Fitbit calorie estimates

Has anyone else experienced having super low calories burned data on Fitbit?

I feel like it can't possibly be right!

You might think I'm in denial here, but the thing is if the Fitbit predictions are right (that I burn like 1300 calories a day) then I would be hugely over weight.

I'm actually 8 stone, small built, slim but not skinny. Weight fluctuates every now and then but hovers around the same mark.

I eat a balanced diet with plenty of treats. Usually over 2000 calories a day. I exercise little, with a short walk or swim a few times a week.

Where are they getting these numbers from?! Is there a way to make it more accurate at all?

Have you tried putting your details into a TDEE calculator?

Checking my stats in fitbit

Monday- 10161 steps, 1788 calories
Tuesday- 12080 steps, 1953 calories
Wednesday- 10073 steps, 3758 calories
Today (feeling unwell)- 1407 steps, 1424 calories

I don't understand either, according to Google its based on your weight n speed of walking etc.

Haha I know but my question is more like: if this is my true calorie burn, why aren't I overweight?

@bonfireheart is the 3758 a typo? 😮

You don't say how tall you are but if you're not doing any significant amount of exercise that's probably about right, maybe a bit on the low side but I'd expect your BMR to be less than 1300 calories a day at that weight.

No lol its what my fitbit says. Although this morning when I woke up it said I'd done 58 steps, who knows what I was doing in my sleep! Not sure how much I believe of anything it says.

I went for a 15minute jog this morning (I'm vastly overweight, it was major for me). Its registered 15 minutes of Cardio. But no exercise apparently...
Messing around on just dance for 10minures? It counts that as exercise. Or walking to the school and back.

Oh yeah, the exercise thing makes me laugh, I did some running on the spot whilst watching YouTube and it registered that as me being on an elliptical machine.

Yeah that doesn’t sound right to me. I’ve got Covid and moped around and mines saying I’ve burnt over 2000 calories yesterday so 1300 does sound really low, even if you are a lot smaller than me.

Are all your details correct in the app- height, weight etc? Sorry I don’t know what else to suggest.

@Hlglu56 yours sounds more wrong than the 1300 (unless you're particularly tall, heavy or a man). Put your stats into here to calculate BMR www.diabetes.co.uk/bmr-calculator.html

The 1300 sounds like your tdee. Functional day to day movement will burn quite a bit. Proper exercise will burn a bit more so would easily get you up to around 2000.

I've only just started using my fitbit so have no clue how it works out my calories but this is mine over the last 4 days. I really don't understand how I've burnt so many calories so far today when I've not even walked 2000 steps today.

Do you wear the Fitbit pretty much 24/7, OP?

Does Fitbit have your correct weight, age & sex?

When I tracked my calories, they pretty much perfectly matched my Fitbit estimate - my weight is stable.

51 kg age 32yo female doing 'light' exercise would need ~1700 kcal/day.

1781 kcal/day if age 25 & 55 kg.

@YeOldeTrout I do have all the correct data in there, and do wear it all the time. Strange! Maybe I'm the weird one with a weird body.

I'll triple check the details

I'm almost a stone heavier than OP and this gave me: 1370.04 Kcal/Day
BMR, but the fitbit is measuring actual calories burned and not BMR, isn't it?

@Gwenhwyfar it will be calories burned but if you've sat on your bum all day it will only be a couple of hundred or so more than that and even light exercise doesn't add much more.
