation to final round assessment!

Maryward · 12/07/2022 13:31

Very exciting ! Hopefully they’ll get through the next round 😀

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 13/07/2022 19:46

Huge congratulations to those through to the next round! It's very impressive given the numbers of applicants and high standards. Fingers crossed for you all.

My elder DC applied but didn't make the cut this time round, although she has automatically been enrolled in Inspire. She was pretty stoical though, and commented that this will no doubt be the first of many knockbacks if she does decide that she wants to be a professional musician! She's already preparing material for another orchestral audition on Sunday, and she has a few more years to try again for NYO Smile.

We just watched the NYO concert on TV, how amazing and well done if your kids were in this. DD now inspired to investigate this, would be eligible for inspire as state school, what's the commitment like? We are in Scotland so it would involve traveling but I must admit it being free ( is inspire really all free?) is a draw as NYOS is so expensive.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 20/08/2022 09:21

Hey horsey. Inspire is great, and really is all free. The catch financially is travel. There are a few residential activities, but certainly most of what my DC did last year were long single days (09.30-18.30). Add a few hours travel on to that and some are only really practical if you stay over the night before.

However a night in a premier Inn a few times a year is still lots cheaper than NYO proper!

horseymum · 20/08/2022 10:05

Thanks for that. Is it all on Saturdays, or during the holidays? Dd is at a jd so couldn't do Saturdays in term time.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 20/08/2022 10:15

Our days were all Sundays, although not everyone gets offered the same activities, so I can't say for certain that Saturdays aren't offered.

I would guess though that they're mindful that almost all members (and tutors!) will have other commitments, and chances are these would be on Saturdays, hence favouring Sundays.

Also you don't have to do everything that's offered - you sign up for each thing individually.

Poseidensgrumpyneighbour · 07/09/2022 16:30

Anyone else have DC doing the 2nd round NYO auditions at the mo? DD has hers tomorrow and is desperate to get in. Really hoping it's a positive experience for her either way. Do you know if those who are eligible automatically get offered NYO Inspire once they are through to the 2nd round?

Maryward · 07/09/2022 17:55

Audition at the weekend, dc also desperate to get in!! Dc worrying about everything now, hopefully it will be a positive experience and dc won’t be too disappointed if unsuccessful. I’ve said chances are slim but not listening to me.
Not sure about nyo inspire.
Results out 23rd so maybe will find out if it’s nyo or nyo inspire then?

violinkid · 07/09/2022 18:04

DC also auditioning this week; not eligible for Inspire so very keen to get a place….very much a long shot….

mydarkstar95 · 07/09/2022 21:39

My DD has hers on Saturday. Her friends who have done it have told her it's a really fun workshop/learning experience regardless. She really wants to get a place though! Not eligible for Inspire.

Poseidensgrumpyneighbour · 07/09/2022 22:16

nice to hear from you all, and best of luck to your DC. At least they don’t have to wait too long for results.

horseymum · 09/09/2022 21:08

Hope the auditions go well. We put a last minute inspire application in, will see if anything comes of it.

Vijaycobes · 13/09/2022 15:33

I hope everyone’s dc enjoyed their audition day. Does anyone know what date they hear the results?

Notaclu · 13/09/2022 17:00

i think they said one or around the 23rd sept

Notaclu · 21/09/2022 19:18

How did your DC get on? DC (strings) got some residential playing offered but not a full place; it was a long shot so all good

mydarkstar95 · 21/09/2022 19:52

My dd got a place in violin 2. Lots of excitement here tonight 😊
