Which size dumbbells?

My local Home Bargains has dumbbells in and I was thinking of picking some up (😁). They have 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 kg (so on the heavier side if I'm correct?). I can barely pick up the 10 kg so that seems a bad idea. How about the other sizes? Is 7.5 a bit much too or would I use them in the end?

Hm. 7.5kg still seems pretty heavy. Are they a set? If so I’d be inclined to not get them and just get 3kg and 5kg on their own (if they seem a good weight for you).

eg https://amzn.to/3NZlvQc

depends how much the Home bargains ones cost though.

After 3 months I’ve just started using 8kg dumbbells for some exercises at the gym, but I’m still using 3kg for others.

I’ve seen people on here recommending adjustable dumbbells for home use, if I were you I’d start a thread asking for recommendations on those.

That depends on how strong you are now and what you want to do with them.

I'm not an expert but whenever I do exercises with weights I need different sizes. There's some arm exercises I'd find 2.5 kg plenty and others where 7.5 would work. Many women would use 10kgs or higher for the same thing.

Depends what you want them for.

I use 5kgs for lat raises
8kg for bicep curls
12kg for goblet squat
16kg for dead lift high pull or kettle bell swings
4kg for single leg squat....

Could you have an induction at a gym and see what you enjoy the most and go from there?

Thanks, I can say with certainty I won't be using 16kg for anything!

I did feel the 2.5s were a bit light and the 5s a bit heavy which fits in with what's been said.

I'm not too keen on adjustable for various reasons.

The Home Bargains ones were not especially cheap, perhaps surprisingly, just about the same price as online so perhaps I'll give it a miss this time.

It depends what you want then for. I use anything from 6kg - 20kg. Upper body will be lower than lower body. If you use them you'll soon progress, I was using 25kgs for squats a few months in. I'm now nearly a couple of years in and there's nothing I'd use a 2.5kg or 5kg for. This is why adjustable are good as they cover different parts of the body and have much more longevity as you get stronger.
