On demand dance classes for weight loss?

Susietea · 20/09/2023 06:04

I'm desperate to lose some weight. Need to exercise. Used to love Zumba but struggle to keep up the motivation to do youtube videos on a regular basis. (No good local classes that fit with schedule.)

Would love an on demand programme or something to fit into my life and improve accountability. Any suggestions?

Only limitation is that I can't do the very intense dances as I leak a little when I jump. 18 month LO also limits my time so 1 hour workouts are out!

Please help! Sick of looking so big and buying new big clothes.

Losing weight is driven by calorie deficit not exercise

I started doing this lady's videos in lockdown and really enjoyed them - no jumping so good if you have downstairs neighbours!! And very minimal equipment. She often suggests things you have at home if you don't have equipment eg. if you don't have a ball use a cushion, if you don't have weights use cans or water bottles. She's a single mum of 3 and started doing the videos to support herself from home and I really enjoy the workouts.

There are some free videos are here to get an idea of what she does: https://www.youtube.com/c/CoachKel/videos

But the real meat is in her on-demand studio: https://fitbycoachkel.com/ and you can filter for the really dance focused ones (https://fitbycoachkel.com/catalog/search?category_id=67702 and https://fitbycoachkel.com/catalog/search?category_id=94738 and https://fitbycoachkel.com/catalog/search?category_id=89659) but all the videos that are barre and body sculpt are still dance-related in some way.

That being said, you do have to combine these things with a calorie deficit to lose weight. What you eat determines if you lose and how much - exercise determines what you look like at the end! (And keeps you going through better mental health!)

Before you continue to YouTube

I just got some Davina McCall dance thing advertised at me on insta - a dance challenge lasting a month

Don't know if it's shit or not!

Also in lockdown we did loads of cosmic kids yoga together - your 18 mo might do it with you. Free on YouTube, 20mins ish each

While @Harrysmummy246 is right that eating less is themost important thing, I think OP you're right to be aiming to get more active and more fit and that will definitely help.

DD has a dance competition thing on her Switch which we do together. It always feels like a great work out! I keep wanting to do it when she's not here, but I keep forgetting to figure out how to plug the damn thing in (she uses it in her bedroom for other games).

Also, totally get the jumping concern but just FYI, when I occasionally have to take the kids trampolining and will be on the trampolines with them, I wear my period pants. V effective! Wink

You won't lose weight by just doing a not very hard dance class. It's calories, I"m afraid. You can't out-train a bad diet.

For example, a rowing machine at a pretty high level of exertion (for me) will cause me to expend around 550 calories if I row at that pace for an hour.

So if you can do that, do it it every day, go for it. But a nice Zumba class won't do that for you.

moveyourframe.com on demand videos are positive and great. Encouraging and uplifting. Company set up by two women who want exercise to be fun and not about weight loss.
I do find once you've started exercising (in your period pants for any leaks if necessary why not?), you are more motivated to start eating well. So though everyone always says you can't outrun a bad diet, the fact of doing any exercise spurs you on to eat a bit better. But if you do these dance classes you will feel a lot better about yourself anyway.
You can do it OP. Enjoy the dancing!
