Exercising whilst housebound and a wheelchair user

I'm really unfit, I'd like to get fitter and tone - I'm a wheelchair user and housebound. Where's a good place to start? (I've got some dumbbells somewhere).

Step 1. Find the dumb-bells.
Are your legs functional at all?

I have a hand cycle and a rowing machine with a static seat.

Have a look on YouTube...there are lots of chair based workouts and exercises on there

Thanks all. It's a neurological problem (I have muscle spasm), so I can move my arms and legs but not in a very controlled manner.

I agree with looking on YouTube. There is everything on there. During covid our local ageing well programme put up a whole load of exercise for older people videos and a subset of that was chair based exercises.

And with regards to you moving your arms but not in a controlled manner - who cares, noone will see. Not that it's appropriate to you but I follow yoga for bigger bodies and she is so reassuring about just do what you can and something is better than nothing.

resistance bands could be good, a very small bit of kit and allow you to press against them slowly, also no risk of injury if you drop them

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/06/2023 19:08

There are pads of seated exercise programmes on YouTube. Don’t worry about doing them perfectly, any extra movement will do you good. If you can do them in the fresh air too even better!

The videos here at Wheelpower may be the same as the ones on YouTube but there are also live classes and you can request free resistance bands to be sent to you.
