Using Strava on Apple Watch (gps only) for running?

If you are…can I ask how you are getting on with it? I used to use strava on my phone and found it excellent. I bought the Apple Watch mainly because I thought it would save me carting my phone around with me…BUT….I’m not enjoying it :( i don’t know if I need to adjust the settings but it seems to very inaccurate (my usual 6k run is now nearer 6.5k) and the screensaver comes on so I can’t keep an eye on pace and time…plus when I look at it, it pauses and I lose a bit of distance while it decides to start back up. Plus it only gives me announcements for full kms but not half k splits like it did on my phone.

I tired the default Apple workout app and that was worse on the distance calibration!

I’ve tried tinkering with the settings, to no avail. Anyone got this figured out or should i just go back to carting my phone around? I feel like I’m being robbed of distance and speed and it’s a bit demotivating!

Thanks!

Sorry I mean that I have to run what I think is about 6.5k for it to read 6k…I am going way beyond my old stopping point.

The watch app pulls from your phone like all the apps on Apple Watch - so the GPS will never be as accurate, annoyingly.

So yes, track using your phone. I also set Strava on my watch and have learned what split pace is what I’m actually aiming for, but inaccurate (if that makes sense - so on the watch 8 mins 45 seconds splits per mile, on the iPhone app is approx 8 mins 20 seconds splits per mile). So I can still keep track of my pace using the watch, but it’s nowhere near as accurate. The app on the phone will always have you going further, and therefore faster.

Thanks for your response! I wish I’d done better research now before investing in the Apple Watch…the allure of a lightweight run with just a watch and wireless headphones had me excited but I now just get so annoyed with the splits being called in the wrong place..it’s not even consistently out for me which would let me mentally recalculate my pace…grrr! I’ve tried different apps too as I skeptically thought it might be Apple trying to sabotage a competitor and make their own more appealing…but that is worse! I’m back to my trusty phone and armband :( I didn’t realise how demoralising it would be!

I like my Apple Watch 😊 I’ve set it so the workout app links directly to Strava as I found that more accurate than having the Strava app on the watch iyswim.

I’m not a serious runner tho 😂😂 more of a plodder.

The Nike app is pretty good on the watch
