Should I do a half marathon or not, help me decide!

I used to love running and have run numerous halfs in the past. But I’ve had a long time off (young kids and health reasons) and the last few months is the first time I’ve run for years, and I’m finally finding the joy in it again.

At the moment I’m not running much more than 5km at a time. II’ve signed up for a 10km in April to give me something to aim for, and that was supposed to be enough for me this year.

But I have seen a lovely looking trail half marathon in mid June that I really want to do. But Is it too much too soon?

In the “against” column - I’ve had sore knees since I started running again, something that never bothered me in the past. I don’t want to injure myself. This run will be around next year. I should mix up my exercise more now I’m in my mid 40s and find some non-running goals.

In the pro column. It’s a very beginner friendly event and I could walk it if I wanted to. I just want to do it!!

The sensible part of me is saying it’s too much too soon after my enforced inactive years. But the impulsive part of me keeps checking back at the event webpage…

Do it! If this is something that is exciting you, grab it with both hands!

And go to see a physio about your knees. There may be muscle weaknesses that are causing the knee issues, and the sooner you can start doing something about that, the better.

I would do it! As you say, you can walk some if you need to. Maybe you need to start strength training if your knees are hurting - but definitely speak to a physio to make sure there’s nothing causing it!

If it has generous cut offs and you can mix running and walking just do it! Walk the uphills, try and run the down and flat bits. Trail races feel much more like speedy hiking than a road race

Okay you’re talking me into it 😂

I’ve booked an appointment with a sports physio to get my knees checked and if there’s nothing serious I’ll get it booked!
