Front crawl swimming - Flip turn advice

I’ve been swimming a lot more (front crawl) lately and have been getting a bit faster. I now wonder whether I could shave more off my time by doing a flip turn, or whether it would slow me down if my flip turn is rubbish!

I’m not very fast (23-25min 1km) by the way, so perhaps I would look silly doing a flip turn at my (relatively) slow speed!

Any tips from experienced swimmers appreciated👍

Check out YouTube channels MySwimPro, Global Triathlon Network and Effortless Swimming, they have great tutorials.
I’m about to start learning to flip turn, I’ve opted for lessons though. I resisted for ages because thought it unnecessary but have realised how much my rhythm is broken by that continual slight pause of a touch turn.

My kids were all taught to do the flip turn at swimming school for breaststroke as part of normal swimming.

Back in my club swimming days, from time to time we used to practise just turns, rather than doing full lengths, so you get used to knowing when to start turning- too close, and you don't have the space to turn; too far and you are too far from the wall to kick off, and you can lose a lot more time that way. It's like anything else - the way to do it well is to keep practising.

You need to know what space you need compared with the lane marking on the floor, because your height and arm length will be different from the person next to you.
