Who is still going to the gym?

Eurydice84 · 21/10/2022 15:24

I exercised at home for a few years during COVID but I have recently joined a gym. Aside from the classes and equipment, I have a sit-down area for when I am working remotely, and I bring DD for swimming lessons, so it seems a good deal. I still exercise at home when I want but I am finding the variety good - the first group class nearly killed me!

Just wondering what the general trend is now? Are people back at the gym or doing Peloton/virtual classes? It seems busy here but not as much as it used to pre-pandemic.

I lost my gym membership March 2020 but tbh I always struggled to get in a decent session with work and kids, and I didn't enjoy showering there.

I've worked out at home since and although it's a hassle having to buy my own weights, I work out much more and can do it evenings/early mornings/whatever even when DH is out and shower in my own bathroom. If there was a decent gym like 2 mins away, I think I'd probably join, but in the absence of that home workouts have proved far more workable.

AuntieMarys · 21/10/2022 15:35

I am! 3 to 4 spins and 2 weights sessions a week

Dontsayyouloveme · 21/10/2022 15:40

Gym here. During lockdown I did HIIT and bought a cheap crosstrainer which I put in the garage. I now just go to the gym but should really pick up the HIIT stuff again at home on the days I don’t go. It was great for weight loss and toning up.

Parker231 · 21/10/2022 15:41

Two personal trainer sessions a week and two gym classes. Hate it if I have to miss training.

JamMakingWannaBe · 21/10/2022 15:51

Not exercising much during COVID really affected my fitness levels. I was straight back to the gym as soon as it reopened.

Social mixing rules at the time meant class sizes were restricted but those rules have been lifted.

Pre-COVID I used to double up with a Zumba then a Balance class or Pump then yoga but a LOT of classes are off the timetable now, and none run concurrently anymore.

I do try and hit the cardio and free weights in the gym but I'm not especially good at motivating myself so I need the structure of a class.

There are a lot of old faces but I think attendance levels are down from pre-COVID times.

I am back in the gym but it's a decent gym 2 minutes from my house so it's perfect! It's a chain so I can also use the one near my office. PT once a week as well.

MissyB1 · 21/10/2022 16:09

I go just to use the treadmill and swim. 20 minutes in treadmill and 20 minutes swim about 3 or 4 times a week. I love it as it’s my switch off time.

MintJulia · 21/10/2022 16:15

One solo 5k run a week, one Parkrun, one martial arts class and I speed walk to and from the office on a Thursday (about 2.5 miles).

I can't justify the cost of a gym.

Redcrayons · 21/10/2022 16:20

Yes but mine is a pay as you go but I optimistically purchased a ridiculous number of passes for classes months ago which will expire at the end of the year.
I enjoy it once I’ve been, but only do classes. I’d rather run outside then jump on the treadmill and I’d go too easy on weights if left to my own devices.

Season0fTheWitch · 21/10/2022 16:34

DD is 2 months old and I've just started back at the gym to tone up after pregnancy. During pregnancy I did workouts at home and at some point I'll go back to that but I like the social side of the gym too

SpiderBabies · 21/10/2022 16:37

Me! Zumba, Body Pump, Body Balance - most classes on waitlist. The gym seems emptier than pre-lockdown but classes are really popular (membership is £32/month, all inc, which might be a reason...)

fairtrauchled · 21/10/2022 16:39

I do 2 Pilates classes and a Zumba class each week.I also try and do a couple of hours in the gym using cardio and resistance equipment.I do the occasional aqua class too

InsertPunHere · 21/10/2022 16:39

4 classes a week a the council-run leisure centre, to try return to my pre-lockdown state.

I hate it, but it needs doing. And at least the council gym is very cheap.

dementedpixie · 21/10/2022 16:43

I go 6 days a week to classes. I do body pump, attack, combat, zumba, LBT and balance.

EerilyDevilled · 21/10/2022 16:46

Me, a mixture of classes and gym. I still do some yoga videos at home but on the whole I am over working out at home, a bit like working from home it was necessary in lockdown but very glad I no longer have to.

AriettyHomily · 21/10/2022 17:23

Not me, my gym cut classes and the new reduced timetable doesn't work for me. I'm doing it at home but it's not the same.

RayKray · 21/10/2022 17:39

I do but then I love it. Home couldn't have the equipment I need. And the shift to my happy place where I train is really motivating.

I didn't pre lockdown though. And the thought now of not being able to go during lockdown is horrendous! I'd be devastated and the impact on people's fitness must have been huge. I did try online type stuff during lockdown but it didn't motivate me.

PinkBuffalo · 21/10/2022 22:23

I live at the gym it is 100% my happy place!
was devastated when my old gym had to close in lockdown and never reopened but found a gym that is actually better for me after all
like a pp I find it impossible to work out at home by my own i definitely much happier working out with all my friends at gym

Are you me @Parker231 ?

im at the gym probably 5 days a week - PT sessions and classes. After 2 lockdowns I take live classes and sessions whenever possible.

Besides, I lift heavy, so I’d need a lot of kit if I stayed at home/online.

Stellaris22 · 23/10/2022 16:15

I go to the gym as that's where my PT is based, also attend a couple of spin classes and LBT.

Never exercised at home as I prefer having the extensive range of equipment, weights and machines at the gym. Plus I feel like 'gym space' means work rather than home.

Definitely busier in the evening so I go in the morning.

trilbydoll · 23/10/2022 16:21

I go to the gym to run on the treadmill. I won't run outside on my own now, I'm far too scared of rogue policemen / random men looking for someone to murder. Also West Wing is on All4, why run outside where it is cold and wet when I can watch TV at the same time?!

If I am on a mission I'll do a Jillian Michaels dvd at home as well, I am only interested in running and maybe the cross trainer in the gym.

Skala123 · 23/10/2022 16:23

My husband bought all the weights available in lockdown so we had a great set up in the garage and that's where I stayed day in day out for over a year. I then moved countries and gyms remained closed but I had no equipment so I used outdoor gyms and did banded workouts. The second gyms reopened I was there and haven't looked back. Go 5-6 days a week just to lift weights. No cardio or classes (they're in a different language so would be a bit tricky!!)

Changingplace · 23/10/2022 16:26

I’ve been to circuits today - I much prefer a class at the gym to trying to motivate myself to go for a run (especially when it’s as cold & miserable as it is here today!)

I do a mixture of spin, circuits, legs bums & tums, pump - I have to push myself to get there but I never regret going afterwards.

Parky04 · 23/10/2022 16:32

I run 5k a day on the treadmill and do weights. I love the gym and money well spent.
