David Lloyd

I have a visit booked to explore David Lloyd membership this weekend. I need a healthier lifestyle and the child clubs/family sports aspects appeal. That’s the only thing that’s going to make a gym membership sustainable for me.

But they won’t go into cost with me yet - does anyone here have membership or experience? Is it likely to be crazy expensive? It’s just for me and my boy.

I'm a platinum peak time member and it's £149 a month. My club is one of the mid range ones in the south east, so I dread to think how much the premium ones are.

QuintanaRoo · 02/04/2024 17:57

There was an article with the CEO last week saying basically they’re going to keep raising prices as their customers say they want even more luxury and even better facilities. So more spas coming and price rises to fund it.

makes me laugh, I’d settle for non leaking ceilings, clean changing rooms, going back to pre covid opening hours and a better timetable but they can’t even get that right.

MeetMyCat · 02/04/2024 18:06

@QuintanaRoo interesting that you mention pre-COVID opening hours. I’m sure that our club used to close at 9pm on Sundays, but it’s definitely 8pm now, which is a shame, I regularly enjoyed a Sunday evening swim/steam.

Same here. And closes at 10pm in the week when it used to be 11.

@TheChosenTwo i suspect you do have mixed sex changing rooms - their policy is if a male member feels the women’s changing rooms better suit his gender identity then he is free to use them. You won’t know until it happens at your gym.

Ah okay. Even so, not something I care about personally so probably wouldn’t notice anyway, I always use a cubicle for changing.

Bananabredd · 02/04/2024 19:22

I wouldn't go anywhere near David Lloyd. https://democracythree.org/help-emma-sue-david-lloyd This is not a one off by any means. In Kingston Upon Thames there's a man who changes in the women's changing rooms (from his MALE clothes) and in to a bralet. He sits around the swimming pool...watching. David Lloyd allow this to happen. Lots of women leaving. If there's a Ballantyne gym near you that's the safest one to go to. DB won't allow perverted men in to women's spaces.

Help Emma sue David Lloyd

Please help me raise money to pursue legal proceedings against David Lloyd Leisure for discrimination and breach of contract.

We pay £400 a month - London with amazing spa - 2 adults, 2 kids...super expensive but we go sat and sun morning and kids go to classes for 2 hours each day. Kids classes are ok at ours and kids happy to go. Joined late last year and I haven't been this fit since I was at school...it's been live changing for our family so worth it for us. If I break it down, 32 hours childcare included which we usually use (although it could be up to 64 over weekends for 2 kids), access to a spa that is better than any hotel spa I've been to (DH and I use twice a week) and DH and I are 'gyming' 3 times each a week.

Your children go to gym classes 2 hours each day. Really. That's obscene if true.

lilacsunbeam · 02/04/2024 19:48

I pay £160 for my platinum membership and £40 for my 3 year old DD at a David Lloyd club in the south east and we both love it. My DD attends the kids classes 3/4 times a week plus swimming once a week and I use the gym 4-5 times a week so we definitely get our moneys worth. I find my club to be clean and everything is in good working order, the food in the restaurant is healthy and varied. The only downside is how busy it is now and parking is a nightmare.

annieannietomjoe · 02/04/2024 20:38

@Bananabredd my kids were going to 2 hour long kids classes on a sat and Sunday morning - not gym classes - some sport/some arts and crafts. Although now they only do 2 classes each on a Saturday as we have other commitments on Sundays now.

There are a few different types of membership as well as tiers based on the club you join. At our DL we pay ~£140 for a family of four (2 parents, 2 kids). We have a peak time platinum membership. I loved it as a place to go for free kids activities when I was a single parent of two, and though it came with a small additional charge their crèche was great when they were pre-school age, it gave me much needed respite to work or exercise! Depending on what you're in to its a great spot for socializing, I found I quickly made friends with some regulars and there are always events happening.
For it to make sense financially to us I find I have to go 3 x a week to justify the price; I do a mix of classes, swims (we have an outdoor pool which I love), some family tennis and gym stuff.
If you google 'David lloyd membership prices' there should be some indication of what you might pay for your local club. I've been a member for the last 10 years so happy to answer any specific Qs you have

You pay £140 for a family of four?!?! How??? Here it’s £140 for one adult!

