how can I strengthen my abs whilst pregnant?

My tummy is still a disgrace after dd1 (2 years ago ) and I'd like to build a bit of strength in my abs to help my back and also I think it might help during labour.

I'm 5 weeks pregnant so I don't know if I should be doing the plank or other yoga ab postures.

I hate sit ups!

Anyone got any advice?

Pregnancy is not really the time for building/strengthening muscles, goals are usually maintenance focused during and immediately after pregnancy. However, you are safe to do just about all abdominal exercises until about 12 weeks pregnant, and from then on some modifications are called for (eg not flat on back, can use swiss ball etc).

Why not look into some antenatal pilates classes? Or an antinatal pilates DVD? APPI (Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute) has a good one that you can order online.

Thank you, am looking more for damage limitation rather than a six pack on top of the bump!

I do have a swiss ball, and I like the idea of the DVD - I'll have a look.
