Just done my 1st run , couch 5k .
I've not run since 2003 😬
Took the dog with me, she enjoyed herself.
Gave myself a pat on the back.
I'm 45 and so unfit

Any other running virgins want to join for moral support.

Well done. I'm not joining in for the running, just giving moral support, although I left my car parked close to my sons school today and walked the 50mins home (a bit hilly) and will be walking back shortly.
Then did some bum toning exercises during my lunch hour.

Well done to you. Have a rest day between.

aliceinshackles · 13/09/2022 15:14

Thank you.
Even though in total it was only 8 mins of running. I know about it.
I've also downloaded MyFitnessPal app.
I'm not really over weight for my height but thought it will help stop the naughty snacks
Attempting to stop smoking as well.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 13/09/2022 17:45

8 mins is not to be sniffed at! Especially after 8 years. I love MyFitness Pal too, its really handy for staying on top of stuff.
How often will you be running?
I'm with you in aiming to stay away from the snack cupboard too. My tummy isn't looking the best at the moment.

aliceinshackles · 13/09/2022 18:17

Well the app thing says 3 times a week. But I can only do 2 runs this week due to work.
No way am I doing this before or after a 13 hour shift!

Yes to the snack tummy. I've lost 4 stone but could so easily put that back on.
It's really to tone up and get my fitness levels sorted.
I work in healthcare , don't want to offend anyone, I look at patients past medical history and think that could be me if I don't do something now.

We can be snack buddies if you want 😂

Well done OP!

I'm in. I went on a walking weekend away with an old friend the weekend before last, and struggled to keep up with her. We're the same age and once had similar fitness levels, but it soon became obvious that we don't anymore! I could barely talk while we walking up some of the hilly bits, while she was still chatting away, and in the end we turned around sooner than planned because I just couldn't hack it. I ached so much afterwards, whereas she was fine, and am annoyed with myself for letting myself get like this. I also work in healthcare and don't want to carry on like this and have it affect my quality of life in years to come.

I sulked about being so unfit last week (and ached for most of it!), but decided on Monday that it's up to me to change things.

I've walked 5km every day so far this week, listening to an audiobook, and enjoyed the headspace. Planning on starting C25K on Monday.

aliceinshackles · 15/09/2022 07:58

It's run 2 today. Got some training on teams first then I'm off .

@WhatLikeItsHard I start week 2 on Monday so happy to run virtually with you!

OP posts:
aliceinshackles · 15/09/2022 14:06

Run 2 done. Feels worse than day 1

OP posts:
WhatLikeItsHard · 16/09/2022 00:19

Well done on run 2! @aliceinshackles

I've just got in from a 5km walk, very nearly didn't go as I flopped on the sofa after work and couldn't be bothered, but made myself go and do it.

Good luck for run 3!

blockpavingismynightmare · 16/09/2022 00:27

Well done !

I want to start but have to get myself motivated. I walk twice a day with my dogs and want to start running. The last time I did, I tripped up and fell hard and cried. It was my own fault as i jumped over a rock and caught my foot but it's put me off.. or is that an excuse.............. :)

fellrunner85 · 16/09/2022 08:17

or is that an excuse..

It's an excuse! I run c25k groups through my running club and the ones who get to the end running 5k are always the ones who are determined and have the right mindset - not the ones who are already fit/slim/look like runners/ whatever.

It's about perseverance, getting through the hard bit, and allowing it to get much easier. The ones who make excuses and say they can't do a run because they're tired/on their period/ have a headache/ have a blister/etc are the ones who never finish.
I've seen countless people who couldn't run for 30 secs at the start of c25k go on to run half and full marathons, fuelled on the mental strength to keep going.

aliceinshackles · 16/09/2022 17:13

That's my aim, well not quite a marathon but I would like to be able to do parkrun on news years day.

