ABRSM - no results for exams done

63 replies

MrsKypp · 20/03/2020 21:00

I have seen there's a thread about the exams that have now been cancelled.

This is about not getting results back for exams that were already done before the cancellation date.

Are the ABRSM not going to let people know their results?

They say on their website that results should be published within a week; however, it'll be 3 weeks on Monday for us.

Ours still says pending in my login but the teacher has given us the result. The exam was last week, though it feels like a lifetime ago. I was wondering if they hold back the results for parents so that the children (in normal circs) can hear it from their teachers?

raspberryrippleicecream · 21/03/2020 09:21

ABRSM moved to working from home last week, I expect that slowed things down.

MrsKypp · 21/03/2020 14:41

@AmberleighMouse

Oh I hadn't thought of that, thanks for your reply. Their teacher said she hadn't heard either though.

Good you got your results - it means they are at least processing some of them still.

@raspberryrippleicecream

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I know they're working from home (good thing!) but if others have heard who did exams last week, then why haven't we with exams done almost 3 weeks ago now?

It would be great to have something to celebrate right now. (Optimistic about passing - fingers crossed).

Get the teacher to chase them up. They can be slow. I have always ended up waiting 3 weeks.

Madcats · 21/03/2020 16:58

Yes we've not heard, having done exams on 4th and 6th. DD is so chuffed to have got them out of the way I've not been chasing for the results.

Somewhat related there is an exam board called MTB that does all its "exams" online, and people were urging it to incorporate ABRSM and trinity syllabuses into the system. Normally they student's music teacher simply records the students playing, emails it across and it is assessed?

I've held off ordering any grade 6 stuff - I'll let DD play around with the music she has or things she finds on the internet for now. I am sure she will be stressed enough over these coming weeks without trying to tackle a tricky new piece.

MrsKypp · 21/03/2020 19:06

@Sillyscrabblegames

Thanks - good to know you also waited 3 weeks. The teacher has tried to contact them but no response apparently.

@Madcats

I know what you mean - we are so relieved we were before the cut off point for not doing the exams this session. At least they did them!

I didn't know about the online exam board. I expect a lot more things will be done that way from now on.

Good idea about playing things they know. Mine have got a scales book that also has pieces that they never learned, but is presumably at the same level.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I'll let you know once we hear. Fingers crossed for all who are still waiting for results.

3 weeks ago today now exactly and their teacher received this email from the ABRSM:

Dear applicant,

Your candidate(s) recently sat their practical music exam(s) with us. Unfortunately, we have encountered a delay in publishing their results. We are working hard with our technical colleagues to resolve this issue so that your candidates receive their results soon.

Please accept our apologies for this unplanned delay and we will be in touch again next week if we are still unable to release these results to you.

Kind regards

How frustrating! I didn't realise how lucky we were.

MrsKypp · 24/03/2020 16:40

@AmberleighMouse

Yes - great you got your results :-)

No idea how many of us haven't heard. My family is waiting for 3 results. At least the ABRSM responded to the teacher so we know they are working on it.

More than I would normally, I really hope all 3 results are successful. Thinking about what to do if not e.g. 2 yes and 1 no. Fingers crossed all will have passed. I will update here when I finally know.

OP posts:
Alsoplayspiccolo · 25/03/2020 09:04

No results here from exams taken 2 weeks ago.
Really frustrating, given that I know teachers whose pupils got their results after 3 days, taken on the same day at a different centre.

MrsKypp · 25/03/2020 14:12

@Alsoplayspiccolo

That is seriously unfair! The ABRSM need to at least be consistent. We all understand things can be delayed at the moment, but letting some know so quickly while others have waited weeks is not right.

We have now been waiting for 23 days. At least mine came out of the exam feeling confident, but you never know do you.

OP posts:
LesLavandes · 25/03/2020 14:17

Calm down. We are in a state of crisis. I am sure you will here soon enough and that they are doing their best.

Madcats · 25/03/2020 14:25

When I am a bit stressed, I usually have a dream that I was entered for an A level they didn't tell me about (I am mid-50's). It has now switched to opening the post to discover DD received 30% for her G5 Theory and wondering how I should break it to her.

