Just to let you all know it starts this Friday with the Keyboard finalists.
Then the woodwind next time.

BBC4 7.30 pm.

If you have a budding young musician and you haven't seen the competition before, it can be very motivating for children and a must for older ones too, wanting to make music their career.

Woops I seem to be on a different page to you all cause I actually loved the first pianist more, I thought the second was technically impressive but more detached from the band and less emotional. It's such a personal thing. Alexandra on trumpet showed in my opinion a lot of musicality and her pieces were great.
I am with Newlife in wanting bebop and more standards. I also agree with lack of improv and solos but impressed with some of the compositions.
And finally....where are the singers, percussionists and bassists!! Would love to see some vipraphone action!

drummersmum · 15/05/2016 11:40

ViBBBBBBBraphone

I think there were singers that didn't get through to the Final. I'd love to see some more. In fact, I'd like to see more jazz full stop. I suppose we're lucky to see any jazz at all, really!

This is BY FAR the best competition, so hopefully it will expand.

I suppose the whole point of improvisation is that it's just that: improvisation. So anything that's not composed in real time is not really improvisation, is it?

If I were in charge (wishful thinking) I'd give each of the competitors an unseen chord sequence to improvise over on their instrument, in real time, as part of the competition. That at least would test out their jazz skills.

NewLife4Me · 15/05/2016 12:58

Maybe as the competition grows there will be changes and progression from the current format.
My dd is currently working through her charlie Parker omnibook and reckons she'll be ready in a few years. I didn't want to put her down, but thought dream on kid Grin

I also wondered if a singer had done a really good ballad or a good scat like Cleo herself if they would have got through as what was being played was so different and considered as representative of Jazz.

They are all great musicians and I think they all have a bright future. I would also love to see category finals for the jazz one, including singing. There were some tantalising glimpses of drums, guitars and basses - and a singer - in the clips from the heats.

se22mother · 15/05/2016 20:47

Dd and I saw the final in the Barbican. All three finalists were amazing

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 15/05/2016 21:06

oh I thought it was live!

They are all impressive.

NewLife4Me · 15/05/2016 22:28

Right decision?
I won't say more for those who haven't caught up yet.
Result aside all 3 are very competent musicians, and i loved the head judge speech. She is so passionate about music.
Will come back for discussion.

I would have preferred either of the other two, to be honest! But I'm pretty sure I go against the grain on this. I've never been very good at listening for the right sort of thing - not sure I've picked any of the winners of any of it! People afterwards rave about one or the other of the finalists, category winners etc, and it almost all passes me by. I'm too swayed by whether I like the piece or not, and the performance aspect of it, and not very good at telling the musicality or the technique, which are obviously the more important things.

LooseAtTheSeams · 16/05/2016 09:39

I'm a bit like that - the first performance was excellent but I like the other pieces a lot more, so I'm not a good judge. I was getting swayed by the emotion, whereas I know the French horn player really did pull off an amazing performance.
The result was the one I was expecting but I do think all three have a brilliant future so in a way it didn't matter which one the judges picked! I loved their personalities as well.
Personally, what I got from this was a desire to hear more classical saxophone!

drummersmum · 16/05/2016 15:31

Head judge speech best thing ever. Mentioning the sea of mediocrity we live in (while BBCYM gets forever pushed to BBC4)...

That was the bit i liked too. Unfortunately the standard has been dumbed down so much due to x factor, BGT, The voice et al.
Joe public finds this entertaining and worst still has no concept of real musicianship or talent.
I blame The Beatles myself, having studied this sort of stuff for years, just for my own amusement. Grin

The winner wasn't my type of music at all, but to me the only one that could have been the winner due to the traditions of the competition and old school clasical music.

LooseAtTheSeams · 16/05/2016 15:58

i'm with you all the way on the terrible talent shows, except I like The Beatles! Grin
I'm also sad that we'll have to wait another two years for the next finals.

raspberryrippleicecream · 16/05/2016 17:58

The winner made the semifinals of BGT last year, in a group with their siblings!

It does seem sad it's only every 2 years.

Wafflenose · 16/05/2016 19:11

I really enjoyed it, and was right in my prediction. I loved the others too, especially the you-know-what.

NewLife4Me · 16/05/2016 19:15

Is there another competition that runs annually or are people just assuming it's annual when they report. I've not heard of anything similar.
have just been on another thread where it mentioned 2015 and read or hear it quite a lot.

OP posts:
Wafflenose · 16/05/2016 22:32

They start auditions during the 'odd' years. The whole process seems to take a long time, hence only once every two years. It would be nice to make it annual though.

absolutelynotfabulous · 17/05/2016 08:48

I'm intrigued as to how they manage to keep the whole thing secretSmile.

NewLife4Me · 17/05/2016 10:11

Of course that makes sense Waffle

I can remember now when dh met Alex Bone, he hadn't won the comp but was through the first round iirc. It was ages until the competition.

I'm not sure they do keep it secret tbh, I know nobody goes to the press or the press wouldn't publish, but friends, families, teachers, school staff will be aware.

I know this as dd went into school and told her hm who had won a particular heat and he said he'd known for 2 months Grin Bless her, she was trying to work out how it could have known as she thought it was live Grin

I thought both Sheku and Jess were outstanding in the final and communicated their performances so well to the audience too. 8 year old DS and I were both transfixed. Was also intrigued by Sheku's cello in the final as I don't know if others noticed but it definitely wasn't the same one that he played in the semi's but by god it was a beautiful instrument! Clearly a great deal older than his other other one which is a modern instrument made by Frank White and I can only assume he'd been lent it for the final but DS certainly had major cello envy over it!

LooseAtTheSeams · 17/05/2016 20:08

According to Guardian article it was loaned to him specially for the competition final! It did look and sound beautiful!

NewLife4Me · 17/05/2016 20:18

I'm so happy that jackie Chapman got the achievement award, he is a lovely lad and exactly the same non assuming lad we saw on the screen.
Dd was so pleased for him and I don't think his friends have stopped congratulating him.
He'll be back next time definitely.

OP posts:
Musicmom1 · 17/05/2016 20:38

Ah Newlife - that is good to hear - we so warmed to him both performing and not performing. He is def my tip for the future

Still haven't seen the final but maybe tonight! Will look out for the cello!
