Stopped loosing weight going back to the gym

I didn't gym for 6 weeks due to surgery, just light walking and i was loosing weight.

Now i'm back at the gym and i've actually gained weight and it's harder to drop off than it was when i didn't go. When I wasn't going I was easily loosing 1lb and a half a week. But now I'm 4lbs heavier after a few weeks back at the gym, same diet. How is this possible? Very frustrating.

Muscle gain?

If your muscles are tired, they hold water retention. It's not true muscle mass but it is part of their recovery and building process.

Muscles swell with water, so youll probably put on a lb or so just from that. If you're taking things like creatine, this will exacerbate this 'issue'.

Your muscles are also likely to have atrophied a bit from lack of exercise. Now they're being re-utilised, they need more energy, protein, etc. Think of it like leaving a car in the garage... you don't need fuel, snacks, picnic basket, spare tyre, etc, while it's parked, but the second you decide to use it, all that stuff gets restocked and your 'car' naturally gets heavier.

It's a good thing :)