I done brisk walking today and run 3 tomorrow.
Also looking at learning how to swim properly.
But my shins , they really hurt but supposed muscles that haven't been used.
Climbing snowdon didn't hurt this much 😂

Babana123 · 18/09/2022 08:50

Can I join you all? I did couch to 5k 10 years ago successfully and lost loads of weight using my fitness pal. Unfortunately I got into bad habits and put the weight back on.
I started Slimpod at the beginning of Sept and that has motivated me to get running again. I download the C25K app and did my first run this morning. It was more difficult than 10 years ago (age is a cruel thing!) but I am determined to do it. Second run will be on Tuesday.
Well done everyone on the C25K journey. We can do it!

MintJulia · 18/09/2022 08:57

Well done. Good for you. I started running at 48 after doing nothing since school. I was so unfit, C25k was beyond me for the first 6 months.😀

Ten years later, I still run parkrun. It's definitely worth the effort.

WhatLikeItsHard · 18/09/2022 11:22

@blockpavingismynightmare Sounds painful! You must have a good level of fitness from walking your dogs twice a day though, maybe start C25K somewhere with no rocks?

@fellrunner85 one of my ex boyfriends was a marathon runner, and said that the toughest thing about running is "the top ten inches", as in your mind. I've just put it my diary that I'm going to do week 1 tomorrow, Wednesday and Saturday. Just need to stick to it now 😬.

@aliceinshackles well done on finishing week 1! Hope your shins are feeling better. I quite like the idea of running a parkrun on Christmas Eve, without feeling like I'll pass out. That's a goal for me!

@Babana123 welcome! Well done on doing the first run!

@MintJulia that's amazing, I'd really love for it to 'stick' this time and still be running in ten years. Though I know that that's up to me to stay committed and not give up. Any tips for keeping at it?!

WhatLikeItsHard · 18/09/2022 11:24

Need to make sure that this isn't me this week 🤣

Day 1
aliceinshackles · 19/09/2022 09:39

Morning all.
Life got in the way so run 3 had been delayed to today.

Yes to everyone joining in!
We can do this 💪🏻
The more the merrier I say!
@Babana123 well done for starting running again.
@MintJulia thank you for the encouragement!
@WhatLikeItsHard that's what my brain tries to do 😂

OP posts:
Babana123 · 20/09/2022 18:10

@aliceinshackes how did the 3rd run go?

Did my second this morning. It was okish, but my left knee is hurting. Might leave 2 days rest to be on the safe side.

aliceinshackles · 21/09/2022 20:30

It didn't happen.
I tested positive for covid instead. My little hat trick 🙃

OP posts:
Kidsfortea · 21/09/2022 20:33

I will. Got to week 7 then work kicked in and have to begin again x

aliceinshackles · 27/09/2022 17:21

Hopefully starting again next week as on annual leave. I've still got a nasty cough though so will pace myself.
As I only managed 2 runs of week 1. I'm starting again at the beginning.
Now ordered some proper running attire as well.

OP posts:
WhatLikeItsHard · 28/09/2022 21:31

Ah no @aliceinshackles, hope you're feeling better soon!

I still haven't actually started with C25K 😳, but I did join a gym this week and been twice so far.

aliceinshackles · 05/10/2022 16:18

Well I'm back to it. Done 2 runs this week. Jesus, between coughing my guts up and wanting to puke. To shin pains.
Run 3 on Friday.
I have purchased running gear so have to run now

OP posts:
WhatLikeItsHard · 07/10/2022 17:15

Well done @aliceinshackles, that's good going to get back to it after covid. Have you done run 3 yet?

I finally did week 1, run 1 yesterday morning, and have just done run 2 now. Was hard but glad I got through it. I'm listening to an audio book instead of music, which I think works better for me as it distracts my brain from feeling like my lungs are about to explode. My headphones fell out at one point and it was a bit surprising to hear how noisy my breathing was, like a rusty pair of bagpipes 😳🤣.

Will do run 3 on Sunday morning. Is anyone else still going or starting?

WhatLikeItsHard · 09/10/2022 19:42

Just finished run 3 of week 1. Still out of breath 🤣. Will next run on Tuesday.

aliceinshackles · 09/10/2022 20:06

Well done @WhatLikeItsHard !
I managed Fridays run , so week 1 done. Week 2 starts tomorrow.
Still coughing my guts up and shins hurt but think of the good it's doing I keep telling myself!
