Sore knee after hiking rest or carry on?

Did a 40 mile hike last week over 2 days and since then have been getting knee pain.
Feels more at the front of it.

I took a few days off exercise but went back to the gym yesterday and today.

Not had this kind of pain before seems to get worse if I'm sitting down for a long time and felt stiff after getting up in work (I have a desk based role).

Not sure if rest is best option or other exercise?
I wanted to do another long walk this weekend (around 12 miles) but not sure if that will make it worse?

Anyone had similar?

I wouldnt do any long walks until the problem has resolved if it was me.
I have dodgy knees and arthritis in my hip so get stiff if I sit too long but also get more pain if I do too much at once. Because my knees and hip hurt most of the time the question I always ask myself is 'does it hurt more if I run/cycle/etc?'....if the answer is 'no' then I keep going!

Sounds like you might be better off doing the same for now, do little and often to avoid stiffening up and maybe build up to long walks when your knee stops hurting?