I must admit that I have not looked at the ABRSM website, but I would far rather they set themselves a realistic target (like end of April/mid May) and stopped drip-feeding the results out.
I keep wondering whether they have mislaid the marking schedules/sheets for practicals and the scripts for the Theory.

So we'll just keep waiting.

MrsKypp · 25/03/2020 14:26

@LesLavandes

I'm calm, thanks - it's nothing to do with calm or not calm. It's to do with consistent treatment of candidates, which I consider important.

I do think we are in a state of crisis, I agree with you on that one. However, I think the results should be released consistently, so for example after 2 weeks, or 3 weeks or 6 weeks if necessary NOT 3 days for some and a month for others.

We are talking about children and they are very vulnerable right now.

OP posts:
MrsKypp · 25/03/2020 14:29

@Madcats

Completely agree with you.

It's easy for someone to patronise others with the phrase "calm down". It's a put down, not genuine advice.

Madcats, keeping my fingers crossed for you. let me know how your DD does once you finally hear. I will let you know about my DSs.

OP posts:
TeenPlusTwenties · 25/03/2020 14:32

Just tell your child the results will be delayed due to all the disruption.
They don't need to know others are getting them.
For all you know the examiner is ill.

If the most your children have to worry about right now is a music exam you are very lucky, you need to try to keep this in perspective.

MrsKypp · 25/03/2020 14:42

@TeenPlusTwenties

I actually totally see your point. One of mine has missed his A-levels but glad he at least got his music exam done. Mine are not great music talents, so yes, it's not greatly important.

They shouldn't have told us at the exam centre they'd hear within a week though. The ABRSM should also remove that from the website.

I just think exam boards need to remain consistent. It's the only fair way.

Other than that, yes, very true, a music exam result is insignificant right now in life.

OP posts:
Alsoplayspiccolo · 25/03/2020 14:44

Teen, I don’t think that comment is kind or fair.
Of course there are greater things to worry about, but you could say that to all the people worried about their child’s schooling, all the people worried that they can’t get their car MOT’d , anything that isn’t a concern about dying.
Sorry, but in times of crisis, a semblance of “life as normal” is what stops people going into blind panic and breakdown.
ABRSM as a business aren’t directly involved with fighting the virus. All their exam process is now online, so it’s not unreasonable to ask what’s going on, with regards to results, especially given that we’re talking about exams taken a week or more before the virus became a working issue (ABRSM claims exam results will be issued within a fortnight, under their new digital process).

MrsKypp · 25/03/2020 14:46

@Alsoplayspiccolo

Thank you!

You have hit the nail on the head:

"in times of crisis, a semblance of “life as normal” is what stops people going into blind panic and breakdown."

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 25/03/2020 14:47

DS took ABRSM Guitar G2 on 12 March, shortly before exams were cancelled. I got an email from his music teacher on 22 March with his result.

TeenPlusTwenties · 25/03/2020 14:52

Sorry, I agree not very fair.

I think wanting the results to give good news is normal, but I do think children of all ages can be told to just wait.

I'm not in a great place as my y10s mental health was on a knife edge before this all happened and she is now over a cliff hanging on by her fingernails.

I probably should have stayed clear of this thread.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 25/03/2020 15:06

Teen, I am sincerely sorry your y10 child is struggling. There is nothing worse for a parent than to see their child unhappy and not being able to make things easier for them.
These are such hard times for our DC, especially those closer to the end of their school years; I hope you can find support for your DC. Flowers

Glittertwins · 25/03/2020 16:09

Glad I found this. DD did her theory exam on the 4th. We haven't heard anything yet. If I create a log in to ABRSM, am I able to find out or do I have to go through the teacher?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 25/03/2020 16:36

Glittertwins, unless you have the log in details of the person who entered your child for the exam, you can’t get the results or check that they’re there.

MrsKypp · 25/03/2020 17:26

@BikeRunSki

So yours took 10 days to get the results. Thanks for letting us know :-)

@Glittertwins

Your DD's exam was 2 days after ours.

I've heard that it's normal to wait longer for theory exams, not sure if that is correct? Let us know when you hear. Hope she did as well as she was hoping to.

@TeenPlusTwenties

So, so sorry to hear that Flowers Wishing you strength x I hope there will be support for her. Thinking of you both.
