i need to run - can anyone help/make me?

this is prolly in the wrong topic...

i started running on the at the beginning of the year thanks entirely to the mumsnet runners. i posted some vague query about running and before i knew it i was kitted out with Properly Fitted Shoes and a c25k podcast and by june i was running 12k

i got out of routine over the summer and haven't been out since. there were a couple of occasions while i was running when i think it got me over quite a big emotional hump, and frankly without it i'm struggling. next step meds. everyone is asking, with meaningful looks, when i'm going to start running again. and i'm trapped in the start of the spiral where i have no motivation to get out, so i don't get the mood boost, so i have no motivation...

is there anyone up for a virtual running buddy? or any really good motivational typers? if anyone can help me take those first steps outside the door it might just help me dodge the bullet that's heading my way...

thanks

Stake, yesterday I ran a half marathon, in the rain, with thousands of other people, some of whom barely had any shoes on. Some people couldn't afford to enter but ran along side anyway, without a number. People talked to each other, people who wouldn't normally talk to each other, people encouraged others on. There were people in clapped out, handmade wheelchairs, sometimes in pairs. The whole thing was amazing and taking part felt remarkable. As dh said, there were people there of all different shapes and sizes, most running, some walking, but all participating.

Slightly over a year ago I started running for the first time ever. I have now run in two half marathons and am addicted to the whole experience that running brings.

You are already a runner. You can run 12k which is amazing. Go outside and do a 5k run and I promise once you take the first few steps you will be back in your stride...

Oi SOH get your name down for that 10k, no more excuses.

IControlSandwichMonkey · 26/10/2009 17:25

TMAM, I can't run 10k, the dog ate my homework.

Themasterandmargaritas · 26/10/2009 17:30

oh yes you can do it baby.

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 26/10/2009 17:37

bless you all am okay, just a bit of a dip, will get over it.

lovely story master, you're somewhere hot aren't you? (i was briefly on the runners thread when i was millenniumfalcon) i can't imagine running even 5k in the heat - much respect.

dp is a flippin angel and went to the running shop to get me some tights. i remember being equally freaked at the prospect of wearing shorts in the summer but i go so fast noone will ever see anyway

dp said he didn't want to put any pressure on me to go out but wanted me to feel i could go if i wanted. luckily i have you lot to put the pressure on for him....

thanks all, it is very very much appreciated.

Well stake I will be going out tomorrow at about 5.40. Doing approx 5 miles. Fancy joining me?

IControlSandwichMonkey · 26/10/2009 17:46

I wear tights for running. I love them. I probably look like a sack of potatoes under an ill-fitting tarp but it's comfortable. And VERY short shorts in the summer.

TMAM, lovely gingerbread thanks, but I will be needing more motivation. Perhaps your best school ma'am voice.

Probably shouldn't be dragging my inappropriate fetish round MN should I?

I will be running first thing tomorrow.

Themasterandmargaritas · 26/10/2009 17:47

Oh yes stake I remember you, you were doing brilliantly.

Go with Orm tomorrow, do it. It'll be a lovely sunny autumnal morning Her routes are always lovely.

IControlSandwichMonkey · 26/10/2009 17:50
Themasterandmargaritas · 26/10/2009 17:54

Frankly I'm sure no one on MN would be surprised at your fetishes SOH.

Now listen here young lady. You promised me a 10k a couple of months ago. If you don't do it then there shall be no marriage. Nope. I shall call it off.

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 26/10/2009 17:56

will go tomorrow, about 7ish. usual 5k route but i'll take walking breaks if i feel i need to.

or do i need to worry about starting more slowly? haven't run since beginning of summer holidays so 3 months.

5k sounds good, do it, walk if/when you feel like it, don't feel bad about walking if you want to. I bet you will feel good on your return.

Then come back to us on the running thread

IControlSandwichMonkey · 26/10/2009 18:02

I think listen to your body, start easy and do only what's comfortable. You may surprise yourself.

Ooh TMAM, it's like a virtual kink meme.

But no wedding? Argh. I'm running. Round and round the room. There must be a wedding. I need to dance inappropriately and Be Embarrassing.

snice · 26/10/2009 19:19

I did it! Couldn't not go as I would have felt too guilty not to post (DP said "why can't you just lie and pretend you went":he is clearly a man of few principles)

AND .....it wasn't that bad really. I did a few minutes brisk walking to warm up and then amazed myself by running for 16 mins without stopping or slowing down.

So stake a big thank you from me for the motivation-I'll be going again on Wed

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 26/10/2009 21:30

yay snice and snice's dp :P

i went 5k and only walked one song's worth. but one of my favourite songs came on at the end so i went too fast then and will regret it tomorrow. was a bit of a slog up to that last bit but i was all buzzy after.

thanks everyone

Well done Stake good for you.

And you too snice.

Now all we need is for SOH to sign up for a 10k and then we shall all be happy.

snice · 27/10/2009 19:01

Nice one stake. I know what you mean about favourite tracks -I've got an old clubmix on the mp3 and when certain bits come on I'm transported back to 3am in a sweaty nightclub in 1993 and start speeding up beyond my running capabilities.

MonstrousMerryHenry · 27/10/2009 22:08

Hurrah!!! Good on yer, girl!

[proud of you emoticon]

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 28/10/2009 09:25

bonfirewithaheartofgold · 06/11/2009 19:20

jut wanted to update this and thank everyone who posted on it. you got me out there. how are you all doing? still going?

have been going every other day(ish) and the running's getting better - managed my first 5k without walking yesterday. unfortunately it doesn't seem to be helping my head as much as i hoped, but at the very least it's half an hour in the day when i can get away from everything, so that's good.

cheers all, am once again amazed (not to say alarmed!) at power of mumsnet runners.
