Fell running zero drop shoe help!

I'm attempting to make the switch from road/trail running to fell running, but my current shoes aren't going to cut it for the winter. I'm currently running in a pair of Merrells which are zero drop and have a wide toes box, and I'm looking for something with the same sort of profile but with proper treads. I always wear barefoot style shoes and find I get back problems when I don't, and my running gait is crap in "normal" shoes.

Sooo...I'm a bit stuck - fell shoes seem to have big drops and/or be really narrow in the toe Can anyone recommend Altra lone peaks for fell running, or will I just skid about in them? The only others I've seen (online) are the Innov8 terraultras but they seem quite hard to get hold of. I know I should be trying some on, but I live a long way from a decent running shop and just haven't got time, plus I've got big feet and find shops never stock the women's in my size anyway. So online it is. Thanks very much for your help!

I would highly recommend the Terraultras if you can get hold of a pair. They're wider than most inov8s too - I find most of them come up very narrow.

Not lone peaks or terraultras for proper fell running!! Trial running you’ll be fine but I’ve done some pretty horrid technical descents in terraultras and would not care to repeat the experience.
Inov8 are wider than say Solomon or Walsh, I have roclites and Xtalons and I really like both.

This is an excellent point - the terraultras are fine on most gnarly trails, but not on proper fells. If I'm doing proper technical stuff I like my inov8s with the much bigger lugs (x talons). My Roclites are much like my terraultras, don't know if the most recent Roclites have more grip though.

Good to know, thanks both. All the other innov-8s seem to have quite a hefty drop though, as well as being narrow, which I'm worried is going to bugger my back up again. Maybe I've bought into the barefoot thing too much, but I'm definitely not a heel striker. Hmm I think I need to get to an expert running shop don't I.

My roclites are miles miles better than my terraultras for grip, I have the newest ones and they are fabulous on anything but wet rock (but what works on that!!!). Xtalons a step above that again, but I prefer the roclites comfort wise.

I have wide feet and inov8 are brill. Wide toe box.
