If so, do you feel absolutely exhausted and drained after? I have not eaten breakfast for several years. Sometimes I feel good after a workout and sometimes I feel horrendous!

I don't eat breakfast and yes, I exercise in the morning.
I don't feel exhausted afterwards unless it's a very long run (like 2hrs plus). I think my body has adapted over the years.

TheOliveFinch · 31/03/2025 17:21

I don’t eat before midday and often exercise in the morning it doesn’t cause me any problems, I don’t run but often do quite strenuous cardio

granhands1 · 31/03/2025 18:13

I don’t eat before lunch and prefer to exercise in the morning, if I am doing something very strenuous that makes me sweat a lot I have an electrolyte drink and then I feel ok

Andtheworldwentwhite · 31/03/2025 19:12

If I’m not going to the gym for 6am it really isn’t happening. I am a morning person so I am awake anyway. And I don’t really function after 6pm. I don’t normally eat before I go but if I do I eat a banana.

Titasaducksarse · 31/03/2025 19:13

I usually do a fasting workout as if I don't go first thing work takes over. However I did a weight session 6pm recently and I lifted 5 to 10kg heavier on everything!

Truetoself · 01/04/2025 16:03

Thanks for the input! Must just be me then!

I swim at 6.30,so no food before, but I drink a pint of hot water, as soon as I get up. Could you be dehydrated?
Edited to day I always feel at my best on early swim days.

LittleBigHead · 01/04/2025 18:51

I exercise in the morning and pretty much always eat breakfast. I tend not to eat supper, or anything much after 5pm.

greengreyblue · 01/04/2025 18:53

I don’t eat until 12pm. I don’t regularly exercise in the morning apart from a dog walk at the weekend. I normally feel sharper. Maybe change your routine. I’d rather have longer in bed! 😉

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 01/04/2025 19:01

OP I used to IF until recently and always exercise in the morning. I always felt fine but....

I then read a book called Next Level by Stacy Sims, an endurance athlete and nutrition scientist, and The Female Body Bible, by a group of sports scientists. They both suggest that a lot of the data around IF derive from studies on essentially sedentary populations / people who only do light exercise like walking. They also say these studies don't properly focus on women's nutritional needs, and that women have a much shorter "energy availability window" meaning we need to eat closer to exercise for optimal performance.

Based on that, I stopped finishing eating at 4pm and now have a light dinner around 6pm. I also make energy balls and eat them right after a gym session.

I didn't think I felt bad before but I have to say I feel much better and more consistent in my gym performance since eating like this - more "snap" when I jump, feeling more comfortable with SMRs etc.

Truetoself · 01/04/2025 22:16

Interesting idea @JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff. I am in such a good routine and if I am to exercise, it needs to be in the morning as I am exhausted after work

No weekday breakfast for about 40 years

regular gym goer in the mornings

LadeOde · 01/04/2025 22:22

Have always exercised first thing and don't eat breakfast. I feel great afterwards and drink a litre of water. On the odd day if i miss (appointment or whatever) i feel crap all day.

EmmaStone · 01/04/2025 22:35

I skip breakfast most days, but if I’ve exercised in the morning, I eat when I get in, I definitely can feel a need for food.

TheChosenTwo · 01/04/2025 22:46

I don’t eat before 1pm most days (sometimes if dh does a Sunday brunch it will be 11:30am). Not a self imposed restriction, just not hungry until then.
I exercise fasted in the morning, a couple of swims and a spin throughout the week.
Feel fine but I’ve always done it.

PollyIndia · 02/04/2025 13:47

I was exercising fasted, but then also read Stacey sims on fasted training for women, and as I've hit peri-menopause, I've started eating first. So this am I had yoghurt, fruit and seeds at 730 before calisthenics at 815. Id rather not eat first, I don't feel hungry. Just conscious of cortisol levels and not wanting to mess up my hormones (seeing as they are already messed up in peri!). But I'd be interested in hearing more about whether she's right from other people who know. Everything I've read backing up her position seems to end up back at her book or insta!

AzurePanda · 02/04/2025 13:52

I do and I worry about it. Never eat until around 1230pm, cycle 10k and do weights /resistance for 25 minutes 7 days a week. I can’t see a way around it as I want to shower after I exercise and the only thing that works in controlling my weight is to skip breakfast.

I feel fine but I worry it’s not the most effective time to exercise in terms of burning calories.

unsync · 02/04/2025 14:16

Since doing weights, I have to eat breakfast before or it's a struggle. I also aim to eat lunch no more than 45 mins after finishing.

SpectatorInLife · 02/04/2025 16:49

I swim 2k hard in the mornings, although not particularly early. I have to fuel before I go, otherwise I feel very weak in the water and my rep times are noticeably slow.
I have a small piece of cheese, a boiled egg and a coffee with cream before I go, at about 8am. I eat nothing after 4pm. I cook for my kids and sit with them to make it a 'family meal' but don't actually eat anything...

Gymmum82 · 02/04/2025 16:50

I exercise most mornings and often don’t eat breakfast. I’ve never found it an issue

Mathsbabe · 03/04/2025 16:59

I don’t eat breakfast and go to the gym five or six mornings a week. I feel great at the gym and afterwards. I mostly do between 2 and 3 hours exercise and try and get a sauna in.
im not starving when I get home somewhere between 12 and 2pm but really enjoy my yogurt and fruit.

SerenaSemolena · 03/04/2025 18:35

I don't think it helps for strength and endurance to not eat, but I really dislike the feeling of exercise with food in my stomach and can't do it.

I figure if my body is desperate enough for calories, it could eat some of the fat hanging over my sports bra.

Hasn't happened yet, though. 🙂

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/04/2025 18:37

I exercise with weights every morning fasted and don’t eat until lunch. I have no desire to force food down on one person’s say-so - I figure if it was so essential my body would tell me I needed food at that time and it just doesn’t. I suppose this might change over time (I’m mid-40s now) but I’m happy doing it my way.

thismummydrinksgin · 03/04/2025 18:46

I couldn’t If and exercise in the morning. One reason reason I can’t IF as that’s when I like to exercise

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/04/2025 20:24

You don’t have to fast in the morning if you do If. You can have breakfast and lunch instead of lunch and dinner.
