What kit do I need for an 18km hike?

I’ve never done one before but I am fit and healthy, do loads of exercise every day and love walking so I really want to do this, but I don’t know what to wear? Obviously I will need to buy some hiking shoes/boots but what else? Can I wear my usual leggings, T-shirt and hoodie? I have a waterproof coat and a backpack. I’m guessing I should wear layers so that I can add/remove as needed? Any other advice?

Love this! Glad it went well. I used to walk in walking trousers but switched to gym leggings years ago and haven’t looked back. If you get really into it, merino base layers are the way forward and you can pick up second hand ones on eBay and Vinted for a good price. I never bother with two pairs of socks - I just have comfortable thicker socks I know work with my boots/trail shoes. In future, gaiters could be a good option if you know it’s going to be muddy but on the other hand, mud washes out easily. Personally I usually take walking poles to the Downs in the winter - they help a little with downhill but are really handy when it’s muddy to provide some more stability. But it’s not essential.
