Weighted vests for walking

Has anyone used a weighted vest for walking? How have you found it?

Do you have any recommendations for a particular make/type?

@Notexactlyasplanned Maybe we need to just talk to each other?! Have you done much research into this? I was hoping to make use of the Prime Day deals, so hoping to make a decision by the end of the week. I’m just not sure what weight to go for.

I’ve never heard of this but sounds like a clever idea.

Itsholly · 09/07/2025 11:52

I got one from Aldi I this its 6kg. Had it four months and used it twice. Only in the garden while mowing the grass so about 30 minutes per time.

i keep forgetting to wear it on an actual walk. It does strain my back a bit. I really thought I would use it more than I actually have.

Alaja · 09/07/2025 11:54

I’ve been wearing a one on walks, trying to build back up my fitness, it’s just a cheap one from Amazon but I’ve found my posture is improving (I have quite rounded shoulders and a slouched posture)

Kelvinator1 · 09/07/2025 12:41

I end up a hot sweaty mess under mine, don't use as much as I thought I would

Magnolia82 · 09/07/2025 14:44

Thank you, everyone for all the feedback. It seems like there’s a mix of positive and negative experiences.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a weighted vest from Amazon? I’m wondering about one of the adjustable ones, so that I can gradually increase the weight.

I got a 15kg one…. It’s great in the winter but too hot and sweaty in the summer.

HelenHywater · 09/07/2025 20:12

I was thinking about getting one too. I assume it means you burn off additional calories? what other benefits does it have?

Magnolia82 · 10/07/2025 08:11

Thank you, everyone.

Would love to hear anymore feedback (positive or negative) or recommendations for a good weighted vest on Amazon (so I can make use of Prime Day before tomorrow!).

I'm interested too.

I found that rucking with a bag suited me better. So I just put some heavy stuff in my long rucksack and head uphill.

If you already have a good rucksack it's worth trying this first.

FourLove · 10/07/2025 08:27

Can’t help you I’m afraid; my body has a built in weighted vest.

Tessasanderson · 11/07/2025 16:01

I used one for a while last year and plan to start again. Really really easy way of increasing your cardio and strength without actually doing much. I bought an adjustable one because it gets used in my gym too. Mine goes all the way upto 30kg... Its from Mirafit and it wasnt cheap. Adjustable in 1kg jumps.

I basically went up each walk in 1 kg jumps from 10-20kg over a period of time. 20kg is a LOT but its what i lost in weight before using the vest and it was a amzing boost to know i used to weigh the same with the weight vest on.

I have a couple of dogs and would walk early on a morning with them for about 3-4km and i even measured the change it brought in my heart rate alone which was at least 10bpm average.

Only real downsides were it was really difficult to get on when it weighed 20kg and i looked like a suicide bomber if i didnt cover it up and then it was very hot to wear.

I think there is a huge market for people who dont necessarily want to run but want to lose weight walking with weighted vests. Its pretty intense.

mummybearSW19 · 11/07/2025 16:08

What did you choose?

Magnolia82 · 11/07/2025 16:35

Thanks, all. I’m currently trying to decide whether to ‘checkout’ on Amazon or not! I’m considering the Zelus make that is adjustable between 5kg and 9kg. I’m quite petite (5ft2 and around 8st7) so think this might be a good weight? I’ve still got a few hours before Prime Day sale ends, so I think I’ll wait until this evening to make my final decision.

Ah yes this ^

Fill your rucksack with bottles of water and either drink them or empty them if it gets too much 😁

I'm 5ft 5 & have a 6kg vest (and has plates u can add to increase to 10kg).

6kg on a hour walk is enough for me because of the pressure on my shoulders. Its bearable but i defo notice it (plus the sweat per my previous post!!)

coffeeagogo · 20/07/2025 09:51

I have bought a 10kg weighted vest and have been walking daily with it for about 2 weeks. First walk I was like WTF! But it has got easier. It is very hot though. I wish I had bought and adjustable one now - this is the one I got: https://www.amazon.co.uk/your-orders/pop?ref=ppx_yo2ov_mob_b_pop&orderId=203-3099341-6662763&lineItemId=ngrkqsnumjotooy&shipmentId=UwnzRMsZW&packageId=1&asin=B08D8WPT85

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/07/2025 10:10

I was just thinking this morning I should use mine as not really worn it since the weather has got warmer. I was wearing it under my coat in winter.

Buiderswoe · 22/07/2025 20:20

Are they washable? I’ve always wondered. I feel I like I would sweat quite quickly so would need to be able to wash it every time.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 24/02/2026 08:41

@Magnolia82 I’m having the same dilemma as you, I have a big hike in June and thought a weighted vest might help my training. Did you buy one in the end?

Itsholly · 11/03/2026 19:32

Had mine a year and used less than a handful of times.
