Just to let you all know it starts this Friday with the Keyboard finalists.
Then the woodwind next time.

BBC4 7.30 pm.

If you have a budding young musician and you haven't seen the competition before, it can be very motivating for children and a must for older ones too, wanting to make music their career.

Yes, DS was mesmerised, commenting on the techniques they all showed. We thought all of them had standouts and midway I was convinced the lovely Bulgarian lad had got it. But there was more to come! Totally agree on winner's musicality - it was an astounding performance.

Musicmom1 · 24/04/2016 09:10

What a great category final - we too loved number 3 but actually we loved lots of them (and know nothing about percussion). Def the most entertaining of the finals so far.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 24/04/2016 09:16

I wish I could hear things like the musicality and presence that other people can - I always get either so amazed by the abilities of performers, or caught up in whether I like the piece or not, that I find it hard to judge the performance itself. I've been to concerts and people have commented about the soloists and what they've done with the pieces and how musical or not they were, etc, and I can't really distinguish between them. Probably why I've not got that far in my attempts to learn music!

Fleurdelise · 24/04/2016 20:13

I am slowly trying to catch up, seen the woodwind final fantastic, loved the recorder but the winner was my favourite.

I am hoping to catch up on the percussion by next Friday. Smile

LooseAtTheSeams · 01/05/2016 09:32

Anyone see the brass final on Friday? I wasn't surprised about the winner at all and loved their performance, although I thought another player was also in with a strong chance. It's shaping up for an incredible grand final. (My money is still on the percussionist at the moment.)
Looking forward to the strings and the Jazz final!

Musicmom1 · 01/05/2016 10:56

Loose - yes we saw it; loved the winner a lot. Really really like two others, but the other two were great as well. Can't wait for Strings - it is a really strong category final. And cellos too :)

Must be do hard to be a judge across different categories in the semi and final.

LooseAtTheSeams · 01/05/2016 11:43

Musicmom yes, ds2 made me check there will be cellos next week or he won't watch it! Smile I really don't envy the judges making the final decision.

raspberryrippleicecream · 01/05/2016 14:05

Our piano teacher is related to one of the cellist finalists, we are looking forward to it, but also behind on iPlayer at present.

Wafflenose · 01/05/2016 17:39

I loved it - Goo and I have managed to peg all the winners between us so far. I liked the winner last night, and one of the others. We're so enjoying it!

NewLife4Me · 03/05/2016 20:09

we have finally caught up with this now.
I had been saving brass as dd wasn't here friday and we hadn't seen percussion.
Dh caught up with woodwind and watched it with dd who had already seen it once.
He thought jess was a clear winner, so shows what i know. Grin

Wow!!!!!

Paulweller11 · 06/05/2016 21:33

OMG- the strings final!!!!
Amazing
Dd was excited to see a young cellist who she's watched on YouTube performing a piece she's learning to play with his violinist brother.
What talent!

NewLife4Me · 06/05/2016 21:57

We didn't watch tonight as had stuff to do, will maybe watch next weekend if we don't manage this week.
Sounds very good though Grin

Great strings final. Semi-final tomorrow!

LooseAtTheSeams · 07/05/2016 12:50

That was an incredible strings final! And this time I guessed wrong but I was delighted to be wrong as I loved the winner's performance. And in a rather off the point aside, it was nice to see a clip of Les Miserables sung in Welsh.
Ok, I give up, I can't work out who is likely to get through the semis, let alone win the whole thing, but I am looking forward to hearing them all again tonight.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 07/05/2016 19:09

Just watched it - I guessed wrong as well, and I thought I might have more chance of getting the string finalist! In fact I thought the winner was one of the less inspiring ones, for me, though of course they were all fantastic. I can appreciate the technique and ability much more in the strings that other instruments that I know less about.

Thought I'd better watch it before the semis!

NewLife4Me · 07/05/2016 19:23

We watched it at tea time and have caught up now.
I didn't have a favourite for strings, but thought the last girl was going to win it, so I was wrong as well Grin

Well, see you all later after semi

OP posts:
CrotchetQuaverMinim · 07/05/2016 19:35

yes that's who I thought as well!

NewLife4Me · 07/05/2016 21:31

I didn't get tonight at all tbh.
One of them missed a whole section out, made mistakes went for notes and missed and still got through.
I would have thought that that would have spelt the end, but it didn't.
They are all brilliant players though, I don't know how they do it.
It must be so hard with the cameras getting so close up.
The nerves must be terrible.
Looking forward to next week, I can't wait.

I think sometimes too much head movement needed to portray the music has something to do with it. some seem to be in it for the performance and not the music, is all I can think of. She was a huge head mover Grin But it must be hard for them.

LooseAtTheSeams · 07/05/2016 22:07

Well, oddly, the only one I was sure was going through tonight was the cellist even though I'd thought the violinist at the end of the strings final would go through to the semi! i think the judges are looking for great performers and two of the three finalists definitely were on the night, even though one of them said straightaway that they'd made mistakes.
However, they are all so good, I could imagine any three of the five going through. Really looking forward to the Jazz final and the grand final next week!

conkerpods · 07/05/2016 23:42

I haven't seen the strings yet.
I was a string semi finalist in it many years ago. The programme is a bit more glam now though. Plus they seem to show more of the performances which is good.

Wafflenose · 08/05/2016 01:34

I am catching up... I've stayed up until 1.30am to watch the strings final, after a very busy day. I hope to watch the semi final tomorrow.

Musicmom1 · 08/05/2016 08:45

Waffle - strings were amazing; semi was interesting - we guessed right but actually preferred one that wasn't on that list.

Yes the technical side of one was def outshone by the performance side (even I could hear the mussed notes and squeaks) - I pointed out to DD that was a useful lesson for festivals/platforms.......

Wafflenose · 08/05/2016 20:54

Goo and I guessed right too! I think the competitor you mentioned is exciting, enthusiastic and a breath of fresh air. It's a really great showcase for the instrument as well.

I just adore the strings winner.

Ferguson · 08/05/2016 21:26

In the semi-final, Jess was the stand-out one for me, and I would fully expect her to go on to win in the final - unless choice of repertoire lets her down.
