Couch to 5km newbies

MistySkiesAfterRain · 17/04/2022 20:16

I'm redoing the NHS Couch to 5km. Last did 5km in 2016 and most recently have got to Week 4 before losing interest! Not this time. I am going on holiday in 5 weeks and would love to get to week five by then.

Week 1 Run 1 (W1R1) done today. I ran really slowly but it did get easier.

Here is the link for anyone new:
www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/running-and-aerobic-exercises/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/

Recommend the app (my favourite is Jo Whiley).

Hi all! I have completed the first run of week 1, hooray.

@caffellatte i think I will have to do the same and start setting my alarm before the children wake up! My youngest is sleeping through so occasionally I am awake already but end up lying in bed looking at my phone instead!

Midnightstar76 · 23/04/2022 13:06

Hi I will join in as started my first run this morning. I have Reece Parkinson, previously have done this but unfortunately did not finish and had Joe Whiley. Have lost my running mojo but got out there and really enjoyed it. Have built up to half a marathon in the past but definitely no where near have the stamina so hope to stick with it and not give up as once I stop I stop.

Morning,
Got myself up and out this morning for second run week 1. Motivational voice was definitely saying no but did it any way. I went yesterday as well and I know you shouldn’t run twice on the bounce but find it very difficult to fit in so take the opportunity when I can and this weekend seems to have given me a bit of free time. Have found some cool down videos on you tube so going to mix it up and do one of them after each run.

DollyPartBaked · 24/04/2022 10:18

Well done @Midnightstar76 for going again. I also have RP on the app - I think he was the first person who popped up and I didn't have a strong preference!

Even though I found run 1 absolutely fine because so much is walking, my arms and legs are feeling it this morning which I am shocked about! But perhaps shouldn't be given my total lack of exercise over the last 5 years!

Midnightstar76 · 24/04/2022 10:38

Hi @DollyPartBaked yes it wasn’t easy but enjoy doing the cool down stretches after. The ones I have found seem to have a few yoga poses in them to really stretch out. I just need to do some stretches as a warm up next time too as missed that this morning.

DollyPartBaked · 25/04/2022 10:24

W1R2 completed!

Midnightstar76 · 25/04/2022 17:30

Well done 👏 @DollyPartBaked , I got myself out the door at 10 ish after a bit of a lazy morning (Day off Work). Was going to try and do 6.45 but was too busy sorting kids to squeeze it in and knackered. Have done Week 1 run 3 but definitely having a few days rest now and will crack on again on Thursday. Absolutely shattered after that run and will sleep tonight.

You've been going through W1 quickly @Midnightstar76 , well done! I would like to do some stretching, if I try to bend and touch my feet my hands don't go pass my knees. I would have to wake up a bit earlier to do that. How long do you stretch for? The video on the c25k app shows exercises for about 10 mins

Sorry for spamming the thread, there were some server's issues and I've unintentionally posted 3 times! How do I delete a post?

It’s a site wide problem at the moment. To get posts deleted you’ve got to report them to mnhq and ask but I wouldn’t worry. It’s not your fault!

If you’re wanting to get more flexible, yoga is brilliant. I like yoga with Adrienne on YouTube which has the bonus of being free. I do it on days between runs.

Hi! I've just finished week 5 this morning, so done my first 20 minutes non-stop run. Keep going through the early weeks, I feel better than I have in years!! Am really excited about running in the mornings now, and after 10+ years of hardly exercising I didn't think I'd be saying that again!!

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 26/04/2022 11:06

That's great @MonaChopsis !

I remember how good I felt when I got to the end of C25k last time...that's what's motivating me at the moment! That and knowing how close I got to my running goal last time. I had a Parkrun goal of 30 minutes and I managed 30:03 before falling pregnant and it all went down the pan 🙄DETERMINED to get that goal thsi time!

I did Week 2 Run 1 last night and it felt much easier than last week. I felt like I was running faster and I didn't hurt quite so much! Hurrah!

How's everyone else getting on?

LoudingVoice · 27/04/2022 14:35

I just did run one week one 😀

I got up to week 6 before, if I could just do 20 mins non stop again I’d be happy!

Well done everyone else!

JalapenoLover · 28/04/2022 14:03

Hello, I've just started last week. I'm on week 2 run 2 next. I do lots of exercise but I haven't run any distance since I was at school and I'm 43 now 😂. Lo9konf forward to being able to understand 5k!

JalapenoLover · 28/04/2022 14:04

Strange typos haha. Looking forward to being able to run 5k!

Tortoisetroubles · 28/04/2022 15:46

Can I join in? I started another thread about being scared to run outside and got so many helpful tips I've now done week 1 run 2 today of C25k. Can't quite believe it as I bought my trainers over a year ago and never made it out of the door. I'm feeling much better about running publicly now I've tried it and no-one looked twice at me. I've never run before and felt run 2 was worse than run 1 as my legs turned to wood and I got shin pain I couldn't seem to stop. It's like my shin muscle turned to stone. I think I'll try yoga with Adrienne too like a pp suggested I expect being more flexible would help.

That's fantastic! I do get a bit self-conscious too but try to zone out to it. I used to get shin splints previously when attempting to run. They're horrible. This time I also have achillies tendinopathy in one foot so I have been walking at least 10k a day since Jan and doing some rehab exercises from physio, in an attempt to give myself the best chance of not getting injured again. I probably need to think about getting some running shows fitted with gait analysis too as apparently the shoes you wear are very important in preventing pain and injuries. I think there's a shop near me called runners world that does it.

JalapenoLover · 28/04/2022 17:38

That's 10k steps not km 😂

BellyDancer124 · 29/04/2022 07:44

Hi All! Can I join? I completed run 2 week 2 last night. I'm really enjoying it Grin but my knees are starting to feel it Confused I have ordered new trainers that are more supportive so hopefully they help!

Hi BellyDancer! Well done. I'm doing that one today. Have started to quite look forward to running... will see how long it lasts :)

JalapenoLover · 29/04/2022 13:11

Just did my run. Was ok. Not sure how I'm going to cope when 90 secs becomes 8 mins! Like Reece though. He seems genuinely pleased for me 😂
