Do people use exercise videos in the gym?

I like doing weights workouts at home - I use a variety of Caroline Girvan, Fitness Blender & Joe Wicks. I want to use heavier weights now I’ve been doing it for a while, so thought I’d join a gym. But keen to keep using the videos as like being told what to do when. If I propped up my phone to follow one is that a thing people do in gyms? I’ve never been a member of one before & not sure of the etiquette!

Yep. No one (and I mean this kindly) cares what others are doing at the gym.

Go forth!

I do.. I guess it depends on the gym how comfortable you are doing it. Mine has a weights area with some mats then a stretching area with some more so neither are really made for HIIT style workouts but I just use a stretching one and bring weights over.

I agree that people simply wouldn’t notice, but you’d need to check the gym had decent WiFi / phone signal.

Cherryana · 09/02/2024 23:08

I do this.

Yes I do Caroline girvan on my phone in the gym weights area

Sounds odd to me personally, but I couldn't care less if I saw you doing that in the gym. My only concerns would be these:

  1. Are you getting in other people's way in the process
  2. Is this way you're doing it safe, or liable to cause you or someone else an injury

If you want to do it and it's not going to cause problems like that, you really shouldn't give a shit what anyone else thinks 🤷‍♂️ You might inspire other people to try doing the same?

Thanks everyone. I know I shouldn’t care what other people think but will already feel like a fish out of water being in a completely new environment so don’t want to add to that!
Occurs to me too that on some of the videos (particularly Joe Wicks) they say what exercise is next so I wouldn’t even need to see the screen.
Have booked a gym induction 😁

I'm still getting used to gyms myself, and getting over a feeling of not belonging. It just means it's a new habit, which requires extra mental processing and thought as I learn about my new environment 😀

I think we're liable to overthink these things as adults. As a kid we'd probably just wonder in, ask questions and get on with it

makeanddo · 11/02/2024 14:12

I've also done this (with headphones obvs)!

EndlesslyDistracted · 11/02/2024 14:14

Yes, free weights and also yoga/stretching. Anything where you are not jumping around really. Often when the gym is quieter so there is more space and you can follow the whole routine without having people queueing up for a free bit of space or bench.

Hopefully the Wifi is decent. I had a gym membership for a while so I could try out the treadmills using the Peleton app. Their wifi was dodgy at times and the videos would freeze quite a lot which was a pain. I used my 5g and data but the videos used a huge amount of data - about 1.5gb I think. On YouTube you can watch at a standard resolution which uses less, not sure if you could on Peleton.

As others have said just take any weights you need and set yourself up on a mat somewhere and follow along on your phone or ipad with headphones on. At my gym we were also able to use the studio if there were no classes on.

Disasterclass · 11/02/2024 21:18

I've seen lots of people doing videos in the gym. It's a cheapy gym with no WiFi so I always wonder if people are using up a lot of data or there are ones you can download

Soccermumamir · 12/02/2024 16:39

Yeah there's a lady at my gym who uses fitness videos on her phone. She goes to the back and pulls an exercise mat out so she's not in the way of the machines.

afaloren · 14/02/2024 13:38

I do this for weights. I wouldn’t be able to think of what to do otherwise!

icedpuddles · 14/02/2024 21:41

I do this. Joined a gym in January as I wanted more weights and more cardio variety from my home work outs. I have not seen anyone else do it but people bring in little white boards and things with their routine on. I have as much right to be there and do a routine as anyone else.
