Hi all

Here is the new music thread for January - I hope no one minds me starting it.

I am mum to a son (7) who is learning the piano and trumpet and a daughter (5) who is learning the piano and violin. I am having piano lessons and played the trumpet as a child.

Some of the people on these threads (and their children) are fantastic musicians. Some are more like me. All are welcome.

Thank you to Wafflenose for all the time she has spent managing these threads.

Yes I like these threads. Shall I start a new one for February or shall I just ask MN to change the title to “January and February music thread”?

CruCru, thank you for thinking of the next thread.Smile We could continue as Jan & Feb thread so that it's easier to follow what has been discussed previously. Or we could start a new one in the hope of attracting more people to join in? This thread has been quest (but January is quest generally?)...

Boyskeepswinging · 31/01/2019 19:25

We're only on 178 messages so no problem with making this "and February". Unless we have a super busy night tonight!

NeleusTheStatue · 31/01/2019 19:27

What wrong with my typing really... quest/quest = QUIET...

catkind · 31/01/2019 20:05

Thanks crucru, whichever you prefer.

We're at a slightly down point, exam music is learned but they're being lazy and hacking through with too many mistakes, even DD who is usually a good practiser. I am declaring next week stop as soon as something goes wrong week.

CruCru · 31/01/2019 22:02

Okay, the thread title is changed, thanks to MNHQ.

My children had all their lessons today plus I’d invited a couple of their friends for a play date after school. So I had two instruments, three music bags and four book bags to get home (plus four children). Thank goodness for the shopping trolley.

Thanks, CruCru.

I am planning to be back for April, but did spy some slightly dodgy activity on a couple of music related threads recently (again!) so not entirely happy about that. And I'm not accusing any of you lovely lot!!

Rara cleaned up at the festival this week - 5 individual medals and 2 individual cups, and 2 shared cups. Will find a photo at some point.

NeleusTheStatue · 31/01/2019 23:24

Thanks CruCru for asking MNHQ.

Hi Waffle! So you have 5 medals and 4 cups added to your home? Well done, Rara!

Currently DS has multiple teachers due to his main teacher being away. Rumour has it that his teacher gypsy life will continue till April/May. This week he had a lesson with a college student. Nothing wrong with a college student teaching, but we still pay for the same rate as the main teacher with a lot more experience, so I am a bit... Hmm

A first last night! I supervised na piobairi uileann practice. I love music but haven't a clue. I listened anyway and taught DS 2 how to introduce a tune. With forthcoming audition in mind.

Slightly complicated situation with DS1 who is in one orchestra but has now got involved with another. New orchestra has a practice this weekend and negotiations are ongoing.

busyspinning · 01/02/2019 06:54

I spend my whole life negotiating on behalf of ds !! Everything always clashes with something - but we get there !

Lotsofmilkonesugar · 01/02/2019 09:18

Well done to Rara waffle !

LooseAtTheSeams · 01/02/2019 10:06

A triumph for Rara! Star
Not masses to report here except DS2 has joined a lovely new orchestra and has weekend rehearsals with his borough string ensemble for the next few weeks ready for a concert at the Albert Hall.
Am I a bad person for slightly hoping today's piano lesson gets cancelled due to the snow? It won't and he does need to go - g5 exam is later this term! His pieces sound great - apart from the niggly little places that need focus! Sigh. And at some point I have to become scales tyrant again just to make sure they're ready for the exam.

littleladsdad · 01/02/2019 10:58

Well done to Rara Waffle! Ooh, concert at RAH Loose - fab!

Excited to be attending our first proper concert at ds's new school tonight. Just the small matter of the 175 mile round trip and overnight stay to make it happen. Hope the weather behaves itself. Hmm

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

LooseAtTheSeams · 01/02/2019 12:34

littleladsdad Really hope the weather is kind to you and the concert goes well!
RAH sounds impressive but DS2 will be a tiny dot among many from across the borough! Great fun and an amazing experience, though!

Mitsouko67 · 01/02/2019 16:34

Concerts are so exciting and make it all worthwhile. Enjoy RAH and good luck with concert in new school.

Wiifitmama · 01/02/2019 20:49

@Looseattheseams - is the RAH concert CONVO? Triborough? If so, my kids are in that too. They are counting the days until it is over and can get back to normal music! Plus the rehearsals are taking over some weekends where they are having to miss other stuff.

LooseAtTheSeams · 01/02/2019 21:14

No - we’re in one small and relatively insignificant borough in SW London. And yes, the weekend rehearsals complicate life a bit! On the other hand, DS2 doesn’t do any sport, so we have got off lightly over the years and I can’t complain.

NeleusTheStatue · 01/02/2019 21:21

I thought I could be CONVO too. Grin Nevertheless both sound such a fantastic experience for young musicians!

NeleusTheStatue · 01/02/2019 21:22

IT could be CONVO...

Luckyfab · 01/02/2019 21:25

@Wiifitmama
My DD plays in the Tri borough orchestra too.
I m so looking forward the Convo concert. Grin

Wiifitmama · 01/02/2019 21:29

@luckyfab mine are not the orchestra - they are in another group. I am not really looking forward to it to be honest. The music is weird, they are not playing for long but will have to be there from 12pm on the day for a concert in the evening, and the rehearsals are clashing with other music commitments they have. I do feel a bit bah humbug about it all! However, I have dutifully bought the tickets and will be there to watch them.

Luckyfab · 01/02/2019 21:39

@Wiifitmama
It will be a long day but I think it will be also a great experience to be behind the scenes at the RHA. I am sure they will all benefit from this experience.

LooseAtTheSeams · 01/02/2019 21:43

We're a couple of weeks after CONVO - I had to look that up to see what it was but it sounds very interesting!

Wiifitmama · 01/02/2019 21:46

Luckyfab - I am sure it will be great and they are certainly lucky to be able to perform there. But it has seemed to take over for more than a year and I will be glad when they can get back to their normal music rehearsals.