HermioneWeasley · 24/04/2023 20:15

Just be aware, if it matters to you, that DL have mixed sex changing rooms. If a male club member feels it matches his gender identity to use the women’s facilities, they allow it and won’t let you out of your contract if you weren’t expecting that

I’ve never come across this at DL.

Mummame2222 · 02/04/2024 20:42

wanttoplayboardgames · 24/04/2023 23:04

Does anyone know if their crèches are included in the membership price, or are an additional cost?

Additional.

Doesn't mean you are not going to. If a man says he feels like a woman they WILL let him in your changing room. Enjoy it being single sex while you can.

That is horrendous. I think I would leave. There are family changing rooms with private cubicles that are available to all genders so hopefully he’d go in there.

QuintanaRoo · 02/04/2024 22:23

Not every DL has a family changing rooms. Ours doesn’t and there’s a man who comes in the women’s changing rooms.

Timeforachocolate · 02/04/2024 22:28

Over £300 for a family here, platinum with rackets

Are you really this naive? The reason for men going in to women's changing rooms is for the thrill, for the affirmation. This is what their fetish does for them.

Google it. Marks and Spencers, John Lewis, Primark, Monsoon, etc etc etc. Men can just say are a woman and they will have access. This is where we are.

Women's rights are f4cked right now. Our poor daughters.

What is your problem love? Clearly I meant male & female. And I was saying I hope he would just use the unisex changing rooms instead of the ones clearly not designed for him. Stop looking for a fight where there’s not one you fool, I don’t want him in there any more then you do.

Eastie77Returns · 02/04/2024 23:23

There is a man who identifies as a woman at my local DL and uses the Female designated facilities. I was in the changing room a couple of weeks ago when he was there. Several women were clearly uncomfortable. This is a 6ft something man striding around the changing area in an ill-fitting wig and women’s gym clothes. It’s ridiculous really.

They’re obsessed with it @Mummame2222 - any opportunity to froth about it, oh they will.

On my local facebook re David Lloyd gyms. The initial poster was a man who had seen another man take a photo of a woman in the spa in her bikini. He didn't do anything about it! Then all this came out.

You’re actually only supposed to be allowed in there with a bracelet that has a chip to let you in. If you are a platinum member. I am a platinum member and you’ll NEVER get me in that spa because it’s full of creepy men. The last time I went in alone. I entered the large spa pool, it was empty and has many different areas you can go to for space. This guy entered and sat right next to me. The entire space was free. He could’ve gone to ANY other area. I left and have never been back.
It’s not monitored or controlled correctly at all. It’s disgusting and quite alarming. No wonder the majority of the time it’s a men only domain.

Did you mention it to the woman who’s picture was taken? Surely she had a right to know.

I went there afew weeks ago as a guest with my daughter on Mother’s Day… the spa really did have a few creepy men in it!!

Top contributorThe SPA is full of people on their phones. There is a sign up but nobody takes any notice, I have stopped going on an evening as I am not comfortable.

l Was looking for a spa. Will not be joining this! Thanks for the heads up.

This happened to my daughter in Raynes Park. The male manager was very supportive but my daughter couldn't identify the man. However some of the female staff on reception were a bit like 'are you sure? How can you prove it? Why would any one want to?' Which I thought was outrageous.

It's ridiculous for what you get. I feel these are more status than fitness. DP goes to the local virgin gym (but it's one of the fancier ones) and I believe it would be £90 a month without his benefits package at work. I go to the local pure gym and I have better equipment but no swimming pool or sauna. I pay £9.99

Wow! Our pure gym is £17.99 a month for the basic.

It has gone up now. A whopping £11.99. Is £17.99 off peak? I’m not sure if I’m stuck in a special offer that keeps me cheap - I definitely joined on a special offer. I looked at changing my primary gym and it rose to £18.99 so I think I’m just lucky.
