Glute exercise, doing too many make it smaller instead of grow?

Please could anyone advise?
If I do 3/4 workouts a day could this make my bum smaller? Someone has told me it could. I thought the more you work the muscles the bigger it will get?!

My understanding is you need rest days to allow muscle to grow

What kind of workouts? Cardio workouts alone will tend to shrink your bum, weight training will grow it. But as the above poster says, you need rest days to let the muscles repair and grow.

WhiskeryWoman · 28/04/2021 10:29

If you are new to exercise 3 or 4 a week would be overdoing it, as for 3 or 4 sessions a day!! Just yikes. Hello injury. Hello pain and not good pain.

I go through phases of my glutes getting too tight during certain training phases due to the extreme stress they get put under. Part and parcel of being a cyclist!! But I deal with it through visiting an Ostepath to loosen me off and following a daily prescribed stretching programme.

When they are bad they cause agonising pain in my coccyx. Just exercising your glutes, especially that much will not to the rest of your body any favours. It certainly won’t shrink the muscles either?!

Sounds like you are best off getting booked in with a decent personal trainer. They can assess your fitness, discuss your goals and prescribe training accordingly that’ll help you work toward your goals.

Thanks for all your replies.
I have been doing floor exercises for glutes and feel the burn every time but no burn after 20 minutes so felt I was fine to keep doing them?!
Looks like I need a rest day. I really want to grow and lift my bum and after over a week of a lot of exercises don’t see much difference 🙄

You won’t see any difference after just one week. You need to be doing any exercise for weeks or even months for a noticeable change - I read 4 weeks to notice yourself, 8 weeks for family close friends to notice and about 12 weeks for other to see. Building muscle is a long hard process and you need to be practicing good technique, increasing weights as you get stronger and also eating properly - you’ll find it hard to build muscle if you are in a calorie deficit.

Spodge · 30/04/2021 18:10

As the PP has said, building muscle takes ages and is hard work, requiring progressive overload and enough protein.

Suggest you Google Bret Contreras who specialises in glute building exercises and see what plans he offers. Floor exercises alone are unlikely to do very much at all to grow them.

Are you the poster whose husband basically told you he didn't find your bum attractive, and only found big bums attractive, and then cried to you about how he knew he was shallow but he just couldn't help himself?

The resounding responses on that other thread were that your bum isn't the issue, your partner is!

Stop working your poor glutes 4 times a day - it's not doing them any favours. The only arse that needs dealing with here is your partner.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 30/04/2021 19:27

I’ve just read your other bum thread, OP, & I came to say you’ve already living with a massive arse. But it looks like sar302’s beaten me to it.

Workinghardeveryday · 30/04/2021 20:27

Thanks for your responses.
Look I know what you think and you’re entitled to your opinion and yes I agree he is a total arse for saying it to me. He has back tracked and feels awful, says he doesn’t want me to change.
Thing is I am now left feeling extremely inadequate and crap about myself and I need to do this for me and my own confidence now if that makes sense.
But I do understand your comments

In general, I think things like heavy weighted squats, exercises with bands, and throwing in a bit of Pilates can all help. Don't do excessive amounts of cardio. That can all help build and tone muscle.

But I'd only be doing "legs / bum" (don't forget to do legs too - they support your bum after all) maybe 3 times a week or so, with rest days inbetween. The muscles need to do their whole tear and repair thing.

It's also worth noting though that some people just don't build big behinds 🤷‍♀️ we all have bits we prefer and bits we'd like to improve. I'd swap you my bum for your flat stomach in a heart beat!

It seems like you have a number of threads on this guy. I don't know you, but I can almost certainly tell you that you deserve better. Exercising definitely helps people feel better about themselves. But it's not a magic wand if you're facing daily criticism and negativity.

Workinghardeveryday · 01/05/2021 12:00

@sar302
Thank you for your post and your tips! I will do legs too, i try not too much as I am prone to building thigh muscles really quickly and I don’t like it.
I could tell a difference this morning so hopefully it’s starting to work 😁.
I was thinking the other day how I have posted things about him and how much he has upset me about so many things, has really made me think about things and I won’t forget this feeling, the fact I have posted it’s a wake up call for me.
Thank you again for being so kind 😁x

That’s great to hear! And you’ve got the power of MN behind you.

If I do 3/4 workouts a day

Please don't. It's not good for you. If you're doing proper work outs that is.

donhella · 25/06/2021 20:23

I'd suggest you aim for 3 times a week. You want to allot time to exercising other parts of your body too. Some workouts you could try healthmakesyou.com/effective-routine-workout-at-home/

You REALLY need some proper advice @Workinghardeveryday because what you say here is so I’ll-advised I almost have no words.

If you are being influenced by social media types you need to know that it is rubbish - it’s all poses and mirrors.

What do you want strong glutes for? To lift more, to have a more efficient body?

Just as you can’t spot reduce, it’s difficult to spot bulk muscle. If you want to get fit and muscular you should be doing a balanced and sensible programme, working out hard and heavy around 3 or 4 times a week. But not just your glutes. You should be doing a mix of weights (proper stuff) and cardio, and you likely need to eat a lot more protein, plus think about whether you need to be in calorie deficit or actually - eat more calories in a balanced healthy diet.

The best all body exercises that actually build functional healthy glutes are squats - weighted or body weight. If you really want to build strong g muscle, you need to do a proper programme of weighted barbell lifting.

And it’ll take months, not one week!!
