Cycling cleats

Just got my first pair of cycling shoes and fitted some SPD cleats to use in spin classes. But now I'm not sure if I've ordered the right ones. Should SPD cleats work with both or either of these types of pedal? It's all very confusing for a newbie!

Can you be a bit more specific about what you've bought juicylemon?
There are 2 sorts of SPD cleats - the 2 bolt type which for mountain bike shoes and the 3 bolt type for road shoes. Technically the 3 bolt version is cllled SPD -SL but they tend to all get lumped together. You need the right pedals for the cleats, they aren't interchangeable.
Also, therr are other brands of cleats that look very similar, such as Look, which will fit any 3 bolt shoe but only Look pedals.
Can you post pictures of your ckeats, shoes and pedals?

Sorry, cross post.
I'm not familiar with those particular pedals but they look like 2 bolt SOD mountain bike cleats should fit. Have you got pics of your shoes and cleats? I've just been rummaging round for my MTB shoes and of course I can't find them!

Oops. SPD, not SOD, though they can be little sods when you're learning!

Looks like you need cleats like this

Thanks both for your replies. Here are the Shimano shoes with the cleats attached.

The shoes are Shimano SPD IC5W. I bought and attached the Shimano SM-SH56 MTB SPD cleats with 2 bolts and the cleats are small, metal and tree-shaped. The more I look at them all the more confused I get!

I think those should be compatible. If I am looking at the right thing they are multi release cleats, meaning there's more than one way to dosengage them. I've never used those, only the basic type, but they shoukd certainly be compatible with your shoes and I cant see any reason why they wouldn't fit the pedals. Are you having trouble clipping in and out? Sometimes you need to adjust the spring tension on the pedal to make it looser and thus easier.

Thanks all, it's sounds like I've bought the right cleats then. When I tried them earlier today on the pedals in the first pic (a Stages bike) I couldn't work out how to clip in and wondered if I'd just bought the wrong ones. I will have to try again with more patience!

I haven't tried clipping into the second pedals (Matrix) yet. I took pics of both pedals last week and then tried to read up about cleats before I ordered!
