I need some new gym trainers...

...and wonder where people go to buy them these days? Are there any high street stores that actually sell trainers that are designed for the gym as opposed to places like JD Sports that sell trainers for fashion/comfort?

I'm looking for something mainly to be used indoors and a mix of lifting and hyrox type stuff (so the ability to be comfortable for a short run too).

Or do people just order on line now and send back if not comfortable?!

Nike metcons are good. I got mine from sports direct.

Seconding nike metcons

Another vote for metcons. I'm on my third pair. I got mine in the Nike outlet but stock is hit or miss.

Thanks everyone, seems the Metcons are a popular choice! I think I'll order a pair of the metcon 9s and also the metcon 6 free and see which ones feel better for a little bit of running in (round the house of course so I can send the other pair back!)

Metcons are a poor running trainer. They havent got much cushioning on the heel and from what ive read they are very compromised for running.

From a metcon wearing gym goer. I just dont run at the gym

Thank you! Can I ask which metcons you wear - the 'free' or the normal ones?

I assume normal. They are Nike Metcon 9's.

From what i read when i was purchasing them they have an emphasis on a wider, firmer heel for when lifting weights to add stability. This is fine for people just doing a bit of jogging on a treadmill from time to time or just general gym use but a little bit of a issue if you are using them primarily as a running trainer.

I dont run so i dont see any issues and the wider heel section does help with lifting.

Thank you, that's really helpful 😀

I got my metcons on the Next website, they were a good price. I like them for lifting although for running I also have other running shoes.

byteme1011 · 20/11/2024 23:40

For running go a gait analysis store and get recommendations (dont have to buy from them) - I've done a hyrox in my running trainers before! but use my metcons for crossfit

FriendofDorothy · 29/04/2025 22:25

Can anyone tell me the difference between the Metcon 6 and the Metcon 9?

everycowandagain · 30/04/2025 06:53

@FriendofDorothy I think the 6 is lighter, the 9 is a great lifting shoe, very stable and quite rigid. I have (several pairs of) 9's.

OK so I need new gym trainers, I don't do much cardio - a little walking on a treadmill and some rowing but definitely no running. i mainly lift heavy weights,

Would you recommend the 9's for this? Any recommendations on where to buy from and what is sizing like?

everycowandagain · 30/04/2025 14:57

@FriendofDorothy I wear them for my bench/upper body days. I use a bare foot style shoe for squats and deadlifts (Avancus) but I sometimes switch back to metcons afterwards for my accessories because I find the additional stability helpful for single leg work.

I have had several pairs from the Next website, they often have them at a good price if you don't need a wide range of colours to choose from!

everycowandagain · 30/04/2025 14:58

Oh and I think they are pretty true to size.
