After sea swimming regularly since May I’m hoping to carry on. Is anyone else hoping to carry on open water or sea swimming through the winter? If you fancy supporting each other and sharing hints n tips come join me. I’ve just bought some socks and neoprene hat, I’m hoping to to stay in my cossie as long as possible but I do have a wet suit if I cave. Smile

I was just looking at tomorrow's forecast, SSwim! I'm planning a dip tomorrow too now that the storm force winds seem to have passed and it's safer 🤞

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 15/03/2021 17:13

Itching for the local lake to open up. It's a PITA to be trapped in the West Midlands. Any other wannabe West Midlands sea swimmers? For wild swimming there is the Avon near Stratford on Avon but other places are limited.

I did get in for a cold but calm swim last night nice to see a few ladies out before sunset. There was a cold northern wind though. Hope to nip down today after work if the sun comes out as forecast, the wind still hasn’t dropped but sea swell has luckily.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 16/03/2021 18:52

I had a short swim. It was absolutely freezing although apparently 7.5 degrees which is warmer than earlier in the month. I forgot my gloves which did make a huge difference, my hands were so cold they hurt almost immediately. I've got soft Grin

SSwimCycle21 · 16/03/2021 20:58

Glad you got a dip, I went back again tonight and it felt warmer than yesterday as wind had dropped off into a beautiful eve sunset. But even with 5mm gloves on my hands ten minutes after I’d got out were really cold so yours must have been painful 🥶 well done

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 17/03/2021 12:29

I had my gloves this morning and the difference even 2mm makes is incredible! The beach was packed (public holiday for St Patrick's day) so I didn't stay long but there was a lovely buzz around and lots of people chatting and enjoying the normality of it all. Can't believe it's a year since we went into lockdown, or how much this novelty of sea swimming has kept me sane.

Hope you enjoy the day mother, I was lucky to get beautiful sunset swim tonight it was a stunning evening as the wind dropped and sea went mill pond. Quite a few out enjoying the tranquility tonight.

Wondermule · 17/03/2021 21:11

Can I join in anticipation of a move to the seaside in a few months?! 👋🏻

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 18/03/2021 12:38

Hello Wondermule Smile. Will you be moving far? I'm lucky that I'm only a few km from the sea, it's been my saviour this year.

SSwimCycle21 · 18/03/2021 19:42

Good luck with your move wondermule

Another lovely swim tonight

I’ve been really lucky this week and swam 6 out of 7 days, tbh I kicked myself for not going last night as the grey clouds suddenly parted at sunset to a lovely evening. The sea state has been really calm. Alas I’d promised to do something with the kids instead.

Ringsender2 · 21/03/2021 12:27

This was my Paddy's Day swim. Cycled down and had a lovely dip. It's warming up a bit, but this particular baylet can be quite variable. Felt colder yesterday. Loads of kids starting to come back and swim, so is only going to get busier. Glad to be cycling there - completes the package!

Was Seapoint packed on Paddy's Day, Ringsender? It's so busy on a normal day I presume it was heaving. (We must be neighbours 🙂)

I was in Killiney earlyish this morning, the water felt much colder than earlier in the week even though it was 8c rather than 7.5 of the last few days.

Ringsender2 · 21/03/2021 16:44

@Barmbraic it wasn't too bad, but definitely getting busier than Feb. Yesterday was busier. I try to find a less crowded spot, but it is a bit like a seabird colony. I've never swum from Kiliney beach. Vico is the closest, which is just gorgeous. Can't wait for the 5km to lift to go back there.

Wondermule · 21/03/2021 16:45

@MotherForkinShirtBalls

Hello Wondermule Smile. Will you be moving far? I'm lucky that I'm only a few km from the sea, it's been my saviour this year.
Not too far but will be much closer to the sea - a 5 minute or so walk. I’ve always liked the idea of sea swimming but I hope I’ll actually be able to hack the cold! Do you wear a wetsuit?
Barmbraic · 21/03/2021 18:57

I'm technically outside my 5k for killiney beach car park but not when I'm in the water Grin. I like it because it's so open, very little seaweed (I can't bear Sandycove) and it doesn't matter if it's high or low tide. I don't think I've ever been to Vico, I must check it out some time.

I have managed without a wetsuit, Wondermule but I do need gloves and bootees. I have plenty of natural insulation though.

SSwimCycle21 · 21/03/2021 19:22

Nipped down for a pre- dinner swim tonight after I’d popped the roast spuds in Smile was millpond smooth calm evening so I couldn’t resist. Nearly at 60 swims 1stNov-March really surpassed my original goal of once a week Grin

SSwimCycle21 · 22/03/2021 13:37

Morning coffee swim with friend today, we’ve been so blessed with calm seas recently and sunny but cold weather.

Ringsender2 · 22/03/2021 17:02

@SSwimCycle21 - lucky you!
@Barmbraic - love that your swim spot is in the 5k. I will have to try it once the 5k limit relaxes. There's White Rock right next to the beach, and Vico just a tiny bit north. (Seaweed at low tide though!)

Barmbraic · 23/03/2021 17:21

Very short swim today. I wasn't in the mood but I went anyway. It was very cold and choppy, almost like a storm brewing, but it was glorious about an hour later Hmm

Barmbraic · 23/03/2021 17:22

Ha, I've just realised I name changed a few posts back, I'm otherwise known as Mother 🤦‍♀️

SSwimCycle21 · 23/03/2021 19:13

You did better than me barmbriac I went down and sat & watched the waves for half an hour at the same time but the kite surfers were out which took as a sign too windy and didn’t get in today.

Barmbraic · 26/03/2021 16:15

Sitting by the sea sound fantastic too, Swim

It was glorious this morning so I had a gorgeous dip. It snowed an hour later Confused

SSwimCycle21 · 28/03/2021 07:12

It was freezing cold wind yesterday but no snow just abit of hail. I had a quick dip I was really glad that for once I’d bought the car instead of cycled and parked close enough that I ran back to get changed in the car. I ran after and it took me 3k before my feet stopped feeling numb with cold 🤣

Barmbraic · 28/03/2021 18:07

I wasn't brave enough to go yesterday, Swim after the snow and hail the day before. I went today. The water was 8c but the air was 17c! The wind was very high though so a huge swell. I didn't stay in long (too rough to actually swim) but it was lovely to come out and be warm. Smile
