Swimming for weight loss

Has anyone ever lost weight just swimming several times a week?

How long did you swim for, intensity, etc? Unfortunately there are no Aqua classes on except for 11am when I’m at work.

I am having some joint and back issues and have been told to swim more.

It’s good for cardiovascular fitness and toning muscles, but weight loss really is mostly diet I’m afraid. A 30 minute, constant moderately paced, swim will only burn the equivalent of 2 slices of bread.
You can actually lose weight doing zero exercise at all if you reduce calories, but exercise is good for MH, fitness etc.

We swim twice a week and do Aqua Fit on a Tuesday night. I've toned up for sure and my arms are slimmer. Any exercise will help with weightloss. I've gone from 6 lengths to 15 in 3 weeks. My goal is 60 lengths by Christmas (a mile).

Any exercise is better than none and so do it as advised. But agree weight loss is mainly achieved through diet.

If I swim more I lose weight but that's high intensity (3000m/120 lengths an hour)

If you're not swimming at high intensity you might find swimming makes you ravenous as it drops the body temperature which doesn't help if you're trying to lose weight

You can’t run or out swim a bad diet sadly but any exercise as long as you don’t eat back the calories will help.

As others have said weight is more down to diet. But a) you can't eat while exercising! and b) I find a regular programme of exercise puts me in a more healthy mindset and I don't want to undo hard work by eating rubbish

I’ve swam consistently for a few years now 2-4 times a week and it makes naff all difference to weight loss. I can tell the difference around my arms but that’s all.

When I was seriously swimming 6 days a week I didn’t really lose any weight but I did drop cms and I was bloody strong. You need to swim at a decent pace and pretty continuously ie not a break after every length and you need to rise your heart rate.

Swimming won't cause weight loss.
If you swim a lot at a decent pace (enough to raise your heart rate) you should get more toned.

Swimming will make you feel better in yourself in terms of fitness. But you’d have to be doing an awful lot for you to loose much weight purely by swimming. If you want to loose weight too you’ll have to reduce your calorie intake.

I like swimming but I lost 5st counting calories and walking 5 miles a day. I’ve started running now as I got fitter but walking has been absolute godsend, and free ☺️

Swimming was great for a back pain and fab for joints, you feel weightless but yet you’re building muscle and toning it’s a win win! However, exercise alone won’t aid weight loss as such it goes hand in hand with diet so think of a plan of what your priorities are but deffo give it a try
