Hi,
I'm planning to start half marathon training in n Jan 1st. Aiming definitely for an event on May 13 but plan designed around a race on 22/4. Just in case.

Anyone want to join me?
I've done several halfs before but not run a good one for a few years.
I'm using the Garmin beginner 3x a week programme.

Anyone want to join me?

I'll join! Training for one in March but have never been a runner in my life. Also starting on the 1st!

JessicaBrassica · 27/12/2022 06:34

Fab Guinness! I spent years (nearly 40 of them) being not a runner. What prompted you to do the half?

I’m going to start training for one on 1st Jan. It’s in March. I’ve done a couple over the last year but not run for a few months so I think it’s going to take a bit of an effort to get going.

milkfromthesleepycow · 27/12/2022 07:40

I'd like to join. I've got two in may (gulp). Have built up to 25 miles a week since summer, planning to get to 30 by mid feb then start a 'proper' training plan mid March.

chutneypig · 27/12/2022 07:52

I'm training for one in early April. I started my plan last week, a bit earlier than I'd usually do but I've been quite slack recently and need the extra base stage. I got Matt Fitzgerald's 80/20 book a few years ago and dusted it off, low heart rate zones sound right up my street now.

TheMindfulMum · 27/12/2022 07:54

I'm here too 🙋🏼‍♀️ Would love some guided support through training. Total beginner here!

Velvian · 27/12/2022 08:05

Me too please I have one in March😱.

I did a 10K in the summer. Started running properly at just turned 41. I've never been sporty and I am not a natural runner at all.

I find 3 x a week too often for leg/foot niggles and injuries, so am going to try to do it on 2 runs per week, as I run better that way giving my legs time to reviver.

chutneypig · 27/12/2022 13:15

@Velvian I'm with you on keeping the runs down. I know I'll be ok on 3 a week, 4 is pushing it and I'm better spending the extra time cross-training. I'm aiming for yoga/Bodybalance for flexibility and pilates for strength.

When is your half @TheMindfulMum?

What have people got planned for next week? I was supposed to do 5 miles today but have a slight sniffle so might do my intervals session tomorrow and the longer run Friday?

July! 😬😬😬 and I have a 5k in May to warm me up 😂 Nothing like pushing myself!

chutneypig · 27/12/2022 16:07

Are you running at all now @TheMindfulMum or looking to build up? Plenty of time yet, it'll be fun!

JessicaBrassica · 27/12/2022 16:18

Ooh other people! This is exciting!
I ran walked 6k or so with a friend today. We went through the woods and it was very muddy! Hoping to do similar on Thursday too.we always run Saturday mornings, generally trail/ hill runs although last week we park ran.

My friend and I have also entered a nyd 5k trail run on Sunday which will count as our first training run of the year.
Our plan is 3 runs a week plus 3-4 sessions of yoga/pilates/cross training so there will be some swimming and biking in there too - TRI training plan starts at the end of April after the half!

I love planning the ok ngs - I'm not always so good on the follow through!

marathon runner here- currently bed ridden, but cheering you all on from the sidelines. Hoping to start running again in a few months

boingboingboingboing · 27/12/2022 16:25

I did my first ever half last March and it was by far the most enjoyable exercise event I've ever done. Really amazing buzz and the crowd support was fantastic.
I'm planning on doing that event again in 2023, and maybe 2 other half's.... with a slight eye on London marathon 2024.

Sadly due to heat wave and then injury my running habit has declined somewhat so I definitely need to get back into it.
I'll start with you all on 1st jan!

JessicaBrassica · 27/12/2022 16:30

@TheMindfulMum are you following a plan? Or just winging it?

I did a bit of couch to 5k last year but stopped at about week 6 - purely because a heat wave arrived and then I lost my flow. I'm feeling pretty motivated to get into a good routine starting next week 🤞🏼

I think I'll need to follow a plan. Initially it will be just general exercise to get me into a routine and then I'll follow a set plan I think to get me ready for when I need to be.
If anyone can recommend any apps that offer good (and free!) training plans I'd love to hear of them.

Try the Nike Run Club app. There are plenty of training plans and workouts there.

What it doesn't tell you however is the specific intensity you should run at, as it would be different for everyone. So work out what your easy, 5K, 10K, mile pace is first before you attempt the speed intervals.

If you own a Garmin, then select one of the training plans there and your watch will tell you to do everything.

Turefu · 27/12/2022 23:08

I’d like to join, please! I’ve done 5K run … four years ago. I need get back to basis. I’d love to loose some weight too.

LimeSupper · 27/12/2022 23:16

Can I join please? I run on average once a week at the moment, sometimes twice. I do exercise most days, I just change it up a lot and swim/ cycle. I did run a short 8k today but I usually do 12-15k. I’d really like to do a half marathon at some point but it feels a loooong way away at this point. Would love to know what others are doing and hopefully we can cheer each other on!! My plan is to stick to two runs / week for the whole of January and then go from there.

twotoedsloth · 27/12/2022 23:28

Following. I have a half marathon at the beginning of March so technically already started training. It's actually quite nice doing it over Christmas as it balances out the over indulging a bit!

chutneypig · 28/12/2022 08:17

I found a basic C25K app did well to get me to the 5k point @TheMindfulMum. I used Get Running but it was a while ago. I'd definitely recommend parkrun when you're there, great atmosphere and gets you used to running with others and pacing yourself.

I love the planning too@JessicaBrassica - got a notebook and everything.

Fantastic to have so many people joining the thread. I need all the motivational support I can get.

I agree @twotoedsloth but the weather isn't on my side at the moment. I've definitely not reached the stage I want to plough on with a wet run regardless.

Velvian · 28/12/2022 09:06

The thing I found you have to watch out for for couch to 5K, is that it doesn't actually get you to 5k, it gets you running for 30 minutes. That is really hard in itself, but 30 minutes is only about 4K for me.

Make sure that you measure distance too.

JessicaBrassica · 31/12/2022 11:46

How is everyone doing? I officially start tomorrow with 30 mins cross training and an optional pilates session.

I love a good plan... And I am dreadful at following them. So tomorrow I've booked a local 5k.
I've also just run 7k this morning. V muddy, quite wet and because I was so wet I stopped for a brief dip in the river. My Garmin tells me I need 47hrs recovery... That bodes well for tomorrow!
What's everyone else up to?

chutneypig · 31/12/2022 13:34

parkrun for me in the morning. Pilates too as I've not done as much this week as I should have. I did one interval session this week which went pretty well, so feeling on top of it at the moment. But not back at work yet! I'm feeling the effects of Christmas eating, I'll be glad to rein it in a bit.

JessicaBrassica · 31/12/2022 13:37

Well done @chutneypig . Completely agree with the food over Christmas. I'm wearing compression tights tomorrow. Today there are definitely bits of me that move (wobble) when they didn't previously. I'm doing veganuary because it's the only way I won't just hoover up all the remaining Christmas chocolate!
