Simple dumbells

smallzoo99 · 02/07/2025 11:57

I am 67, quite fit for my age and still able at the moment to build muscle even when gardening...

I work from home on a laptop and I am looking for a simple set of dumbells I can use to build my arms and shoulders up during the day when I take a break from staring at the screen

There is a vast variety out there so just some ideas for the best budget ones

Also , I dont know what weight to start with , I am reasonably strong fro my age with no aches or pains lol

thanks

At the lighter end, I don't think it greatly matters. I like the feel of the neoprene covered weights upto about 6kg. Beyond that, the handles start getting too chunky for my small hands and a slimmer metal is easier to hold.

Mine are mainly from Argos and Decathlon.

These are good as you can adjust weight for different exercises. Decent value too. https://amzn.eu/d/iuAD52P

Can you do a gym trial day or physically go to a Decathlon to try some?

when I first started for arms I’d be doing 5kg chest press and 2-3kg lateral raises. After 2 hrs at gym I’ve now doubled that.

I’d go for adjustable ones as well - you can get some which go up to 20kgs on Amazon and other places, and they are space saving. I’ve got a variety of pairs of weights from 1kg to 10kg and a barbell which goes to 20kg which I accumulated over time and they take up masses of room. If I was starting again I’d definitely just have an adjustable set.

If you're reasonably strong, yes don't bother with 1-2 kilos, will do nothing. I echo the suggestion to go to a store and try the various weights to figure out what you need, difficult to simply guess.
