C25K to Christmas

UniverseRewardsTheBrave · 11/10/2024 19:14

Just wondering if anyone else is starting the C25K and would like a motivation thread?

I've done it successfully once before (during covid then stopped) and have a couple of failed attempts, but I'm the sort of person who does well with deadlines so would like to try to complete it before Christmas.

I'm NOT a natural runner - or a natural at anything sporty - so fully prepared to hate every minute of it and would love a motivation buddy or two!

@SevernWonders how's it going this week? How are you getting on?

Ashamed to say I only got out a run today since NY day but it was 5k and I'm happy with it. 42 mins and I did have to walk on and off for a bit around the 3K mark as I got a stitch on my side.

The weather was perfect today, not too warm or cold, not windy either!

Hope everyone is doing OK.

SevernWonders · 15/01/2025 17:56

Thanks Scoop, I can only dream of where you are now...but one day hopefully.

Week 3 done and started week 4 last night. Can't actually believe that I ran, well jogged, 5 minutes non stop.

So glad I found this thread and everyone's inspiration as I'd never have started.

Giraff3 · 15/01/2025 19:16

Hey! I have 1 run left to complete before i graduate. Had car issues and snow & ice. So yesturday was my first run since NYE. I thought id lost progress in that time, but hadnt, i ran the full 30 .ins without stopping. So run 3 of week 9 will be tomoz (thursday)
Then saturday im going to attempt to run 5k and see how long it takes, coz i recon it will be 50/55mins. So il update you all saturday to confirm graduation and how long it actually takes me to run 5k lol

Happy running everyone and welcome to the newbies.....youve got this 🙌

scoopoftheday · 16/01/2025 09:58

Well done @SevernWonders!

Running 5 full minutes was one of the best early milestones I remember!

I remember the first run with my friend, neither of us could really manage the full minute of running the first week and we were breathless. Looking forward to hearing how the rest of the week goes.

@Giraff3 the weather had been stinking here too, frost then snow then that wet slush. I am in the arse end of nowhere and the wee side roads were still frozen when the others weren't!

All the best for Saturday! It'll take as long as it takes 😉 don't pressure yourself - can you actually believe you can run 5k? 😁😁 every time I do it I'm like.. damn... am I a runner? I'm a runner!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Giraff3 · 21/01/2025 21:14

Evening all

@scoopoftheday @lechatnoir i did it 💪 i graduated on 18th january whoop whoop.

Tonight i ran until i got to 3.1 mile (5k). It took me 53 minutes 😂 told you im a slow runner lol

My aim now is to bring it down to 40 mins. So reduce by 13 mins. Im now going to try and aim to knock as much off by 1st march. So 6 weeks to chip away.

How is everyone getting on??

scoopoftheday · 22/01/2025 00:32

Well done @Giraff3 I'm delighted for you!!

Doesn't it feel class to be able to run 5k?!

Never worry about the time unless you're wanting to enter races, I'm chuffed for you!

We're abroad at the minute and I went out yesterday morning and did 5k. Then I walked back the same route... it took me 42.3 mins to run the 5k.... and 43 mins to walk back... so that gives you an idea of how fast I run 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

How's everyone else doing?

SevernWonders · 25/01/2025 19:35

So I'm still plodding (literally) onwards, just completed Week 5 with the mega 20 minute run.

I didn't actually intend to do it, I went to scroll backwards to w5r2 and repeat but my fat fingers opened run 3 so I thought I would try and get to 10 and see what happened and then just kept going. Couldn't believe I did it, albeit still very slowly at 5kph(!!!) on my walking pad.

scoopoftheday · 26/01/2025 02:35

Well done @SevernWonders I think a lot of us found that jump to 20 mins the hardest one of them all!

Don't worry about speed 😊

scoopoftheday · 06/02/2025 14:34

Hi everyone ☺️

How's everyone getting on?

I'm still trying to keep up the 5k about twice a week.

Today I had my first ever unsolicited advice from a man when running.

I shouldn't have slowed down but he had two dogs which were making their way towards me so I removed an earphone to hear what he was saying...

Basically I should "keep at it" and I am "running well" and that he used to run marathons and I should just go from gate post to pillar and take it steady... I said I can run 5k, I don't want to run more and went to move off... he told me he'd saw me run before and felt I had lost weight from last time he saw me.

Now, I live in the country, as it happens, I have seen this man before when I was walking my own dog, but imagine if I was a younger woman, and it wasn't the middle of the day and I was confident - why do some men think it's ok to do this?

I won't stop again (he added time to my run)

Giraff3 · 06/02/2025 18:06

hey @scoopoftheday good to hear from you!

