What do you do about shin pain/ shin splints? How long to rest?

I have pains in my shins, someone said it's probably shin-splints which doesn't sound good... has anyone had this, what's the cure, do I have to rest or keep running, if rest, how long for?

Need to check it's defo shin splints not a pulled muscle. Probably the best stretch to check I found was to kneel up then sit back onto your heels. If this hurts then it is shin splints. You need to get your trainers checked to make sure it's not your gait that's causing it then stretch it often and ice it. You will probably be able to tell when you can run again and when you do make sure you stretch well before and after and stop when it starts to hurt. Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks anchovies, I did the sitting back on the heels bit and it doesn't particularly hurt so I don't think it is shin splints after all.

I guess it's just lots of stretching then...
