6 weeks to fitness?

Can I get fit in 6 weeks? I’m doing a charity event which involves walking 40 miles over 2 days. I’ve had a pretty stressful few months and exercise has fallen by the wayside. It’s fairly steep walking lots of ups and downs. For those in the know what’s the best way to get fit quick.

You can definitely get fitter in 6 weeks but it's definitely a case of more haste less speed - getting injured or just worn out is a real risk if you push too hard. It's far better to arrive at the start line undertrained but healthy. How far can you walk at the moment? Increasing that distance steadily will give you the best chance of finishing.

Recovery, sleep and nutrition will help you make progress. Stretching and some light strength training will help your body cope better with the stresses of training and your event.

Don't forget to plan and practice things like gear, footwear, hydration and nutrition for the event itself as that can derail anyone.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure how far I can walk, went out the other day and did 8 miles. I didn’t have time to go any further, I could feel it in my legs the next day.

8 miles isn't bad. Rest and recover well, and when you go out next time you should find you're a bit stronger and can go further.
