May Music Thread

Have a new thread for May... you all managed to fill the April one!

This is a place to chat about music lessons, exams, practice, aural, theory, performances and anything else you like. We have many regular and occasional posters (some of whom are learning themselves) with children ranging from complete beginners to very advanced. We do try our best to make sure everyone feels welcome!

I am mum to Goo (12) flute and piano, and Rara (9) cello and clarinet. They play in loads of school groups, South West Music School and NCO, although practice isn't going too well at the moment. Later in the week, all three of us are taking part in a big community concert, which will be lovely.

Just watching the expert discussion on iplayer and all through Dobrinka Tabakova's comments on Max you can see me in the back ground increasingly frantically pointing DD's school friend out to her Blush. In my defence, it was becoming increasingly obvious that she really needs glasses!

TaggieOHara · 13/05/2018 23:30

green Flowers lovely to hear from you. Sorry that everything is still so tough

I’m looking forward to catching up with bbc young musician later in the week. Sounds like it was amazing!

LooseAtTheSeams · 14/05/2018 07:30

Green good to see your post, hope things are ok and Thanks to you!

We were in the same section as you Trumpetboysmum! We really enjoyed the event but had to cancel plans for dinner as it went longer than anticipated. First time we'd been to TV recording and we were impressed by how slick & professional it all was.

Trumpetboysmum · 14/05/2018 17:02

Littleladsdad it was really interesting watching how they put the recording together we had never been to anything like that before either . We did go out for dinner afterwards but didn't get home till gone 11 so are all really tired today !! I'm so pleased we went though Ds I knew would love it but it was lovely to see dd so into the piano music - she's normally much more into live theatre and will wriggle through all of ds's concerts !!

Japanese · 14/05/2018 18:15

We watched the piano performance only of the final. She was gob-smackingly good. Natalie Clein was wearing the same orange jumpsuit she wore on stage on Thursday at the southbank! (Sorry - have probably lowered the tone...!)

Trumpetboysmum · 14/05/2018 18:24

I liked th orange jumpsuit too I pointed it out to ds - don't think he was that interested though !!

TaggieOHara · 14/05/2018 18:44

Very envious of you all actually being there!

Druid - I bet Lauren is the type of superstar person who will get all A** and win a televised music competition in the same week!

raspberryrippleicecream · 14/05/2018 20:03

Our festival this year offered a couple of bursaries to help with courses, auditions etc. DS2 applied for help with his summer piano/organ course and found out today he has been awarded one. Yay. We were paying anyway, so his will definitely help.

Also, he played organ for a church service for the first time yesterday and got paid (very well).

raspberryrippleicecream · 14/05/2018 20:05

And good luck to DC with GCSEs/AS/A2s.

DD doesn't start until after half term

stringchild · 14/05/2018 20:07

Trumpet and Little - we were hovering over you on the first terrace 😀 it was really well done wasn’t it? Dd esp loved Sheku’s relaxed leg posture at one point which he v quickly corrected - dd reckoned his mom gave him a look 🤣

TabbyTigger · 14/05/2018 20:25

Well done raspberry!! That’s great news Smile

Kutik73 · 14/05/2018 20:30

So envious of those who were there (and sat behind Sheku or even spotted him being told off!?!).

Today I learnt the difference in sound between dominant and diminished chords (they may be too obvious for many of you, but not for me...). DS was practising a string orchestra piece and while playing he asked me if I could tell what chords he had just played. I had no clue what to say, then he gave me a hint saying, 'such as diminished, dominant, or...', so I picked dominant. It was actually diminished and he gave me a quick lecture so I could understand the difference between those two. He then started showing cadences which were totally out of my depth so no information was left in my brain. But it was quite nice that the boy who I used to change nappies could give me a lecture now!

Kutik73 · 14/05/2018 20:32

A big yay to raspberry's boy Star

String Grin
Great news Rasberry
And yes good luck to all of those about to take school exams !!

TaggieOHara · 14/05/2018 21:06

Lol kutik - I know just what you mean. My DSes were almost crying with laughter today at my (pathetic) attempts to work the TV, but it seems like yesterday that I was pushing them in a pram Smile

Huge congrats to not-so-mini Raspberry!

littleladsdad · 14/05/2018 21:16

Noticed him stretching out too stringchild, think your DD could be right! We've all been tired today too trumpet, even though we got back before 10:00.

CruCru · 14/05/2018 21:17

Gosh, your children are all so busy and accomplished. Yes, good luck to all sitting exams.

Kutik73 · 14/05/2018 21:35

Ah Taggie! This conversation goes back to feeling melancholic about them growing so fast!!!

Kutik73 · 15/05/2018 10:00

Just wondering how we are supposed to hear from ABRSM for the exam date? Email? I would like to have the date asap if pos... DS's schedule in June/July is filling very fast. I knew he would get really busy so it was not an ideal term to plan any exam really... He is missing the next NCO rehearsal due to a clash in his schedule (we are away). Hopefully no more clash there. Well, if it happens, then I just have to try moving things around. But as accompanist is involved it could be a nightmare. For someone who has done only piano exams, this accompanist requirement is quite stressful...

Japanese · 15/05/2018 10:40

kutik - I would expect to hear from ABRSM by the end of this week. I am also waiting to see if the date clashes with secondary school transition day...

Japanese · 15/05/2018 10:41

And you get an email telling you the date is ready but you need to log on to the site to see it
