Treadmill or Run outside

Which is best and why?

I like the treadmill if the weather is bad but it is so so so so mundane.

I prefer outdoors as there's stuff to look at.

<waves at all you runners from the rowing machine>

Dogsgottabone · 31/10/2022 12:05

Outside. Especially in the sheeting rain.

Treadmill broke today 😭😭😭😭 can't run outside as dc is only 4 so not quite at the age of independence while I head out 😂 so I can't vote for either today really.

My son likes the treadmill because he has control. He likes to be able to increase the incline, track his speed and distance etc. outside too many factors - having to stop at crossings, dodge people, uneven pavements, plus the tarmac is hard on joints.
Recently he has started running on a track outside as he can do that after the gym has closed, but thats the only advantage.

Unless your son only ever plans to race short distances on the track, this is really poor logic. You can get all the stats you need outdoors with a decent watch; plus it's far better training for race conditions where all of the above factors come into play.

There is a reason why pro runners train outside, even when they have the very best treadmills in the world available to them. Kipchoge, after breaking the 2hr marathon, famously said he'd been on a treadmill two times in his life, ever...

She didn't say he was planning on racing or being a pro runner did she? Maybe he is just running for fun and fitness? Not everything has to be a competition.

fellrunner85 · 31/10/2022 13:55

Perhaps so; but I assumed that someone so intent on tracking exact stats and speed - to the extent they don't like stopping at crossings or passing other people - was more than a fun runner!

Outside with some nice quality gym leggings for me :)

bigblueyonder · 02/11/2022 15:35

Outside. I get bored and fall off the back of treadmills which is embarrassing. But I do have lots of off road running routes and forests I can get lost in.

christmas2022 · 02/11/2022 19:59

Morning or night?

christmas2022 · 02/11/2022 19:59

Outside

MrsDooDaa · 02/11/2022 20:03

Outside always. Skin is waterproof.

Klank · 02/11/2022 20:07

Treadmill for me. It takes away the excuse of ‘not today, it’s too hot/too cold/too windy/too wet’. And I can watch Netflix.

MummyJ12 · 02/11/2022 20:50

Outside for sure. I get bored really quickly on the treadmill and as others have posted already, it’s too easy to get off!
If it’s bad weather I sometimes do opt for a Peteton treadmill class but if I have a choice it’s always to run outside.

Good point

Treadmill. I use mine every day, not to run..I can't run ha. But I do 10k on it everyday.

Haybo26 · 04/11/2022 14:11

I'm currently on mine whilst typing this. I usually watch netflix so it flies by the time. I've also lost 1 stone since getting it in Sept.