Thats fab your still keeping it up with at least 2 runs a week.
Everyone feels they are an expert these days in person. I just smile and nod.
But to comment on weight, yeah that not nice and a bit creepy lol although id be elaited if someone noticed me being slimmer as the weeks passed lol
What im only just learning is you have to run slower and longer to increase your 5k time. Not run like a bat outta hell speed , like majority of people thought lol

Im still at it. I have my gait analysis booked for tomorrow (friday) So im interested to see what trainers are best suited, as im still running in my £6 reebok pair i got brand new off vinted last year lol.

Im still doing tues, thurs, sat runs

Tuesday 5k slow run
Thurs 30 min, switching between fast run and slow in the session
Saturday increasing half a mile each saturday untill i get to 6 miles. So this saturday i will do 3.6 miles. Not bothered on time , just going for distance.

Im aiming to do a 10k local race mid sept (not told anyone as yet) its in a forest, so should be nice)

scoopoftheday · 09/02/2025 09:54

Oh @Giraff3 that's brilliant!

Firest run sounds great!

How'd the gait analysis go? Let us know if you think it's worth doing!

So glad you're still running. I don't feel any 5k is easier than the last one 🙈🙈🙈

@SevernWonders how are you getting on?

Giraff3 · 09/02/2025 11:16

Morning @scoopoftheday

The gait analysis was done in 15 min.
They put my feet on a measuring board to check sizing. Then put me in a pair of "neautral" running shoe, then i got on their treadmill to run for 1 minute whilst the camera filmed my lower legs. I got off the treadmill and watched the replay thats slowed down and i can see why i get pain in my left calf........im a overpronator. So i need shoes with support/stability due to my ankle roll when i land. You dont see it in real time to the eye as such.

When ive come home i googled best shoes for this category and its either brooks adrenaline gts 24 or asics gel kayono 31. So im going to a some shops on monday to shop around and try on.

scoopoftheday · 09/02/2025 18:56

That's great!

Hopefully you'll get the right trainers for you.

My sister wears Brooks and Hoka and loves them.

scoopoftheday · 25/02/2025 20:27

How's everyone doing?

Giraff3 · 26/02/2025 20:41

Hey @scoopoftheday

Im doing ok. Still plodding on, Its my birthday this sunday.......hoping for some running goodies 😇😀
Still not ran outside...

How r u getting on? Xx

scoopoftheday · 28/02/2025 23:47

Happy birthday for Sunday!

I'm still plodding! I try and do 5k a time or two a week. Though it started hailstoning on Wednesday morning so I only managed 4k as I was freezing.

I've a pain in my hip and it's getting worse. Have a physio appt on Tuesday so hopefully I'll get some stretches to do to help.

Did you get new runners? Or is that what you're hoping for on Sunday?

Giraff3 · 12/03/2025 10:53

hey @scoopoftheday

Sorry for the delay. I went abroad for my birthday and got back at the weekend. It was great to have some sun on my bones. Lol

I got a running vest, 2 x bottles pouch thingies for the front and a bladder for the back. ( il use it for my hiking and out door running) bladder for hikes and bottles for running.
Some cash towards running shoes and a running long sleeve base layer. No shoes as yet. Had to go into a city for my passport and went into another running shop to try some ascic kayno and they reckon i should buy size 7, even though trainers on me i buy size 6.......they remeasured me when i had just done 8k steps. So feet were at full capacity swelling i guess. They say running shoes are different size wise compared to everyday fashion trainers

Im looking at 30 and 31 model in ice blue/sliver or very light pink but eaither there sold out at £140 or there in stock for £180. So im waiting till i can get them for about £145.

I hadnt run for 2 x weeks until last night. I dont know how i did it, but i ran for a full 30 mins and did 2 miles (slow jog) was very happy i hadnt lost too much fitness.

Re: hip pain, i get this, so ive started doing pigeon pose , open and shut the gate and leg swings (forward/back) and side to side.
Ive also read this week, take vitamin D if you get joint/ bone ache) so il start that.

Have you had your appointment yet? Let me know what they suggests

Thankyou for checking in xx

scoopoftheday · 16/03/2025 09:36

Hi @Giraff3 , sorry I'm only seeing this now. I forgot to check back!!

I must look up those shoes for a nosey!

I had my physio appt and she reckons its coming from my sacroiliac ligament and did some stretching as well as some electric thing (I was in too much pain from the previous pushing she was doing to ask for clarification..

I haven't felt any difference but tbh the mechanics of my back is never good due to scoliosis. I will try that pigeon stretch though, thank you!

I went out on Friday lunch time for another 5k was didn't enjoy it, but think I beat my last time. Not that I was running for time, just running to do it.

You're doing so well, imagine running for 30 mins, I bet there was a time you'd never ever have imagined that!

Weather is beautiful here today, was going to go out when I woke up but I was starving so made breakfast and now the dog is comfy on my knee...
